Edward L. Cross
Edward L. Cross, who had served as a band director at various high schools and colleges in the South and Southwest, died Friday in Chickasaw. He was 86.
The Chickasaw resident was a native of Minden, La. He was a 1929 graduate of Minden High School, where he had played in the band.
He attended Normal College, now Northwestern State University of Louisiana in Natchitoches. He received his master's degree in music from Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill.
Cross was a veteran of World War II, having served from 1942 to 1946.
Survivors include two stepsons, Lonnie P. Jarrell of Fort Worth, Texas, and William D. Jarrell of Chickasaw; and two sisters, Oma Cross Langston of Minden and Novilla Cross Zerangue of Pineville, La.
Visitation will be at Radney Funeral Home in Saraland from 5 to 8 this evening. Services and burial will take place in Minden.

Claude J. Edwards
Claude James Edwards, a retired electronics technician supervisor at Pensacola Naval Air Station, died Wednesday at the age of 74.
Edwards, a native of Chickasaw, was a resident of Prichard.
He was an agent for the Booker T. Washington Insurance Co. Mobile District No. 17.
Edwards had attended Ella Grant Mobile County Training School and Alabama A&M; University.
He was a member Pine Grove AME Church.
Survivors include his wife, Ruby S. Edwards of Prichard; one son, Robert L. Edwards of Prichard; a brother, Henry B. Edwards of New Orleans; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be at Pine Grove AME Church on Thursday from 9 a.m. until the noon services. Burial will be in Whispering Pines Cemetery with Hodge's Funeral Chapel directing.

Barbara Head Morris
Barbara Head Morris, a lifelong resident of Mobile, died Friday in a local hospital. She was 77.
She is survived by three sons, Walter Morris and Kenneth Morris of Mobile and Robert Morris of Atlanta; a sister, Helen Croft of Evergreen; two grandchildren; and other relatives.
Memorials may be made to Government Street United Methodist Church or the charity of the mourner's choice.
Pine Crest Funeral Home on Dauphin Island Parkway is in charge of arrangements.

Madge Lee Young
Madge Lee Young, a native of Deer Park, Ala., and resident of Wilmer, died Thursday in a local hospital. She was 71.
Survivors include her husband, Lawrence Young of Wilmer; three sons, Willard Kenneth Lee Young and Lawrence Samuel Young, both of Chunchula, and Thomas Paul Young of Wilmer; her mother, Minnie Lee Curry of Chickasaw; two brothers, Woodrow Curry of Chickasaw and Edgar M. Curry of Wilmer; four sisters, Vera Matheny of Eight Mile, Freda Hammons, Janice Andrews and Fredna E. Waite, all of Chickasaw; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Services are scheduled for 10 a.m. today at Valhalla Memorial Funeral Home in Semmes with burial in Valhalla Memorial Cemetery.

Jerry L. Campbell
Jerry L. Campbell, a Birmingham native and a retired human resources supervisor at CIA Specialty Chemicals in McIntosh, died Thursday at the age of 56.
Campbell graduated from Stillman College in Tuscaloosa and later served four years in the U.S. Navy, including a tour in Vietnam. He was then employed at Stillman College as director of admissions and placement.
Campbell was a member of the American Management Association, American Personnel Guidance Association, Mobile Area Mardi Gras Association, and Prichard Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi. He was also a member of Stone Street Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Dr. Helen E. Campbell; one daughter, Jerrelen Gray Campbell; three sisters, Dr. Myrtle V. Campbell, Dr. DeSilver Cohen and Dr. Gloria Campbell-Whatley.
Services are set for 11 a.m. Tuesday at Stone Street Baptist Church, with viewing and Friends Reception one hour before. Burial will follow in Lawn Haven Cemetery in Theodore, with Johnson-Allen Funeral Home in charge.

Robert C. Chandler
Robert C. Chandler, an Amory, Miss., native and a Mobile resident since 1942, died Friday at his home. He was 87.
Chandler was a member of Cottage Hill Baptist Church and a former employee of Mobile Steel Co.
He is survived by his wife, Sadie Renick Chandler of Mobile; one son, Robert G. Chandler of Mobile; one daughter, Mae Beth Hankins of Mobile; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Mobile Memorial Gardens Funeral Home, with visitation one hour before. Burial will be in Mobile Memorial Gardens.

Joseph F. Meek Sr.
Joseph F. "Joe Frank" Meek Sr., 79, a native of Burke's Garden, Va., and a resident of Mobile, died Friday in a local hospital.
Meek graduated from Burke's Garden High School, attended Bluefield College in Virginia and studied electronic engineering in Chicago.
During World War II, Meek was a sergeant in the U.S. Army's American Division in the South Pacific. Meek was an electronics engineer in the Naval Ordinance Laboratory and retired from the Navy in 1978. He moved to Burke's Garden, where he was president of the community association and Central Lutheran Church Congregation.
Meek retired to Mobile in 1986. He was a member of St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Mobile.
He is survived by two daughters, Margaret M. Mixon of Millersville, Md., and E. Jeanne Bass of Bowie, Md.; one son, Joseph F. Meek Jr. of Jacksonville, Fla.; three stepchildren, P. Jefferson Martin of Mobile, Stephen L. Martin of Montgomery and Carolyn L. Martin of Keene, N.H.; and seven grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Monday at Peery and St. Clair Funeral Home at 111 Ben Bolt Ave. Tazewell, Va. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Central Lutheran Church in Burke's Garden. Burial will follow in the family lot at the church cemetery.
