Mr. John Thomas "Tom" Sheehane, 79 of Ozark, died Sunday afternoon, March 28, 2004, at his home following a lengthy illness.
The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 30, 2004, in Holman Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Tommy West officiating. Interment will follow in Woodlawn Memory Gardens, with Holman Funeral Home of Ozark directing. Flowers may be omitted or memorial contributions may be made to Wiregrass Hospice, 1970 East Andrews Avenue, Ozark, Alabama 36360, or Chalkhead Baptist Church, 495 County Road 35, Ozark, Alabama 36360. The family will receive friends at Holman Funeral Home in Ozark from 6 until 8 p.m. Monday evening.
Mr. Sheehane was born March 29, 1924, in the Ewell Community of Dale County. He worked at Fort Rucker for 33 years with various maintenance contractors in Quality Control, retiring in 1987. Mr. Sheehane was a member of Chalkhead Baptist Church were he served as a deacon Sunday School teacher, and served on various committees.
Mr. Sheehane was preceded in death by his parents, Martin and Anna Mae Powers Sheehane, sisters, Mary Belle Sheehane Keller, Mamie Frances Sheehane, brother, Lawrence Sheehane, brothers and sisters-in-law, Cornelius and Sallie Mathison, Ed and Joyce Mathison, Pauline and Jim Ramey, Reverend Ovie Mathison, Reverend Robert L. Vaughn, and David Mathison.
Mr. Sheehane is survived by his wife of 55 years, Annie Belle Mathison Sheehane, Ozark, brother, Luther Sheehane, brother-in-law, Floyd Keller, sisters-in-law, Verna Vaughn, Rachel Mathison, and Jacque Mathison. Many beloved nieces and nephews also survive.
Active pallbearers will be deacons of Chalkhead Baptist Church. Members of the Skipperville Domino Club will serve as honorary pallbearers.
CW4 Retired Samuel Robert Payne Sr., 85 of Ozark, Alabama, died Sunday evening, March 28, 2004 at Flowers Hospital, Dothan Alabama, after an extended period of declining health.
The funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday from Camp Ground Baptist Church with Rev. Harry Circle and Rev. Wallace Dukes officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery with Fuqua-Bankston Funeral Home of Ozark directing. Masonic and military rites will be conducted at graveside. Flowers will be accepted or memorial contributions are requested to be given to Camp Ground Baptist Church, 3898 East Andrews Avenue, Ozark Alabama 36360. Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Tuesday and the family will receive friends, during these hours.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Irene Sims Payne, and his youngest son, Joseph R. Payne. Sam was the last surviving child of J.R. "Jody Payne and Ellen Arrington Payne," having been predeceased by sisters, Ninnie Jenkins, Mamie Norris, Clyde Johnston, Lettie Searcy, Jessie Simmons, Jewell Carter and Ina Hayes, and one brother, J. Ross Payne.
He was a 1938 graduate of Dale County High School. He was also a veteran of World War II serving in the European Theater from 1943 to 1946. In 1950, he returned to the Army when the local National Guard unit was called to active duty, and served in the Korean Conflict. He remained on active duty and retired in 1969. After retirement he worked for E&W Lumber Company in Headland for a number of years.
Sam was a member of Claybank Lodge #908, F. & A.M., The Scottish Rite, a 32 degree Mason a member of the York Rite Bodies of Edinbaugh Scotland, to include the Knight Templer, and The Shrine. He and his wife were members of The Order of Eastern Star Kolb Chapter 468 in Ozark. His wife Irene was also a member of the Ladies Oriental Shrine of North America, Zulekia Court #35.
He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law Sam and Cindy Payne; and granddaughter Ellyn Payne, of Rossville, Georgia, several nieces and nephews and close friends Ralph and Rubye Medley.
Mary Carol "Giggie" Gurski, 40 of Ariton, died Saturday, March 28, 2004, at her home.

