DOUGLAS - Mozell Copeland, 84, of Douglas died Friday in an Albertville nursing home. The funeral will be Monday at 2 p.m. at New Height Baptist Church.
Burial will be in Douglas Cemetery with Adams Funeral Home of Albertville in charge.
Survivors include three daughters, Peggy Crawford and Brenda Crow, both of Albertville, and Sandra Hill of Douglas; three sisters, Polly Westbrooks of Atlanta and Irene Smith and Lorene Pettus, both of Orlando; and 11 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Marlin W. Head
BOAZ - Marlin W. Head, 76, of 745 Double Bridges Road died Friday in a Birmingham hospital. The funeral will be today at 2 p.m. at Mt. Zion Baptist Church.
Burial will be in the adjoining cemetery with Albertville Memorial Chapel Funeral Home in charge.
Survivors include his wife, Elouise Head; two daughters, Martha Todd of Boaz and Kay Power of Guntersville; two sisters, Maudell Springfield of Boaz and Gaynell Giddens of Guntersville; one brother, Donald Head of Boaz; and three grandchildren.
James M. Jackson
EUTAW - James Murphy Jackson, 77, died Friday at a Tuscaloosa hospital. A graveside service will be held today at 2 p.m. at Mesopotamia Cemetery with Kidd-Robbins Funeral Home in charge.
Survivors include two daughters, Judy Stephens of New Hope and Jane Brown of McCalla.
Lillie M. Maupin
MADISON - Mrs. Lillie Mae Maupin, 90, died Friday at a Huntsville hospital. No funeral services are planned.
Burial will be in Timberville, Va., with Madison Chapel in charge.
Mrs. Maupin was a member of the Madison Church of Christ.
Survivors include one sister, Mildred Parker of La Mesa, Calif.
John H. Mergaugey
John Henry Mergaugey, 71, of Huntsville died Friday at a local hospital. No funeral services are planned.
Burial will be in Valhalla Memory Gardens with Valhalla Funeral Home in charge.
Aldena C. Nelson
ATHENS - Mrs. Aldena C. Nelson, 82, died Saturday at a Huntsville hospital. The funeral will be Tuesday at 10 a.m. at McConnell Memorial Chapel with Dr. Steven Screws and Dr. Andy Wolfe officiating.
Burial will be in Athens City Cemetery with McConnell Funeral Home in charge.
Mrs. Nelson was a lifelong resident of Athens and member of the First United Methodist Church. She was past president of United Methodist Women, charter member of the Wesleyan Service Guild, served as president of the Fleur de Lis and the Athens Garden Club. Mrs. Nelson was also social editor and columnist for the Courier Democrat in Athens for several years.
Survivors include her husband, W.R. Nelson; one son, Russell Nelson of Athens; one daughter, Bethany Reid of Farihope; and four grandchildren.
Visitation will be Monday from 6 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church or a favorite charity.
Loyd E. Rogers
ATHENS - Loyd Estel Rogers, 68, died Saturday at a local hospital. The funeral will be Monday at 2 p.m. at McConnell Memorial Chapel with Donald Clem and Dewey Craft officiating.
Burial will be in Roselawn Cemetery with McConnell Funeral Home in charge.
Mr. Rogers was a lifelong resident of Athens and was retired general manager of Hardees on South Jefferson Street after 27 years of service. He was a member of Faith Tabernacle Pentecostal Church in Elkmont and was working at LeAnn Florist in Athens.
Survivors include his wife Addie Rogers; two daughters, Melinda Patterson of Athens and Jennifer Cain of Cheyenne, Wyo.; five sisters, Lois Jackson of Columbia, Tenn., Maggie Whorton of Owens Cross Roads, Edna Philpot of Toledo, Ohio, and Ella Ruth Campbell and Lois Ann Stanford, both of Athens; three brothers, Robert M. Rogers of Toledo, Ohio, Doyce Ray Rogers of Ardmore and Harlen Pebbles of Elkmont; and two grandchildren.
Visitation will be today from 6 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

