Augusta E. Wilson
Services held for Augusta E. Wilson, former Mobile attorney and congressional candidate
JACKSON, Miss. - Augusta Elliott Wilson, a retired attorney who had practiced in Mobile for many years, died Wednesday in Jackson. She was 60.
The former Mobile resident was a native of Rosedale, Miss. She had been a land developer and an insurance agent in Pascagoula before practicing law in Mobile from 1973 until retiring in 1995.
In 1974, she was the Democratic Party nominee for Congress in Alabama's 1st District.
She was former publications director of the Democratic National Committee in Washington, D.C., and a congressional staff member. She had also been executive assistant to the late Arkansas Gov. Winthrop Rockefeller.
Her book, "Leader in the House, " was published by Parthenon Press.
Miss Wilson attended Stratford Hall Preparatory School in Virginia in 1957 and went to Vanderbilt University, where she was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta fraternity.
She received numerous academic and scholarship honors. She taught English literature at the University of Mississippi and was an English instructor at Delta State College in Cleveland, Miss.
She received her master's degree in English literature from the University of Mississippi and her juris doctorate degree from Catholic University law School in Washington, D.C., where she served on the editorial staff of the Law Journal.
She had served as associate director for the Coalition for Rural America and counsel to the Rural Resources Institute.
Among her survivors are a sister, Mary Elizabeth Wilson Pierce of Mobile; and a brother, William Roberts Wilson Jr. of Jackson, Miss.
Graveside services took place Thursday at Woodlawn Cemetery in Sumner, Miss.

Verna DeLoach
Verna Lee Havens DeLoach, a former employee of Merchants National Bank, died Friday at a local hospital. She was 73.
Mrs. DeLoach, a native of Fort Worth, Texas, was a longtime Mobile resident. She retired from Merchants National Bank with 38 years of service. She had served as head teller of the Downtown Motor Branch and later was vault custodian at the Spring Hill branch.
She was a member of Cottage Hill Baptist Church, Daughters of the Nile, Abba Temple Shrine, the Pageantry Unit and the Abbettes.
Survivors include her husband, P.W. "Bill" DeLoach of Mobile; three sons, Bill Havens of Mobile, Frank Aucoin of Charleston, S.C., and Gerald DeLoach of Summerville, S.C.; a daughter, Sharon Keelin of Statesboro, Ga.; a sister, Evelyn Cannon of Mobile; and a number of grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Mobile Memorial Gardens Funeral Home, with services at 11 a.m. Monday. Radney Funeral Home on Dauphin Street is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials may be made to the transportation fund of Abba Temple Shrine for Children, 7701 Hitt Road, Mobile, AL 36695.

Shearie Marshall
Shearie Miller Marshall, a member of the Retired Teachers Association, died Thursday at her home. She was 86.
Mrs. Marshall, a lifelong Mobilian, was a parishioner at St. James Major Catholic Church, where she was a member of the Ladies of Charity, the Archdiocese Council of Catholic Women, the Drexel Society and the Rosary Group.
She also was a member of the National Council of Negro Women and an alumna of Alabama State University.
She is survived by a number of relatives.
Viewing will be from noon to 5 p.m. Sunday at Christian Benevolent Funeral Home. Viewing also will be after 10 a.m. Monday at St. James Major Catholic Church, 714 College St. in Prichard, with visitation from 11 a.m. until Mass is celebrated at noon. Burial will be in Magnolia Cemetery.

Barbara W. Trauner
Barbara Woodham Trauner, a native of Bishopville, S.C., and resident of Mobile, died Wednesday at an area hospital. She was 65.
She is survived by her husband, Paul Trauner of Mobile; a son, Jimmy McDonald of Fort Walton Beach, Fla.; two daughters, Sandy McDonald of Buffalo, N.Y., and Sherry Swann of Satsuma; her mother, Theo Lang of Bishopville; a brother, Robert Woodham of Bishopville; and four grandchildren.
A private memorial service is planned.

Helen F. Turner
LEAKESVILLE, Miss. - Helen Faye Turner, a retired registered nurse, died Wednesday at an area hospital. She was 68.
Mrs. Turner, a native of Hattiesburg, Miss., and resident of Leakesville, had served as director of nurses at Melody Nursing Home.
Survivors include her husband, George Henry Turner of Leakesville; a son, Max Turner of Mobile; two daughters, Ann Wood of Lynchburg, Va., and Karen Screptock of Sterling, Va.; three brothers, William C. Moore of Theodore, Richard Moore of Hattiesburg and James Moore of San Diego; a sister, Joanne Dabbs of Clovis, Calif.; and six grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Freeman Funeral Home in Leakesville, with services at 11 a.m. Monday. Burial will be in Sweetwater Cemetery in Leakesville.

ROBERT EVART REID
GULF SHORES - Robert Evart Reid, a native of Pontiac, Mich., and a winter resident of Gulf Shores, died Monday, Dec. 27, 1999. He was 74.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Cholak Reid of Gulf Shores and Atlanta, Mich.
A memorial service will be held at a later date in Atlanta, Mich.
Arrangements are by Baldwin Funeral Home in Gulf Shores.

Bernice Thompson
Bernice C. Thompson, a Mobile homemaker and a member of Clearwater Church of God, died Monday at a local hospital. She was 75.
Miss Thompson was a native of Hobson, Ala.
Survivors include three sisters, Pauline Harben of Saraland, Kathleen Trimnal of Mobile and Emogene Brown of Sun Lakes, Ariz.
Services are set for 10 a.m. today at Lathan Funeral Home in Chatom, with burial at Pine Level Cemetery in Hobson.