Mrs. Gurski was preceded in death by her father, William Gurski and her grandparents.
Survivors include two sons, Clifton Lang Marsh and William Brooks Marsh of Ariton; mother, Carole Pettite Gurski of the Roeton Community; brother and sister-in-law, Jerry Wesley and Lynn Gurski of Montgomery; grandmother, Laura Gurski of New Jersey; uncle and aunt, Jim and Joan Gurski of New Jersey; and several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Roberta Baty, 70 and a resident of Ozark, died Saturday March 27, 2004, at her residence.

Mr. Namon Crittenden, a resident of Ozark, died Thursday March 25, 2004, at the Dale Medical Center in Ozark.

Mr. Walter Jones, a resident of Ozark, Ala., passed away at his residence Monday, March 22, 2004.
Walter Jones Sr. "Special," one simple word that sums the essence of Walter Jones Sr. Special was his birth, being born Feb. 29, 1928, a leap year, to the late Mattie and William Jones in Dallas County, Ala., the fifth of 10 children. The unique fact of having a birthday every four years kept Walter forever young and young at heart. He loved life, people, and living. As a youth, Walter learned to love and serve the Lord as a member of El Bethel Baptist Church in Selma.
Walter joined the Navy in 1946 and served during the Korean War. After serving in the military, Walter graduated from R.B. Hudson High School and attended Selma University. While at Selma University, Walter met the late Johnnie Mae bell. Realizing that God had sent him a special woman, Walter married Johnnie Mae on Jan. 31, 1955. God blessed the union with six children, Gloria Jones (Keith Walker) of Tuskegee, Ala., Walter (Tonderleria) Jones of Montgomery, Ala., Lyvetta Renee (Pierre) Dyck of Ozark, Ala., Wanda Faye (Timothy) Flowers of Enterprise, Ala., Jennifer Jones (Bruce) Ray of Montgomery, Ala., and Joseph Kelvin (Wanda) Jones of Ozark, Ala.
In 1962, the family moved to Ozark. Later, the family united with the First Missionary Baptist Church. Walter served wherever needed. He worked as a member of the Usher Board, Laymen, Sunday school class #3, the Deacon Board, and enjoyed assisting in the kitchen so that he could be the first one to taste the food. Walter was past president of the New Era #2 District Sunday School and BTU Congress, and was very active in the Southeast District Laymen. In the community, he was a member of Euclid Lodge #68 of Free and Accepted Masons and the Disabled American Veteran Association.
After his retirement from the U.S. Civil Service, Walter continued his service to mankind. He took meals to the sick and shut-in, ran errands, and drove seniors to their doctor's appointments. Walter never met a stranger. These acts of love and selflessness demonstrated the exceptional man Walter truly was.
The faithful servant and soldier answered the Lord's call on Monday, March 22, 2004. His wife, Johnnie Mae; four brothers, Abe (Ed), William, Clarence, and Calvin; a sister, Louise Eaton; two sisters-in-law, Lula Fuller and Edna Jones; a brother-in-law, Harry Curtis; and a son, Glenn Robbins, preceded Walter in death.
