Morris S. Altice
Secret Service agent Altice dies
Morris S. Altice knew from early childhood that he wanted to be a Secret Service agent, and that's what he became, family members said Tuesday as they mourned the death of the 31-year-old Mobile native.
During his eight years with the Secret Service, Altice helped guard vice presidents Dan Quayle and Al Gore and their families, they said.
Altice died in a vehicle crash Christmas day near Washington, as he was returning to his Laurel, Md., home, family members said.
About 200 Secret Service agents attended a memorial service for Altice on Monday in Washington, according his family.
Altice graduated from B.C. Rain High School in 1985, earned an associate degree from Bishop State Community College and a bachelor of science degree in political science from American University in Washington.
Altice's sister, Vanessa Altice Steadman of Maryland, said Tuesday at her parents' home in Mobile that her brother achieved his goal of becoming a Secret Service agent soon after graduating from the university.
"I remember when he (Altice) was in the first or second grade and they had these little certificates that they could get so they could become honorary Secret Service men, " Mrs. Steadman said. "When Morris received his, he thought that was a really cool thing to have, and he said that was what he really wanted to do."
Her husband, Mario Steadman, 35, said he was "totally impressed" by the number of Secret Service agents who attended his brother-in-law's memorial service Monday.
Mrs. Steadman said Gore and members of his family had become friends with Altice because of his close association with them as their Secret Service guard. One of Gore's children attended the memorial service, she said.
Joseph McCray, 60, past president of the Mobile Area Mardi Gras Association, remembered Altice as a "very nice young man, very congenial."
He said Altice and his son, Joseph McCray III, had attended high school together, and that several years ago, Altice had been a knight in the MAMGA king and queen court.
Altice's funeral services will be held in Mobile on Thursday. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial. Burial will be in Lawn Haven Memorial Cemetery.
