Frank "Feb" Bolling Jr.
Past USA baseball standout 'Feb' Bolling dies at 40; massive heart attack suspected
Frank "Feb" Bolling Jr., a former outstanding baseball player at the University of South Alabama and son of former Major League All-Star second-baseman Francis E. Bolling Sr. of Mobile, died Thursday in Fairhope. He was 40.
"It's a tough thing to lose your son, " said his father Friday night. "Everything was at the peak of life."
The cause of death was unclear. Bolling, a resident of Gautier, Miss., had been out to dinner in Fairhope and may have suffered a massive heart attack, his father said, adding that an autopsy was being done.
He said he was unaware of any existing medical problems with his son. "He was in great health, loved the outdoors, loved to fish, didn't smoke, and visited his doctor regularly."
A native of Mobile, Bolling, who was born in the month of February and whose initials are F.E.B., was known by the nickname "Feb" because the family didn't want to call him "Junior, " his father said.
Feb Bolling attended St. Pius X School and McGill-Toolen High School where he showed great promise as a shortstop. He received a baseball grant from the University of South Alabama, where he played ball for four years and was Most Valuable Player his senior year, according to his father
After graduating, however, Bolling decided to go into business rather than to pursue a professional baseball career like his father, who had played for teams in Detroit, Milwaukee and Atlanta, and his uncle, Milton Bolling, who had played for Boston and Detroit. Both were inducted into the Mobile Sports Hall of Fame.
"He would have played if someone had offered him a big opportunity, " his father said. He said that his son evaluated himself and, while he knew he was a good college player, he was unsure how he would fare in professional baseball. "I didn't want to push him."
The decision was a good one, his father said. After graduating, Feb Bolling worked in Mobile doing leases in the petroleum business before taking a position as a manager at a retail petroleum company in Mississippi. He became vice president of the Mississippi operation of Midstream Fuel Co. in Pascagoula and had been in that business for 12 or 13 years, his father said.
"He was real happy over there, " said his father. "He was a wonderful son and a good buddy. I never thought I'd outlive a child. People have been so nice. It helps during a time like this."
The Most Rev. Oscar Lipscomb, archbishop of the Archdiocese of Mobile and a family friend, will officiate at Bolling's services, his father said.
Bolling is also survived by his wife, Patricia Bugg Bolling; and three children, Heather Bolling, 16, Frank E. "Trey" Bolling III, 12, and Emily Bolling, 4, all of Gautier; his mother, Suanne Bolling; two sisters, Victoria Bolling Yarbrough and Melissa Bolling Hannahan; and a brother, Chris Bolling, all of Mobile.
Visitation will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Gautier, with Mass at 11 a.m. Graveside services are scheduled for 1 p.m. Monday in Mobile Memorial Gardens.
Jackson County Funeral Services in Escatawpa, Miss., is handling arrangements.
