ATHENS -- Funeral for Viola Grigsby, 88, of Lester will be Sunday at noon at Willow Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Bethel, Tenn., with the Rev. Kenneth Duke officiating.

Burial will be in Leggtown Cemetery with People's Funeral Home directing. The family will receive friends Saturday from 7 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mrs. Grigsby died Thursday, Feb. 10, 2000, at her home. She was born July 9, 1911, in Lester. She was a homemaker.

She is survived by her husband, Tom Grigsby; three sons, Jody Grigsby, Henry Grigsby, both of Lester, and Mitchell Grigsby of Elkmont; and one daughter, Carolyn Brown of Lester.

Jacqueline Hargrove
42, Decatur native

Funeral for Jacqueline Hargrove, 42, of Priceville will be Saturday at noon at Ridout's Brown-Service Funeral Home with the Rev. Todd Evans officiating.

Burial will be in Raper Cemetery.

Mrs. Hargrove died Thursday, Feb. 10, 2000, at her home. She was born Oct. 16, 1957, to Joel T. Sandlin and Clovis I. Russell Sandlin.

She is survived by one son, David Hargrove of Decatur; and three brothers, Joel Sandlin and Michael Sandlin, both of Decatur, and Mark Sandlin of Hartselle.

Eulyla Pheolene Johnson
71, homemaker

MOULTON -- Funeral for Eulyla Pheolene Johnson, 71, of Mount Hope will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Old Town Creek Baptist Church with the Rev. R.C. Borden officiating.

Burial will be in Rock Springs Cemetery with Elliott Funeral Home directing. The family will receive friends Saturday from 10 to 11 a.m. at the church.

Ms. Johnson died Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2000, at her home. She was born Jan. 6, 1929, in Lawrence County. She was a homemaker.

She is survived by one son, Billy Counts Johnson of Mount Hope; and two brothers, Roy Johnson of Fayetteville, Tenn., and Aaron Johnson of Ponahawk, Wis.

Pallbearers will be Henry Ford, Steve Miller, Johnny Riggs, Danny Russell, Doug Kimbrough and Chris Borden.

Alice Athel King
89, homemaker

MOULTON -- Funeral for Alice Athel King, 89, of Decatur was to be today at 11 a.m. at Elliott Funeral Home with the Rev. Darryl Wood officiating.

Burial was to be in Montgomery Cemetery.

Ms. King died Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2000, at Sunbridge Health Care Center in Decatur. She was born Oct. 4, 1910, in Lawrence County. She was a homemaker and a member of Moulton Baptist Church.

She is survived by one nephew, John Leggett of Moulton; and one niece, Joann Cowan of Tennessee.

Sam Pryor
89, construction worker and farmer

Funeral for Sam Pryor, 89, of Madison will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Mount Zion Cumberland Presbyterian Church with the Rev. James Robinson officiating.

Burial will be in Pryor-Thatch Cemetery with Reynolds Funeral Home directing. The family will receive friends Saturday night from 6 to 7 at the funeral home. The body also will be in the church 30 minutes before the funeral.

Mr. Pryor died Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2000, at his home. He was born April 10, 1910, in Limestone County, to Robert Pryor and Mariah Thatch Pryor. A construction worker and farmer, he was a member of Mount Zion Cumberland Presbyterian Church.

He is survived by one grandson, Bobby Joe Pryor of Athens; and three granddaughters, Annie Delores Wherry of Decatur, Shelia Taylor of Madison, and Alisa Harris and Theresa Harris, both of Decatur; 10 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

Elders of the church will be pallbearers.

Elmer Lee Roberts Sr.

HARTSELLE -- Funeral arrangements for Elmer Lee Roberts Sr., 63, of Lacey's Spring, who died Thursday, Feb. 10, 2000, at Crestwood Medical Center in Huntsville, will be announced by Peck Funeral Home.

Clovis I. Sandlin
64, Decatur General retiree

Funeral for Clovis I. Sandlin, 64, of Decatur will be Saturday at noon at Ridout's Brown-Service Funeral Home with the Rev. Todd Evans officiating.

Burial will be in Raper Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at the funeral home.

Mrs. Sandlin died Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2000, at Decatur General Hospital. She was born June 3, 1935, in Decatur, to Irvin and Ruby Russell.

She was retired from Decatur General with 20 years service as a central service technician and was a member of Parkview Baptist Church. She was the sister of the late Tennis Russell and mother of the late Jacqueline Hargrove.

