Glenn E. Kilgore
FORT PAYNE - Glenn E. Kilgore, who battled lawsuits and public outcry to develop the GEK regional landfill in north Alabama, was found dead Wednesday morning in Chattanooga, Tenn. He was 57.
The cause of death was not immediately determined, but Chattanooga police said they found no evidence of foul play. Police said medical examiners would perform an autopsy to determine the cause of death, which occurred at a Chattanooga residence.
Kilgore, a businessman in Rainsville, bought 321 acres in DeKalb County in 1991 near Lebanon. The next year, residents of the community located just south of Fort Payne formed the Lebanon chapter of Citizens for a Better Environment and hired an environmental lawyer to fight opening of the landfill.
Protest marches and demonstrations also were held.
But in 1997, after a civil court ruling went in his favor and a federal criminal complaint against him was dropped, Kilgore received a state permit to receive garbage from five northeast Alabama communities and to open GEK. He was granted a permit in March of 1998 to expand the landfills service area to include more than two dozen counties in Alabama, Tennessee and Georgia.
