Helen C. McCarthy
Helen Claryce McCarthy, who resided in Mobile for more than 50 years, died Thursday at a local nursing facility. She was 86.
A native of Cullomburg, Ala., Ms. McCarthy grew up in Leroy.
She is survived by her sister, Lona Locke Anderson of Mobile.
Graveside services are set for 2 p.m. Saturday at Leroy Baptist Church Cemetery in Leroy.
The family prefers that memorials be made to the Alzheimer's Association of Mobile, the Ronald McDonald House of Mobile or to a favorite charity.
Lathan Funeral Home of Jackson, Ala., is in charge.

Herbert Moore
Herbert Moore, a native of Marion and resident of Mobile, died Thursday. The former brick mason was 87.
He is survived by his daughter, Mary Dean of Mobile; and three sisters, Gertrude Hicks of Tallulah, La., Lucille Gregg of Maggwood, Ill., and Estelle Heard of Chicago.
Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at Memorial Funeral Home in Prichard, with services to follow. Burial will be in Whispering Pines Cemetery.

Mamie H. Scruggs
Mamie Hayes Scruggs, a homemaker and member of Mount Olive Baptist Church in Saraland, died Wednesday at a local hospital.
Mrs. Scruggs, a native of Coffeeville, Ala., lived in Saraland.
Survivors include six children, Rosie Shepherd, Bessie Henry, Ivy Scruggs, Alyce Franklin, Franklin Scruggs and Jacqueline Smith; one brother, Leroy Williams; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be at 9 a.m. Tuesday at Mount Olive Baptist Church in Saraland, with the funeral following immediately at 11 a.m. Burial will be in Bailey Cemetery in Saraland. Reese Funeral Home of Prichard is in charge of arrangements.

Azelene Cochran
WAYNESBORO, Miss. - Azelene Cochran, a native of Alabama and resident of Waynesboro, Miss., died Wednesday. She was 74.
She is survived by her husband, Leonidas L. Cochran of Waynesboro; two daughters, Deborah Lee of Elberta and Linda Cochran of Mangolia Springs; three sons, Joseph and Warren Cochran of Waynesboro, and Tommy Cochran of Selma; three brothers, Ruven Douglas, James Douglas and Carlos Douglas, all of Magnolia Springs; 15 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be 11 a.m. today in Vernon Park Cemetery in Magnolia Springs. Arrangements are by Freeman Funeral Home in Waynesboro.

Mary E. Atchison
Mary Estell Atchison, a Waynesboro, Miss., native and Mobile resident, died Saturday.
The retired laundry manager was 94.
She is survived by a daughter, Jane Fleming of Mobile; a son, Sankey Atchison of Millry; nine grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 6 to 9 tonight at Lathan Funeral Home in Chatom. Services will begin at 2 p.m. Monday at the Hurricane Baptist Church in Melvin, with burial in the Hurricane cemetery.

Clara B. Spears
Clara Bell Spears, a Louisiana native and longtime Mobile resident, died Saturday at a local hospital. She was 88.
She is survived by six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Funeral arrangements are by Serenity Funeral Home.

Calvin Crenson "Cal" Deakle
Calvin Crenson "Cal" Deakle, a veteran of the U.S. Navy, died Sunday at a hospital in Oklahoma City. He was 62.
A native of St. Elmo, Deakle was a resident of Tanner Williams for the past five years. He had formerly lived in Oklahoma City for several years.
The 1955 graduate of Theodore High School served more than 20 years with the Navy, retiring as chief petty officer. He recently had been employed with the Alabama State Docks.
Survivors include his wife, Arela Deakle of Oklahoma City; two sons, Chuck Deakle and Jeff Deakle of Tanner Williams; one daughter, Laurie Deakle of Oklahoma City; three brothers, David R. Deakle of Theodore, Arthur D. Deakle and Irving Lee Deakle, both of Grand Bay; five sisters, Nancy D. Moore and Gwendolyn D. Hudson, both of Grand Bay, Debra D. Turner, Rosie D. Regan and Sandra D. Payne, all of St. Elmo; and three grandchildren.
Services took place at Capitol Hill Funeral Home in Oklahoma City. A memorial service is scheduled for 2 p.m. today at St. Elmo Bible Church.
The family requests that memorials be made to the St. Elmo Bible Church building fund.