MADISON - Effie Lee Turner Brazell, 69, died Thursday at her home. The funeral was Sunday at 2 p.m. at St. Elizabeth Cumberland Presbyterian Church with the Rev. John T. Holden officiating.
Burial was in Royal Cemetery with Nelms Memorial Funeral Home in charge.
Survivors include two daughters, Mary Louise Rice and Cassandra Denise Peebles, both of Madison; one stepson, James Ross of Decatur; two sisters, Danella Edwards and Mary K. Turner, both of Columbus, Ohio; one brother, Alphonza McCray of Huntsville; and seven grandchildren.
Louise M. Burdett
Louise Maples Burdett, 76, of Huntsville died Saturday at a local hospital. The funeral was to be today at 2 p.m. at Laughlin Service Funeral Home chapel with Bro. Johnny "Mack" Young officiating.
Burial will be in Maple Hill Cemetery.
Survivors include one daughter, Betty J. Brewer of Grant; one sister, Faye Henderson of Scottsboro; and two grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Linnie M. Campbell
FAYETTEVILLE, Tenn. - Linnie M. Campbell, 60, of 267 Ardmore Highway died Saturday at a local hospital. The funeral was to be today at 1 p.m. at Higgins Funeral Home with the Rev. Richard Hughes and Pastor Shane Warren officiating.
Burial was to be in Riverview Cemetery.
Mrs. Campbell was a native of Collingwood, Tenn., a gold and diamond specialist and a member of the Assembly of God.
Survivors include three daughters, Cherri Dyer of Boonshill, and Crystal Durham and Kimberly Hogin, both of Murfreesboro; one sister, Emma Sefglitz of Merrillville; and two grandchildren.
Herbert Cartwright Sr.
Herbert Cartwright Sr., 86, of 102 Redcliffe Drive in Huntsville died Friday at a local hospital. The funeral will be Tuesday at 1 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Decatur with the Rev. Jerry Crutcher officiating.
Burial will be in Meadowlawn Garden of Peace with Royal Funeral Home in charge.
Mr. Cartwright was a World War II veteran.
Survivors include his wife, Della Cartwright of Huntsville; four daughters, Juanita Bradley, Maxine Jones and Wanda Moore, all of Huntsville, and Cornelia Anderson of Flint, Mich.; and one son, the Rev. Herbert Cartwright Jr. of Huntsville.
Visitation will be today from 5 to 6 p.m. at the funeral home.
His body will be at the church one hour before the funeral.

OWENS CROSS ROADS - Mary Ruth Craig, 89, of 425 Honea Lane died Saturday. The funeral will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at New Hope Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Dewayne Martin officiating.
Burial will be in Byrd Cemetery.
Survivors include one daughter, Mary Joe Bryant of Avon Park, Fla.; two sons, Gerald Cobb of Orlando, Fla., and James Cobb of Huntsville; one sister, Bea Honea of Owens Cross Roads; and eight grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
Carol A. Cuff
Carol Ann Cuff, 34, of Huntsville died Saturday at a local hospital. The graveside service will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Maple Hill Cemetery.
Laughlin Service Funeral Home is in charge of burial.
Survivors include three special friends, Henry Hardin, Randy Mefford and Marietta Wright, all of Huntsville.
Visitation will be today from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

FAYETTEVILLE, Tenn. - Horace Fanning, 69, of Hilltop Road died Sunday at his home. Gallant Funeral Home will announce funeral arrangements.

