Honorary pallbearers were Carl Johnson, Gerry Robbins, Peter Panter, Leonance Vines, Ronnie Alexander and Woody Thornton. Active pallbearers were Jason Bethea, Stephen Bethea, Gerald Robbins, Doby Vines, Joe Vines and Aaron Sanders. Interment was in Pine Crest Cemetery. Funeral services were held from the Chapel of Mobile Memorial Gardens Funeral Home on Saturday, December 18, 1999 at 10 a.m. with Rev. Frank Taylor officiating. Pallbearers were Chris Loewen, Tim Loewen, Mark Davis, Scott Taylor, Jerry Robinson, Jr., Jerry Burnett, Stan Lewis and Wayne Robinson. Interment was in Mobile Memorial Gardens. Mr. Eugene Black:
A native of Long Island, New York, and a resident of Mobile, Alabama for a number of years, departed this life on Saturday, December 18, 1999. He was preceded in death by his parents, Harvey and Mozetta Black. He leaves to cherish his memories, a loving family, his wife, Marie Black; two daughters, Dawn and Tiffany Black; two sons, Jamarcus Black, all of Mobile, and Eugene Black, of Terre Haute, IN; two step-sons, Kevin of Mobile, and Korey of Central Islip, New York; two grandchildren, D-Navia Sheppard of Mobile and Brandon Capers of Charleston, South Carolina; one adopted sister, Brenda Scurry of Brooklyn, New York; father in law, John H. Nord; a very special person in his life, Ms. Arelia Richmond; four sisters-in-law, three brothers-in-law, one devoted, William Jackson of San Francisco, California; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends, one devoted, Nathaniel Green of Amnityville, New York. His remains will lie in state from the chapel of Reese Funeral Home on Wednesday, December 22, 1999 from 9:00 A.M. until the 11:00 A.M. funeral hour, with Rev. Cleveland Barren, Jr. officiating. Mr. William B. Welch:
Born in Meridian, MS on August 6, 1922 and died on Saturday, December 18, 1999 in a local health care facility. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Glo Boykin Welch; a daughter, Betsy Welch Bailey and her husband, Don, a son, William B. Welch, Jr; two granddaughters, Bonnie Glo Bailey and Annalee Elizabeth Bailey all of Mobile, AL; a brother, C. Hoye Welch, Jr. of Birmingham, AL and other relatives. Mr. Welch, a veteran of World War II, flew as a commissioned officer in the Army Air Corps. He began his business career with the Lerio Corporation in Mobile in January of 1948 after graduating from the University of Alabama with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. While at the University, he was inducted into Tau Beta Pi, Engineering' s highest Honorary. During his early years with the Lerio, Mr. Welch also taught Engineering evening classes at the University of Alabama - Mobile Extension Center. He served for many years as President and C.E.O . of Lerio after retiring in April of 1998. He continued to serve as Director Emeritus of the Board. Mr. Welch has been generous with his time and talents and has assumed leadership roles in many areas of Mobile's Cultural, Civic and Religious Life. He has been an active Lay Leader in his church, Dauphin Way United Methodist for many years, having chaired many committees and the Administrative Board. He was one of the signers of the Corporate Charter for establishing Prime Health, an HMO in Mobile and served on its Executive Committee since Prime Health's beginning. He has served his nation and community over the years ad follows: Board of Directors of National Association of Manufacturers, Board of Directors of Better Business Bureau, Board of Directors of Mobile Chapter of the American Red Cross, Board of Directors of Alabama Safety Council, Board of Directors of Mobile Personnel Association, President of Board of Directors of WHIL, Vice President of Mobile Opera, Inc., Campaign Chairman of Mobile United Way, Trustee Emeritus of Mobile United Way, President of Mobile Kiwanis Club, Lt. Governor of Mobile, President of Advisory Board of Kiwanis Boy's Club, Chairman of Board of Mobile Area Chamber of Commerce, Boy Scout Leader, was named "Executive of the Year of South Alabama 1984" by Alabama Business Review and was featured in the Book "Fifty Footprints to the Next Millennium" as one of the 25 most outstanding leaders of our area of this century. Mr. Welch was a longtime member of the Mobile Touchdown Club, Quarterback Club, Alabama Senior Golf Association, Air Force Association, Bienville Club, and Country Club of Mobile. