Gordon Horsburgh Jr.

GULF BREEZE, Fla. - Gordon DeWitt Horsburgh Jr., a former Mobile resident, died Monday in an area hospital. He was 65.

Horsburgh, a resident of Gulf Breeze, was a retired revenue auditor with the state of Alabama. The Pensacola native was a member of Olive Baptist Church in Pensacola, the Mobile Stamp and Coin Club, and a life master bridge player.

Survivors include his wife, Rose Beard-Horsburgh of Gulf Breeze; two sons, Steven Horsburgh of New Hampshire and Daniel Beard of Gulf Breeze; four daughters, Deborah Gatwood of Fort Campbell, Ky., Cynthia Wallace of Birmingham, Debra Beard Shaw of Gulf Breeze and Dawn Beard Morris of Panama City, Fla.; two brothers, Hal Horsburgh of Atlanta and Gates Horsburgh of Baltimore, Md.; one sister, Sarah Waugh of Fort Walton Beach, Fla.; and 11 grandchildren.

Services are set for 11 a.m. today at Rose Lawn Funeral Home, 2942 Gulf Breeze Parkway in Gulf Breeze. Burial will be in Rose Lawn Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society; the Hospice of Northwest Florida; or Olive Baptist Church.

Vesta Mann

BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Vesta Capers Laney Mann, a native of Eufala and former resident of Mobile, died May 7 in Bellingham at the age of 102.

Mrs. Mann's interests included gourmet cooking, organic gardening, politics, church activities and cultural pursuits. She had also written for a newspaper in Hawaii.

Survivors include her daughters, Ruthie Laney of Baton Rouge, La., and Kathryn Swindol of Clute, Texas; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Burial will take place in Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Va. Green Acres Funeral Home of Bellingham is handling arrangements.

Katie B. Shephard

LUCEDALE, Miss. - Katie B. Shephard, a homemaker, died Monday at a Mobile hospital. She was 61.

Mrs. Shephard, a native of Greene County, Miss., was a resident of Lucedale. She attended Mount Calvary United Pentecostal Church.

Survivors include three sons, Mike Shephard and Marty Shephard, both of Lucedale, and Pat Shephard of Hattiesburg, Miss.; four brothers, John E. Lambert and Lee F. Lambert, both of Lucedale, John Martin Lambert of Shreveport, La., and Tex R. Lambert of Wiggins, Miss.; two sisters, Betty Sheeran of Athens, Ala., and Geraldine Prine of Dallas; and four grandchildren.

Services are set for 2 p.m. today at Freeman Funeral Home in Leakesville, Miss., with burial in Magnolia Cemetery in Lucedale.

George J. Brannan

George Jefferson Brannan, who had worked as a carpenter, died Wednesday in a local hospital. He was 79.

Brannan was a native of Hattiesburg, Miss., and a resident of Eight Mile. He attended the Church of Jesus Christ in Semmes.

Survivors include his wife, Marion Virginia Brannan of Eight Mile; one son, Marvin Brannan of Eight Mile; two daughters, Alice Dantzler of Satsuma and Joann Hornbeak of Eight Mile; 10 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 4 to 9 this evening at the Church of Jesus Christ, where services are set for 10 a.m. Friday. Burial will be in Epworth Cemetery in Epworth, Ala., with Freeman Funeral Home of Citronelle in charge.

Josephine A. Burke

Josephine A. Burke, who had worked as a program coordinator for Elder Hostel at the University of South Alabama, died Tuesday at a local nursing facility. She was 71.

Mrs. Burke, a lifelong Mobilian, was a member of the Professional Secretaries Association.

Survivors include one daughter, Kathleen C. Burke of Palm Beach, Fla.; one brother, Albert L. Ardoyno of Atlanta; one grandchild; and one great-grandchild.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Radney Funeral Home on Dauphin Street, with Christian wake services at 7 p.m. Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary's Catholic Church. Burial will be in Pine Crest Cemetery.

John H. Carter Sr.

John Henry Carter Sr., a veteran of the U.S. Army, died Monday after a lengthy illness. He was 81.

Carter, a native Mobilian, served in the Army as a sergeant. He also served 23 years in the U.S. Army Reserve.

After retiring from Brookley Field in 1987, he went to work as a real estate agent with Gordon and Son and Property Real Estate agencies.

A lifelong member of State Street AME Zion Church, he served on the steward board and the life membership council. He was an emeritus member of the trustee board.

He was also a member of the Comrades Social Club.

Survivors include his wife of 23 years, Linda Browne Carter of Mobile; five children, Linda Carter-Thompson of Oakland, Calif., Warner Carter and John Carter Jr., both of Mobile, Nadine Carter of Jacksonville, Fla., and Cheryl Carter of Boston; two stepsons, Anthony Small of Biloxi, and Michael Small of Baton Rouge, La.; one sister, Edna Forde of Mobile; and six grandchildren.

Viewing will be from noon to 5 p.m. Friday at Christian Benevolent Funeral Home. Viewing is also set after 9 a.m. Saturday at State Street AME Zion Church, with visitation from 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. service. Burial will be in Pine Crest Cemetery.

Minder Coleman

Minder Coleman, a quilter and a resident of Mobile for the past three years, died Sunday at the home of her daughter. She was 95.

Mrs. Coleman, a native of Wilcox County, founded the Freedom Quilting Bee in Alberta, Ala., where she had been involved in the making of many quilts.

Survivors include two sons, the Rev. Clay C. Coleman and Cornelius Coleman of Mobile; five daughters, Katie Patton, Artelia McMillian and Leaner Hunter of Mobile, Marie Anderson of Camden, Ala., and Minnie Cawthorn Coleman of Boykin, Ala.; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Services are scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Boykin, with burial in the church cemetery. Hudson Funeral Home in Camden is in charge of arrangements.
