Alabama, U.S., County Marriage Records, 1805-1967 - 1814-1935

Joaquin M. Campbell

Joaquin Melvin Campbell, an area minister and musician in the Mobile and Florida areas, died Friday in a local hospital.

A native Mobilian, Campbell served as pastor at Mount Pilgrim African Baptist Church in Milton, Fla. He had pastored several churches around the eastern United States.

He was organist for numerous fellowships around the country and taught piano.

Campbell attended A.F. Owens Elementary School, Dunbar Junior High School and was a 1963 graduate of Central High School. He attended the New England Conservatory of Music, Selma University and the University of Mobile.

Survivors include his children, Kenneth Kidd of Pensacola, Eikerenkoetter Hollis and Joaquin Hollis, Tarsha Campbell of Atlanta and Velvet Johnson of North Carolina; his parents, Clarence and Mary Anna Ray Campbell; his brothers and sisters, William Campbell of Clio, Ala., Lena McAfee of Chicago, Roderick Campbell, Audrey Bettis and Terry Campbell, all of Mobile, and Elizabeth Tucker of New York; and four grandchildren.

Viewing will be from noon to 5 p.m. Wednesday at Revelation Missionary Baptist Church on Taylor Lane, where visitation is set for Thursday from 9 a.m. until the 11 a.m. service. Burial will be in Whispering Pines Cemetery. Hodge's Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

John J. Dennis

IRVINGTON - John Jackson "Jack" Dennis, who had worked for many years with Vanity Fair Corp., died Sunday at a local hospital. He was 75.

A native of Monroeville, Dennis lived in Irvington. He was a 34-year employee of Vanity Fair, having served as plant manager in Butler, Ala., Atmore, Ala., and opened the plant in Bayou La Batre which later became Lee Jeans.

His memberships and involvements included Little League, the Boy Scouts, the Presbyterian Church and others.

Dennis attended Southwestern at Memphis where he was a member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity. He also attended the University of the South at Sewanee, Tenn., and graduated from the U.S. Naval Midshipman School (V-12) at Camp MacDonaugh in Plattsburg, N.Y.

During World War II, he served as a lieutenant j.g. aboard the USS LSMR 188, which took a direct hit from a kamikaze plane off the coast of Okinawa in 1945, according to family members. He received numerous decorations and commendations.

Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Elizabeth Brannigan Dennis; five children, Sue D. Dennis of High Point, N.C., John Thomas Dennis of Alpharetta, Ga., Edmond Jackson Dennis of Pearl, Miss., William Davison Dennis of Pass Christian, Miss., and Anne D. Hetzel of Atmore; and nine grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 tonight at Serenity Funeral Home, where services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Wednesday. Burial will be in Serenity Memorial Gardens Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to St. Margaret Catholic Church in Bayou La Batre; or a favorite charity.

Karlene R. Fowler

Karlene R. Fowler, a homemaker and resident of Mobile, died Sunday at a local hospital.

Mrs. Fowler, 61, was a native of Lewisville, Miss.

Survivors include her husband, Jerry E. Fowler of Mobile; one stepdaughter, Lori Ann Hatton of Mobile; one sister, Vira E. Cieutat of Mobile; one grandchild; and one great-grandchild.

Graveside services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Wednesday in Pine Crest Cemetery with Radney Funeral Home on Dauphin Street in charge.

Raymond Herzberg

Raymond Donald Herzberg, who owned a business repairing engineering copiers, died Saturday after suffering a stroke.

Herzberg, 45, was a longtime resident of Semmes.

Survivors include his wife, Susan Pancoast Herzberg; two sons, Bernard Raymond "Ben" Herzberg and Jeffery Drew Herzberg of Semmes; one brother, Robert Franklin Herzberg Jr.; three sisters, May LaRue Herzberg, Susan Ann Herzberg and Ruth Elizabeth Herzberg.

Services are set for 2 p.m. Saturday at Pine Crest Funeral Home's Cottage Hill Road Chapel, with visitation two hours prior to services.

James R. Lowry

James R. "Randy" Lowry died Saturday of an apparent heart attack at his home.

Lowry, 49, was a native and resident of Mobile.

Among his survivors is his wife of 31 years, Carol Ann Lowry of Mobile.

Private services will take place at later date. Mobile Memorial Gardens Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

N. William Newell Jr.

Norman William "Billy" Newell Jr., a native of Mobile County and resident of Kushla, died Sunday at his home. He was 39.

Survivors include two daughters, Jennifer Pierce and Cecily Smiley, both of Wilmer; his mother, Mary E. Newell Strickland; stepfather, Ray Strickland of Wilmer; four brothers, Bruce Newell, Roger Strickland and Randy Strickland, all of Wilmer, and Denny Ray Strickland of Nederland, Texas; two sisters, Nell B. Creel of Theodore and Angela D. McBride of Wilmer; and his grandmothers, Ruthie A. Miller of Wilmer and Maude Newell of Theodore.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 tonight at Valhalla Memorial Funeral Home in Semmes, where services are set for 1 p.m. Wednesday. Burial will be in Springhill Memorial Gardens.

Pearl C. Parker

Pearl Chastang Parker, a native of Chastang and resident of Mobile, died Sunday in a local hospital. She was 95.

She was a member of Franklin Street Missionary Baptist Church, where she served in the Missionary Society and on the Deaconess Board. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Eleanor Chapter No. 62.

She is survived by two children, Leon C. Parker Jr. of Atlanta and Frances Parker of Mobile; two brothers, Hurley Paul Chastang of West Hollywood, Calif., and Jeff Smith of Sacramento, Calif.; one sister, Esther Chastang of Los Angeles; two grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Viewing will be from noon to 5 p.m. Thursday at Christian Benevolent Funeral Home and after 10 a.m. Friday at Franklin Street Missionary Baptist Church. Visitation will be from noon until the 1 p.m. funeral Friday at the church. Burial will be in Roper Cemetery in Chastang.
