Martha Canary Evans
MOUNT VERNON - Martha Canary Evans, a homemaker and resident of Mount Vernon, died Saturday in a local hospital.
Mrs. Evans, 57, was a native of Mobile. She attended Lighthouse of Praise Holiness Church in Mount Vernon.
Survivors include her husband, Francis Evans of Mount Vernon; her mother, Wilhemina Sullivan of Mount Vernon; three sons, Nicky Byrd of Marshall, Texas, Wayne Evans of Mount Vernon and Anthony Evans of Chickasaw; three daughters, Debra Hodge of McIntosh, Darlene Evans and Martha Evans, both of Mount Vernon; three brothers, Clouis Sullivan, Chris Sullivan and Ted Sullivan, all of Mount Vernon; two sisters, Essie Houseknecht of Mobile and Arlene Byrd of Citronelle; and 14 grandchildren.
Visitation will be tonight from 6 to 9 at Freeman Funeral Home in Citronelle, where services are set for 2 p.m. Wednesday. Burial will be in Byrd Cemetery in Mount Vernon.

Alton L. Fountain
Alton Llavoid Fountain, a native of Ray City, Ga., and resident of Mobile, died Sunday in a local health care facility. He was 68.
Survivors include his wife, Peggy Fountain; four children, Lynn Counselman, Penney Atkins, A. Michael Fountain and Suzy Cleveland; his mother, Clarice Houston; brothers William T. Fountain and John Houston; two sisters, Anna Laura Newell and Rebecca Dailey; and seven grandchildren.
Services are set for 3 p.m. today at Our Savior Lutheran Church with visitation from 2 p.m. until service time. Burial will be in Mobile Memorial Gardens with Radney Funeral Home on Dauphin Street in charge of arrangements.

Hazel J. Lowery
Hazel Jeanette Lowery, a Coffeeville native and Semmes resident, died Saturday at a local hospital. She was 58.
She is survived by her mother, Ollie Mae Dews of Grove Hill; three daughters, Mary Freeman of Mobile, Dora Rider of Excel, Martha Ann Polsom of Lucedale, Miss.; four sons, Clifford Lee Dunagan of Houston, Robbie Dunagan of Grove Hill, Jesse Lowery of Jackson, and Tommie Lowery of Semmes; five brothers, Elroy Alford of Coffeeville, Buster Alford of Grove Hill, Johnnie Ray Alford and James Alford, both of Thomasville, and George Alford of Pine Hill; two sisters, Glenda Alford of Thomasville and Lelia Ray Alford of Grove Hill; 18 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 6 to 9 tonight at O'Bryant Funeral Home in Thomasville. Services will begin at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Goodhope Baptist Church in Grove Hill. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Starley Jean Weaver
Starley Jean Weaver, a lifelong resident of Mobile, died Saturday at the family residence.
Survivors include her husband, Grady E. Weaver of Mobile; her son, Michael Wayne Weaver of Fort Myers, Fla.; her daughters, Michelle Weaver of Fort Walton Beach, Fla., and Lori White of Mobile; three sisters, Deloris Wilson and Elizabeth Dumas of Mobile, and JoAnn Palmer of Buckatunna, Miss.; three brothers, John "Stubby" Phillips, Thomas "Popeye" Phillips of Lebanon, Tenn., and Wayne Phillips of Theodore; and three grandchildren.
Services are set for noon today at Mobile Memorial Gardens Funeral Home with visitation from 10 a.m. Burial will be in Dawes Cemetery.

Edith Mae West
Edith Mae West, a homemaker, died Saturday in Mobile. She was 77.
Mrs. West, a Mississippi native, lived in Eight Mile.
Survivors include one son, Walter Wayne West of Mobile; six daughters, Betty S. Hall, of Eight Mile, Patsy R. Knowles, Gladys Carol Landry, Dorothy A. Garrick, and Teresa Marlene Jackson, all of Mobile, and Roxie Lee Jones of Birmingham; one brother, Sherman West of Pensacola; three sisters, Christine Clark of State Line, Miss., Louise Boutwell of Bay Minette, and Delora Busby of Waynesboro, Miss.; 20 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren.
Services are set for 1 p.m. today at Freeman Funeral Home in Waynesboro, with burial in West Shady Grove Cemetery.

John Thomas Sr.
PINE APPLE - John Andrew Thomas Sr., a Navy veteran of World War II, died Sunday in a Greenville, Ala., hospital. He was 73.
The Mobile County native was a resident of Pine Apple.
Survivors include his wife, Marion Gottwald Thomas of Pine Apple; one daughter, Mary Buckingham of Plymouth, Ohio; two sons, John Thomas of Plymouth and Thomas "Tommy" Thomas of Crystal Lake, Ill.; two sisters, Margie Howard of Tibbie, Ala., and Ramona Hughes of Destin, Fla.; one brother, Clarence Thomas of Pine Apple; 13 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 tonight at Valhalla Memorial Funeral Home in Semmes, where services are set for 10 a.m. Wednesday. Burial will be in Valhalla Memorial Gardens.

Sister Stella Bru
NERINX, Ky. - Sister Stella Mary Bru, S.L., a graduate of Bishop Toolen High School in Mobile, died April 11 at Loretto Motherhouse in Nerinx. She was 83.
Sister Bru, who celebrated her 50th anniversary as a sister of Loretto in 1994, had served in various locations, including Santa Fe, N.M., El Paso, Texas, St. Louis and Denver. Nursing was her primary duty.
She retired in 1998.
Among her survivors are two sisters, Nellie Coskrey and Kathleen Ewert, both of Mobile.
Services took place Thursday at Loretto Motherhouse with burial in the Loretto Cemetery in Nerinx. Mattingly Funeral Home in Loretto, Ky., handled arrangements.
