PENSACOLA, Fla. - Millard F. Bates, 69, died Friday, April 17, at a Pensacola hospital. A memorial service will be held Monday at 2 p.m. at Faith Chapel Funeral Home in Pensacola.
Mr. Bates, a former long-time resident of Huntsville, was a technical writer for the Department of Defense at Redstone Arsenal. He was a World War II veteran and served 24 years in the military.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Scroczyk Bates; two daughters, Suzanne Bates Birdsong of Athens and Rosemarie Bates Brygidyr of Huntsville; two sons, Mitchell T. Bates of Pine Bluff, Ark., and Mark J. Bates of Panama City, Fla.; and one grandson and five granddaughters.
Robert A. Bell
RAINSVILLE - Robert Artis Bell, 76, died Thursday at a Fort Payne hospital. The funeral will be today at 4 p.m. at the Rainsville Funeral Home with the Rev. Randy Hampton and the Rev. John Keefe officiating.
Survivors include his wife, Virginia Bell; one son, Robert Garry Bell of Rainsville; one sister, Bernice Wise of Rainsville; and one brother, Jack D. Bell of Rainsville.
James R. Brown
ELKMONT - James R. ''Jim Brown, 84, of New Bethel Road died Friday at his residence. The funeral will be Monday at 1 p.m. at Spry Funeral Home in Athens.
Mr. Brown was a member of the Church of Christ, a World War II army veteran and a retired farmer.
Survivors include one daughter, Frances Murphy of Haines City, Fla.; four sons, Jimmy Brown of Elkmont, Harry Brown of Benton Harbor, Mich., David Brown of Athens and D.W. Brown of Yakima, Wash.; three sisters, Thelma Smith of Lawrenceburg, Tenn., Emma Lee Dempsey of Birmingham and Maudie Lou Brown of Athens; and 10 grandchildren.
Paul H. Gehlhaus
Paul Herbert Gehlhaus, 69, of Huntsville died Friday at a local hospital. The funeral will be announced at a later date. Drs. Mel Strain and Jerald Landrey will officiate.
Burial will be in Maple Hill Cemetery with Laughlin Service Funeral Home in charge.
Mr. Gehlhaus was a research chemist at Rolm and Haas Company at Redstone Arsenal and in Spring House, Penn. He retired in 1990. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Huntsville and a member of the American Chemical Society.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara Gehlhaus; two daughters, Deborah Gehlhaus Stubbs of Rome, Ga., and Margaret Gehlhaus McIntyre of Visalia, Calif.; and one sister, Gertrude Walker of Manasquan, N.J.
Visitation will be Monday from 5-7 p.m.
Donations may be made to the First Presbyterian Church or Elder Care Trinity United Methodist Church.
Robert Lewis Hall
ATHENS - Robert Lewis Hall, 52, of U.S. 31 South, died Thursday at an Athens hospital. A memorial service will be today at 3 p.m. at Spry Funeral Home.
Mr. Hall was a member of Berea Baptist Church in Moulton, a Navy and Air Force veteran and a self-employed landscaper.
Survivors include one daughter, Janice Hall of Chicago; one stepdaughter, Leisa Mason of Decatur; one stepson, Ray Stephens of Decatur; his mother, Dovie Hall of Decatur; five sisters, Sylvia Lovelace of Athens, Pearl Barnett of California, Beulah Jones of Florida, and Ellie Potts and Becky Davis, both of Decatur.
Dorothy J. Hammonds
Dorothy J. Hammonds, 52, of 5042 Grizzard Road, Huntsville, died Thursday at a local hospital.
The funeral will be Monday at noon at St. Bartley P.B. Church with Rev. John Clay officiating.
Burial will be in St. Ruth Cemetery with Royal Funeral Home in charge.
Survivors include a son, Michael Williams of Washington, D.C.; six sisters, Lillian H. Warren, Mary Whitman, Jewell H. Jones, Connie H. Marshall, and Beverly J. Hammonds of Huntsville, and Emma L. Hammonds of Petersburg, VA.
James L. Hendrix
James Lain "Shorty" Hendrix, 72, of Huntsville died Friday at a local hospital. The funeral will be Monday at First Cumberland Presbyterian Church at 10 a.m. with Rev. Bob Weston and Dr. Jim Roberts officiating.
Burial will be Monday at 3 p.m. in New Salem Cemetery in Bethel Springs, Tenn., with Valhalla Funeral Home in charge.
Mr. Hendrix will lie in state one hour before the funeral.
Mr. Hendrix was retired from NASA and owned and operated Hendrix Printing Company. He was a member and elder of First Cumberland Presbyterian Church, a member of the Lions Club, and a past board member of the Christmas Charities.
Survivors include three daughters, Pat Hendrix of Louisville, Ky., Linda Mullinix of Jamestown, Tenn., and Cathy R. Day of Huntsville; one sister, Sue Miller of Bethel Springs, Tenn.; and two grandchildren.
Visitation will be today from 6-8 p.m. at Valhalla Funeral Home.
Icie Mae LeCroix
ATHENS - Icie Mae LeCroix, 88, of Blackburn Road died Friday at a Huntsville hospital. The funeral will be today at 2 p.m. at Spry Funeral Home with Warren Glass officiating.
Mrs. LeCroix was a member of Valley View Church of Christ and a homemaker.
Survivors include her husband, Max M. LeCroix; two daughters, Patsy Burroughs and Shelby Isbell, both of Athens; and one son, Bobby Paul LeCroix of Athens.
Luther H. Legg
FALKVILLE - Luther Henry Legg, 66, died Saturday at his residence. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Peck Funeral Home of Hartselle.
Donna V. Newton
Donna V. Newton, 43, of Huntsville died Friday at a local hospital. The funeral will be Monday at 2 p.m. at Laughlin Chapel with Jim Ashworth officiating.
Mrs. Newton was a special education teacher at Westlawn Elementary in Huntsville. She recieved her masters degree from the University of Alabama in Huntsville and was a graduate of UA in Tuscaloosa and Grissom High School.
Survivors includer her husband, David E. Newton; one son, Ryan Lee Newton of Huntsville; her parents, Don and Lana Van Nostrand of Huntsville; two brothers, Randall Louis Van Nostrand and Richard Lee Van Nostrand, both of Huntsville; and seven nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be today at Laughlin Service from 6-8 p.m.
Memorials may be made to the American Red Cross or the American Cancer Society.
Willie C. Pennington
FLAT ROCK - Willie C. Pennington, 88, died Friday. The funeral will be today at 3 p.m. at the Kerby Funeral Home in Henagar with the Rev. Dan Kirkpatrick and the Rev. Jimmy Carson officiating.
Survivors include his wife, Dovie Stone of Chattanooga; and two sisters, Otha Morton of Geraldine and Aileen Morrison of Rossville, Ga.

REECE CITY - Laura Wisner, 84, died Friday. The funeral will be today at noon at the Rainsville Funeral Home with the Rev. Fred Glover and the Rev. Roy Bryant officiating.
