Rev. J.T. McInnis
The Rev. J.T. McInnis, a retired Baptist minister who had been pastor of several churches in the region, died Tuesday after a lengthy illness. He was 76.
Originally from McLain, Miss., McInnis came to Mobile at the age of 14. He was a member of Bethel Missionary Baptist Church.
Before retiring 17 years ago, he had spent 13 years as a pastor. The churches he served included Howell Missionary Baptist Church on Natchez Road; New Hope Baptist Church in Agricola, Miss.; Rounsville Baptist Church in Deer Park, Ala.; Atmore Missionary Baptist Church in Atmore, Ala.; and Hall's Creek Baptist Church near Atmore.
Prior to his ministerial career, he taught Sunday school for 20 years.
A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, McInnis had worked for Amoco Oil Co.
His wife, Margie Pierce McInnis of Mobile, remembered her husband as a "wonderful man" who tried to be a good neighbor. He often would do whatever he could to help out his elderly neighbors, including taking out the garbage for them, she said.
"He was well-loved by all his neighbors, " she said.
While serving as a Sunday school teacher, McInnis dealt a great deal with teen-agers. "I feel he helped a lot of young people, " Mrs. McInnis said.
The couple was married Dec. 17, 1941, just a few days after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, she recalled. Her husband will be buried on their 57th wedding anniversary.
In addition to his wife, McInnis is survived by one daughter, Carol Ann McInnis of Pensacola; two sisters, Vernon Leroy of Biloxi, and Essie Johnson of Pensacola; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Services are scheduled for 10 a.m. today at Radney Funeral Home on Dauphin Street, with burial in Palestine Cemetery.

Betty Jo Cary
Betty Jo Cary, who moved to Mobile this year, died Wednesday at her home. She was 69.
Mrs. Cary, a native of Birmingham, had been a longtime resident of St. Petersburg, Fla.
Survivors include four children, Robin Johnson and Nancy Bitterman, both of Mobile, Meggan Lutes of Gallatin, Tenn., and Lisa King of Clearwater, Fla.; her mother, Minnie Bryant of Largo, Fla.; a brother, Robert Bryant of Largo; a sister, Susan Partin of New Jersey; four grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
Graveside services are set for 11 a.m. Saturday at Valhalla Memorial Gardens, with visitation at Valhalla Memorial Funeral Home in Semmes from 9 a.m. until services begin.

Brenda Kay Harris
Brenda Kay Jackson Harris, a lifelong Mobile resident, died Sunday in a local hospital after a lengthy illness. She was 41.
Survivors include two daughters, Nafeesa Harris and Shalamar Harris, both of Mobile; four brothers, Carl Hall of Mobile, Frances Hall, Leroy Hall and Dedrick Jackson, all of New York; and her grandmother, Doretha York of Mobile.
Visitation will be at New Christian Springs Baptist Church, 324 Church St. in Prichard, Saturday from 9 a.m. until services begin at 11 a.m. Burial will be at Magnolia Cemetery.
Memorial Funeral Home of Prichard is in charge.

Gwineth E. Hearn
MOUNT VERNON - Gwineth Elizabeth Hearn, who worked as a mental health technician, died Wednesday at her Mount Vernon home. She was 66.
Mrs. Hearn, a native of Atmore, Ala., was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include her husband, Jack C. Hearn of Mount Vernon; six daughters, Deborah Turner, Melissa R. Prastina and Sharon Powell, all of Mount Vernon, Karen Burge of Citronelle, Darlene Hickman of Mobile and Sarena D. Davis of Kailua, Hawaii; a sister, Melba Jean Lundy of Mobile; and 10 grandchildren.
Visitation will be tonight from 6 to 9 at Freeman Funeral Home in Citronelle. Graveside services are set for 1 p.m. Saturday at Community Cemetery in Mount Vernon.

Nathaniel J. Smith Sr.
Nathaniel John Smith Sr., a former pipefitter and boilermaker, died Wednesday at the family residence. He was 107.
Smith resided in Mobile County for more than 75 years. He spent more than 22 years at the Alabama Shipyard. He was recognized on several occasions for his work and received the Presidential Citation for his superior pipefitting abilities during World War II at Fort Whiting Field.
Survivors include three daughters, Myrtle Lee of Whistler, Katie Barnes of Fairhope and Bertha Virginia Hinchey of Semmes; a son, Nathaniel John Smith Jr. of Mobile; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren and great-great-great-grandchildren.
Services are set for 1 p.m. today at Mobile Memorial Gardens Funeral Home, with burial at Mobile Memorial Gardens.

Hollis H. Travis
Hollis H. Travis, a veteran of World War II, died Thursday. He was 80.
Travis, a native of Wiggins, Miss., resided in Mobile. During the war, he was a captain in the 403rd Artillery and a POW camp commander in Austria. He earned the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart.
Travis received his bachelor's degree in engineering from Purdue University. He was a member of Azalea Masonic Lodge F&AM;, South Brookley Methodist Church and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Dorothia Miller Travis; two sons, Michael Allen Travis of Deer Park, Texas, and Richard Travis of Mansfield, Texas; a daughter, Diana Hood of Orinda, Calif.; ae sister, Rae Nelson of Mobile; and seven grandchildren.
Visitation will be Sunday from 5 to 8 p.m. at Serenity Funeral Home. Services are set for 10 a.m. Monday at the funeral home, with burial at Serenity Memorial Gardens.
Memorials may be made to South Brookley Methodist Church.