FAYETTEVILLE, Tenn. - Herdalene Rose Feltman, 91, of Tate Road died today at a Fayetteville nursing home. Gallant Funeral home will announce funeral arrangements.
Allen C. Frederick
SCOTTSBORO - Allen C. Frederick, 38, died Saturday at his home. The funeral was to be today at 2 p.m. at Scottsboro Funeral Home with the Rev. Eugene McDowell officiating.
Burial was to be in Cedar Hill Cemetery in Scottsboro.
Survivors include one son, Michael Allen Frederick of Riverside, Calif.; his mother, Linda Frederick of Scottsboro; his father and stepmother, Kenneth and Patricia Frederick of Decatur; two brothers, Kenneth R. Frederick Jr. of Huntsville and Lloyd David Frederick of Scottsboro; and one stepsister, Brandy Andazola of Decatur.
Jack R. Jones
FAYETTEVILLE, Tenn. - Jack R. Jones, 73, died Sunday at a Fayetteville hospital. The funeral will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Kirkland Cemetery with Elder Don Burkhalter officiating.
Higgins Funeral Home is in charge of burial.
Mr. Jones was a retired mechanic with the Moore County Highway Department. He was a Korean War Army veteran and a member of Arbor Primitive Baptist Church.
Survivors include one son, Darrell Widner of Chattanooga, Tenn.; one daughter, Diana Peterson of Fayetteville; and six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be today from 6 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
Howard McNelley
Elder Howard McNelley, 78, of Huntsville died Sunday in Florence. The funeral will be Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Spry Funeral Home chapel with Elders Coy Brothers and Randy Dillon officiating.
Burial will be in Charity Cemetery.
Mr. McNelley was a native of Murfreesboro, Tenn., but spent most his life in Madison County. He was a World War II veteran and was minister at Briar Fork Primitive Baptist Church several years.
Survivors include his wife, Beatrice McNelley of Huntsville; two daughters, Nokomis E. Vaughn of Douglasville, Ga., and Freida N. Bass of New Market; one son, Nelton Howard McNelley of Huntsville; two brothers, John McNelley of Scottsboro and Jesse Hoyt McNelley of Wisconsin; two sisters, Mady Carter of Mount Juliet, Tenn., and Mary Elizabeth Collins of Oak Ridge, Tenn.; and eight grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be Tuesday from 5 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
Alice C. Stephens
STEVENSON - Alice C. Stephens, 86, died Sunday at a local hospital. The funeral will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Rudder Funeral Home in Stevenson with Thomas Shoemake and Roger Comstock officiating.
Burial will be in Stevenson City Cemetery.
Mrs. Stephens was preceded in death by her husband, Charlie Stephens.
Survivors include two daughters, Hady Sartin of Stevenson and Nona Patterson of Kellyton; four sons, J.C. Stephens of Flint, Mich., Carl Stephens of Bryant, Glen Stephens of South Pittsburg, Tenn., and Lynn Stephens of Stevenson; four sisters, Jennie Pittman and Leo Matthews, both of Nashville, Tenn., Mildred Ingram of Stevenson and Hazel Blanton of Spring City, Tenn.; and 15 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Jesse Venable
SCOTTSBORO - Jesse Venable, 69, died Sunday at his home. The funeral will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Scottsboro Funeral Home with the Revs. Jerry Glenn, R.L. Tyler and Joey Franklin officiating.
Burial will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery.
Mr. Venable was retired from Mead Containerboard in Stevenson after 18 years. He was a member of the Faith Covenant Church of God. He was preceded in death by one son, Henry Wayne Baxter.
Survivors include his wife, Mable Kay Venable; one daughter, Judy Patterson of Scottsboro; one son, Tommy Venable of Scottsboro; three sisters, Ernie Roberts of Rainsville, Nannie B. Gross of Scottsboro and Helen Swancey of Albertville; and eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Visitation was to be today until 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
Tammy L. Vess
DECATUR - Tammy Lynette Vess, 29, died Sunday in Decatur. The funeral will be Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. at New Hope Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Larry Meeks officiating.
Burial will be in Moon Cemetery in Owens Cross Roads.
Survivors include her mother, Jackie Dudley of New Hope; one son, Jeffery Vess of New Hope; her stepfather, Willie Dudley Jr. of New Hope; two sisters, Cari Glasco of Decatur and Chastity Miller of New Hope; her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. George DiGiorgio of Birmingham, Will and Judy Dudley of Owens Cross Roads, Jack Goodpastor of Huntsville and Larry and Jacki Hall of New Hope.

Charles Kochakian
BIRMINGHAM - Charles Kochakian, a retired University of Alabama at Birmingham professor who invented anabolic steroids, died at a Birmingham hospital. He was 90.
A native of Haverhill, Mass., Kochakian died Friday. He was a student at the University of Rochester School of Medicine when he discovered how to manipulate hormones - specifically the male hormone testosterone - to build muscle mass.
Steroids, once studied to speed recovery time for wounded soldiers during World War II, created a multimillion dollar controversy and fueled a debate that continues today.
Kochakian went on to become an endocrinology professor at UAB. His research history eventually landed him a consulting job with the World Wrestling Federation.
"I guess that was the mark he made," said Kochakians son, Charles P. Kochakian. "The appreciation of how basic science affects everything we do.