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial be made to Dauphin Way United Methodist Church, 1507 Dauphin Street, Mobile, AL 36604. Relatives will hold a graveside service at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, December 21, 1999 at Pine Crest Cemetery. There will be a memorial service at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, December 21, 1999 in the Sanctuary Dauphin Way United Methodist Church. 75, of Montgomery, AL died Monday, December 20, 1999. He is survived by his wife, Fay M. Aycock, Montgomery, AL; two daughters and sons-in-law, Iris (Buddy) Jenkins, Montgomery, AL; Wendy (Jamie) Baker, Opelika, AL; one son and daughter-in-law, Ron (Beverly) Aycock, Sanford, FL; two sisters, Margaret Allen, Cordova, AL; Blanche Sherer, Jasper, AL; six grandchildren, Seth (Karen), Josh, Michael, Hannah-Beth, Micah and John-Mark. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 22, 1999 at White Chapel-Greenwood Funeral Home with Rev. Michael Rippy, Rev. Guy Mims and Rev. George Walters officiating. Mr. Bennie King Bryant Baldwin Jr.:
A native of Pensacola, FL and resident of Mobile, AL died on Sunday, December 19, 1999 in a Pensacola hospital. Mr. Baldwin was Chaplain of the J.H . McCormick Lodge #874. He was a member of Abba Temple Shrine, Scottish Rite of Free Masonry and Royal Order of Scotland. He is survived by his wife, Mary McRee Baldwin of Mobile; three children, Shirley B. (Bill) Lewis of Mobile, Edward M. (Melodie) Baldwin of Daphne AL, Patricia A. (Bud) Jones of Mobile; six grandchildren, three great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and other relatives. Visitation will be held from the Funeral Home on Tuesday December 21, 1999 from 5-8 P.M. Graveside services and Interment are scheduled for Wednesday, December 22, 1999 at 11:00 A.M. in Timney Cemetery (Fish River). Mary Garrett Betty:
75, of Charlotte, NC, died on Sunday, December 19, 1999, at Presbyterian Hospital. Mrs. Betty was born on July 13, 1924, in Montgomery, AL, a daughter of the late Berryman Garrett Betty and Laura Jones Betty. She was a graduate of Randolph Macon College in Virginia, and served as a legal secretary for law firms in Montgomery, AL, Mobile, AL, and Charlotte, NC. She retired after 40 years of service. She attended Selwyn Avenue Presbyterian Church and enjoyed sewing and needlepoint. Mrs. Betty is survived by her daughter, Virginia B. "Ginger" Godbold, and her husband, N.J. "Joey" Godbold, Jr., of Charlotte, N C; her son, Thomas F. "Tom" Betty, Jr., of Henagar, AL; five grandchildren, Kristine B. "Kristy" Ziegler, Emily A. Betty, Frances E. "Beth" Godbold, Paul J. Godbold, and David B. Godbold; one great grandson, Spencer Ziegler; one brother, Charles J. Betty, of Columbus, GA; a sister-in-law, Virginia B. Hollinger, of Camden, AL; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas F. Betty. A memorial service was held at 11 AM on Monday, December 20, 1999, in the Chapel at Selwyn Avenue Presbyterian Church, 2929 Selwyn Av enue, Charlotte, NC, with The Reverend Paul Rademach er officiating. There will be a graveside service at 1 PM on Thursday, December 23, 1999, at Pine Crest Cemetery, 1939 Dauphin Island Parkway, Mobile, AL, with The Reverend Edwin G. Thomas officiating.
