Valarie Stephens
Valarie "Mattie Lee" Stephens, a lifelong member of Martin Luther Lutheran Church ELCA, died Monday. She was 69.
A native of Clarke County, she was a longtime resident of Mobile.
Survivors include a brother, Roland Stephens, and four sisters, Helen Williams, Irene Webster, Johnnie Sigmon of Marietta, Ga., and Mattie Miller.
Viewing will be from noon to 5 p.m. Friday at Christian Benevolent Funeral Home. Visitation will be at Martin Luther Lutheran Church, 1267 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Ave., on Saturday from 2 p.m. until the 3 p.m. services begin. Burial will be at Oaklawn Cemetery.

Edwina West
Edwina "Wena" West, a native of Creola, died Friday in Prichard. She was 96.
Mrs. West had lived in Creola for 90 years and was the granddaughter of Julia and Andrew Jackson, who settled in Creola after slavery ended and became influential in the community, family members said.
Survivors include her cousins, Juanita Hall Crenshaw of Prichard, Amelia Johnson, Velma Jones, Isaac Burden and James P. Houston of Mobile, Benjamial Kirksey, Emma Robinson of Saraland, Ruth Ellen Walker, Beatrice Boaston and Arthur Davis Jr. of Creola.
Viewing will be from noon to 5 p.m. Friday at Christian Benevolent Funeral Home, and after 9 a.m. Saturday at Starlight Missionary Baptist Church on U.S. 43 in Satsuma. Visitation will be begin at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the church, with services at 11 a.m. Burial will be at Andrew and Julia Jackson Cemetery in Creola.

H.O. Swanson
ATLANTA - The Rev. H.O. Swanson, a former Mobile pastor, died Dec. 1 in Atlanta.
An Alabama native, Swanson was former pastor of Metropolitan AME Church of Mobile and a retired presiding elder of the Mobile District of the Central Alabama Conference of the AME Church.
He had been involved in numerous civic and community organizations, including the Mobile Interdenominational Ministerial Alliance in Mobile and the AME Ministerial Alliance in Mobile.
Survivors include his wife of many years, Lillie R. Swanson; a son, Johnny Swanson; and two grandchildren.
Services are set for 1 p.m. today at Big Bethel AME Church in Atlanta.

Bobbie G. Gilmore Sr.
Bobbie Gene Gilmore Sr., who worked as a commercial fisherman for more than 45 years, died Tuesday at the age of 64.
Gilmore was a Bayou La Batre native and resident.
Survivors include his wife of nine years, Roberta Thompson Gilmore; two daughters, Donna Jean Bosarge and Jenny Havard; a son, Bobbie Gene Gilmore Jr.; two stepchildren, Michael C. Clark and Denise M. Bosarge; seven grandchildren; a step-grandchild; and a great-grandchild.
Services are set for 2 p.m. today at Independent Church of God. Burial will be in Oddfellow Cemetery. Mobile Memorial Gardens Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Tiburs Holcombe Jr.
Tiburs Maurice Holcombe Jr., a newborn, died Monday at a local hospital.
Survivors include his parents, Andrea Kidd and Tiburs Maurice Holcombe Sr.; his grandparents, Valerie Kidd, Edward Porter and Gail Holcombe; and his great-grandmother, Annie Finkley, all of Mobile.
Graveside services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday at Rising Sons Cemetery with Lovett's Funeral Chapel directing.

Willie J. Abston
Willie James Abston, a member of St. Mark Christian Church, died Saturday at a local hospital. He was 55.
Abston, a native of Lucedale, Miss., was a resident of Mobile.
Survivors include two sisters, Betty Johnson of California and Mable McCann of Mobile; and three brothers, Harry Abston, Larry Abston and Herman Abston, all of Mobile.
Visitation will be at Memorial Funeral Home on Viaduct Street in Prichard on Saturday from 9 a.m. until the 11 a.m. services.

Willie Longmire
Willie Longmire, a native of Gosport and longtime resident of Mobile, died on Saturday. He was 61.
Mr. Longmire, a self-employed barber, was a member of Mount Sinai Baptist Church.
He is survived by a son, Derek Tucker; two brothers, Eddie Longmire and Hezzie Longmire; and three sisters, Ethel Longmire, Patsy Hughes and Sarah Horne, all of Mobile; and three grandchildren.
Visitation will be held Saturday from 11 a.m. until the 1 p.m. funeral at Mount Sinai Baptist Church in Whistler. Burial will be in Whispering Pines Cemetery. Arrangements are by Reese Funeral Home.
