Wayne Chastain
MEMPHIS - Wayne Chastain, one of the defense lawyers who tried to free convicted murderer James Earl Ray from prison, has died of cancer at 69.
Over the past several years, Chastain assisted defense lawyer William Pepper of London in efforts to win a trial for Ray, who pleaded guilty in 1969 to murdering Dr. Martin Luther King in Memphis in 1968.
Ray died last year in prison.
Chastain, a native of Paris, Texas, was a reporter for The Memphis Press-Scimitar, a former newspaper, when King was felled by a rifle slug at The Lorraine Motel.
Chastain died Monday at a Memphis hospital.
He was one of The Press-Scimitars reporters assigned to cover the assassination, and it continued to hold his interest after he left journalism to become a lawyer.
"He was a very nice guy," said assistant prosecutor John Campbell, Chastains opponent in the Ray case. "Ill miss him."
In trying to take back his guilty plea and go to trial, Ray argued he was duped into taking the blame for Kings murder by an underworld figure he knew only as "Raoul." Authorities say they have never found any proof of Raouls existence and remain convinced of Rays guilt.