Left to cherish Walter's legacy of love and giving are his six children; three sisters, Malisa Curtis, Ethylene Nettles, Helen Darden; one brother, Massey (Carrie) Jones, all of Selma, Ala.; two brothers-in-law, Golden Eaton of Selma and Lee Edward Bell of Detroit; four sisters-in-law, Juanita Jones of Selma, Mary Rosie McReynolds of Birmingham, Ala., Marion Keith of Detroit, Catherine Jones of San Diego; 18 grandchildren, Andrew Flowers, Pierre Dyck, Sharonda Dyck, Walter Jones III, Richard Dyck, Ashley Flowers, Artez Jones, Byron Dyck, Jasmine Jones, Joseph Jones Jr., Michelle Jones, Michael Jones, Alexis Flowers, David Jones, Malisa Ray, Kimberly Coleman, Nicole Robbins Angela Robbins; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Joseph Donald (Don) Johnson, 71 of Tybee Island died Saturday, March 20, 2004, at Hospice House after a short illness.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday March 24 2004, in the Chapel of the Hubert C. Baker Funeral Home - Hodgson Memorial Chapel. Interment will follow in Forest Lawn Memory Gardens. He was born in Ozark, Ala., and was the son of the late Lena Mae Davis Johnson and the late Henry Grady Johnson. He was a graduate of Dothan High School. Don was preceded in death by his brother Maurice. Don was a graduate of Auburn University where he was vice president of the student body, captain of the band, president of Sigma Nu Fraternity and a member of Spades. Don was a veteran, having served in the Korean Conflict and serving as a special agent with the Counter
Intelligence Corps. A certified management consultant, Don founded his own company, Johnson Management Services, and was a founding member of The Context Group. Previously, Don was vice president of Kurt Salmon Associates.
Don was a member of Thunderbolt Lodge #693, F.&A'M's, the Scottish Rite Consistory - Valley of Savannah, where he served on the board of directors. Don had just recently been inducted into the Cross of St. Andrews of the Scottish Rite Consistory and was a member of Alee Shrine Temple and the Tybee Lite Shrine Club.
He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Elaine; a daughter, Mary who resides in The Netherlands; two sons and daughters-in-law, Jim and Jean Johnson of Atlanta, and Scott and Julia Johnson of Dallas, Texas; two granddaughters, Emily and Caroline Johnson of Atlanta; three brothers and sisters-in-law, John and Leola Newton of Statesboro, Bobby and Kay Newton of Portal, and Gene and Barbara Newton of Atlanta; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Payne was a native of Dale County and raised in Midland City Ala. She graduated from Newton High School and Vanderbilt University, where she received her degree in nursing. She retired following 20 years of nursing. She was a member of Ozark Baptist Church, active with the homebound. She enjoyed gardening, sewing, working with pottery, and family activities especially her grandchildren. She was a member of the Eastern Star.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Mary Alice Marshall Woodham and Jasper Woodham; her husband of 48 years, Jesse Payne; one sister, Edna Miller; and five brothers, Jasper R. Woodham Joseph E. Woodham, Richard Thomas Woodham, Roy Tallmedge Woodham, and Billy Charles Woodham.
Survivors include her daughter, W. Sherrye Morgan, Olympia, Wash.; two sons, Jimmy Charles "Jim" Payne and his wife, Daisy, Anchorage, Alaska, Larry J. Payne, Echo; two sisters, Betty Jones, Brookhaven, Miss. and Ruth Jackson, Dothan; six grandchildren, Michelle R. Johnson, Jennifer E. Just, Mark D. Morgan, Steven Payne, David Payne, and Jennifer Elizabeth "Libby" Payne; five great-grandchildren, Austin Davis, Anthoxly Just, Jacob Just, Maiyah Morgan, and Kaiser Morgan.

Gladys Baldwin, 93 of Ozark, Ala., passed away Thursday, March 11, 2004 at Westside Terrace in Dothan.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. today March 13, 2004 at Fuqua-Bankston Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Ed Peters officiating. Interment will follow at Bethel United Methodist Church Cemetery. Mrs. Baldwin was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin Baldwin; two sisters, Ruth Baldwin and Leona Smith; and one brother Louie Snell.
Survivors include daughter, Mary Helen McLean of Huntsville, Ala.; son, Gene Baldwin of Ozark, Ala.; sister, Grace Deal of Dothan; brother, Randolph Snell of Palmetto, Fla.; four grandchildren, Gina & Patrick Adams, Amelia O'Neal, Matt & Lori Barefield, and Angie Barefield; three great-grandchildren, Coleman Adams, Sam Gillis and Pam Gillis; and Angie Garner her good friend and caretaker.
Mrs. Millie Renea Munn Mills, 46 of Ozark, died Thursday, March 11, 2004 at her home.

Mrs. Mills was a native and life-long resident of Dale County where she was a homemaker and a member of Ozark First Assembly of God Church. She attended Good Tidings Assembly of God Church in Clopton, Ala. In 1976 Mrs. Mills graduated from Carroll High School.
She was preceded in death by maternal grandparents, Manuel and Mable Rogers, and paternal grandmother, Louise Bludsworth Munn.
Survivors include her husband, Lamar Mills, Ozark; two sons, Shawn Crooks and his wife, Shannon, and Shane Crooks, Ozark; two step-daughters, Amanda Mills, Clio, and Rhonda Andrews, Newton; two step-sons, Paul Mills, Charleston, S.C., and Ray Mills, Dallas, Texas; her parents, Robert T. and Mae Opal Rogers Munn, Ozark; her paternal grandfather, T. R. Munn, Sr., Ozark; one sister Donna Lynn Sexton and her husband, Tim, Dothan; two brothers, Robert E. Munn, Sr. and his wife, Vicki, Dothan, and Keith Munn and his wife, Paula, Ozark; grandchildren, Caraline Hughins, Meg Andrews, Tyler Mills, Ally Mills, Cara Mills, Kinzie Mills, Landry Mills, and Blake Cooper; numerous aunts; uncles; nieces; nephews; cousins; and friends.
(RET.) Col. Henry E. Higham, 91 and formerly of Ozark, passed away Thursday March 11, 2004 in Panama City Fla. following a brief illness.
Graveside services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday March 13, 2004 at Woodlawn Memory Gardens in Ozark, Ala. The family will receive friends from 12 until 1:30 p.m. at the chapel of Fuqua-Bankston Funeral Home prior to graveside service.
Mr. Higham was born Jan. 14, 1913 in Trenton, N.J. He was a graduate of The University of Alabama and went on to serve as an infantry company commander in World War II and participated in the D-Day Invasion of Normandy. After the war, he was an educator at Ozark High School. While serving in the Alabama National Guard he was called to active duty during the Korean Conflict. Returning to Ozark, Col. Higham was instrumental in starting the Alabama Aviation College as well as Woodlawn Memory Gardens.
After retiring from Civil Service at Fort Rucker, Col. Higham resided in Panama City, Fla.with his wife, Sarah Henson Higham, who passed away in 1985.
He is survived by two daughters, Sally Higham Davis of Crestview, Fla., Nancy Higham Hudson of Panama City, Fla.; one son, Henry Jonathon Higham of Dothan, Ala.; four grandchildren, Mark Higham Davis of Crestview, Fla., Michael Eugene Davis of Oviedo, Fla., Jonathan Birke Higham of Ozark, Ala. & Katherine Elizabeth Higham of Ozark, Ala.; one great-grandson, Michael Stephen Davis who resides with his parents in Crestview, Fla.
Mary McKee Lomaneck, 84 and a resident of 214 Mark Ave., Ozark, died Wednesday morning March 10, 2004 at her home.

Mrs. Ruby Pearl Williams, 97 and a resident of Oakview Manor Nursing Home in Ozark, passed away Sunday March 7, 2004.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 9, 2004 at the chapel of Fuqua-Bankston Funeral Home in Ozark. Burial will follow in Ebenezor Baptist Church Cemetery in Ariton with Fuqua-Bankston Funeral Home directing. The family will receive friends at the funeral home tonight from 6 to 8.
Mrs. Williams was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur Williams; her sister, Myrtle Foote; brothers Sam and Wyatt Hayes and a nephew, Eddie Foote.
Survivors include three nephews, Murray Foote and his wife, Mary Ann, of Newton, Wayne Foote and his wife, Maria, of Opelika and Derwood Foote and his wife, Maria, of Brownsville Texas; Howard Foote of Hartford, Conn. and niece Monica Foote, wife of the late Eddie Foote, of Ozark.