She is survived by three sons, Joel Sandlin and Michael Sandlin, both of Decatur, and Mark Sandlin of Hartselle; three brothers, Autry Russell, Malcolm Russell and Greg Russell, all of Decatur; two sisters, Mary Clanton of Niles, Mich., and Margaret Newsom of Decatur; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Grandsons and nephews will be pallbearers.

Memorials may be made to Decatur General Hospital Foundation.

J.W. Sanford
66, retired

Funeral for J.W. Sanford, 66, of Trinity will be today at 3:30 p.m. at Roselawn Funeral Home with the Rev. Alan Queen officiating.

Burial will be in Roselawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at the funeral home.

Mr. Sanford died Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2000, at Parkway Medical Center. He was born Aug. 13, 1933, in Lawrence County to Pola and Annie Sanford. He was retired from Bamsi Contractors at Redstone Arsenal and was a member of Bellview Baptist Church and H&H Hunting Club. He was the brother of the late Otis Sanford.

He is survived by his wife, Josephine Sanford; his mother, Annie Radford of Decatur; and one sister, Marcel Roper of Nashville.

The Rev. Matt Scruggs Sr.
81, pastor

Funeral for the Rev. Matt Scruggs Sr., 82, of Town Creek, will be Saturday at noon at Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. James Miller officiating.

Burial will be in Mount Zion Cemetery with Reynolds Funeral Home directing. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 7 at the funeral home. The body also will be in the church one hour before the funeral.

Mr. Scruggs died Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2000, at Helen Keller Hospital. He was born June 3, 1918, in Lawrence County, to Nelson Scruggs and Betty Dobbins Scruggs. He was a pastor having served at Good Springs Primitive Baptist Church in Elgin, Mount Olive Baptist Church in Rogersville and Center Star Baptist Church in Killen. He was a member of Little Star Presbyterian Church and Masonic Lodge No. 434 of Town Creek.

He is survived by seven sons, Calven Scruggs of Decatur, Matt Scruggs Jr. of Arkansas, Robert Scruggs of Tuscumbia, Lt. Col. Samuel Scruggs of Korea, David Scruggs of Nashville, Obadiah Scruggs of Florence and George Scruggs of Atlanta; four daughters, Ruth King and Josephine Rollins, both of Bessemer, Lila Dickerson of Weaver and Ester Patterson of Decatur; 35 grandchildren; and 28 great-grandchildren.

Masonic brothers will be pallbearers.

Mary Elizabeth Turner

ATHENS -- Funeral for Mary Elizabeth Turner, 82, of Athens will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at McConnell Funeral Home.

Burial will be in Ripley Cemetery. The family will receive friends Saturday from 6 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mrs. Turner died Thursday, Feb. 10, 2000, at her home. Other arrangements will be announced by the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to Riddles Chapel Methodist Church Building Fund or Hospice of Limestone County.

Robert Lee Webster
93, retired insurance salesman and farmer

HARTSELLE -- Funeral for Robert Lee Webster, 93, of Athens will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Peck Funeral Home with the Rev. Travis Voss officiating.

The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 9 at the funeral home. Burial will be in Center Springs Cemetery.

Mr. Webster died Thursday, Feb. 10, 2000, at Decatur General Hospital. He was born Sept. 16, 1906 in Morgan County to Robert Price and Ada Blankenship Webster. He was a retired insurance salesman and farmer and a member of New Hope Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Sarah Verdie McGee Webster; two sons, Lee O. Webster of Madison and Rolland Webster of Athens; one daughter, Yvonne Monk of Athens; one brother, Cecil Webster of Childersburg; two sisters, Verdie Houser and Ruby Lang Bedingfield, both of Sylacauga; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the Center Springs United Methodist Church Cemetery Fund.

Pallbearers will be Keith Monk, Jason Thacker, Billy Webster, Eric Webster, Mark Webster, Alex Webster and Cameron Webster.

Jacqueline Hargrove

Mrs. Hargrove died Thursday, Feb. 10, 2000, at her home. She was born Oct. 16, 1957, to Joel T. and Clovis I. Russell Sandlin.

She is survived by one son, David Hargrove of Decatur; and three brothers, Joel Sandlin and Michael Sandlin, both of Decatur, and Mark Sandlin of Hartselle.

Welborn LaRoy 'Chip' Matthews Jr.
49, Danville, Calhoun teacher

HARTSELLE -- Funeral for Welborn LaRoy "Chip" Matthews Jr., 49, of Danville will be Sunday at 3 p.m. at Peck Funeral Home with the Rev. Jack Bailey and the Rev. Dan Compton officiating.

Burial will be in Friendship Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 9 at the funeral home.

Mr. Matthews died Friday, Feb. 11, 2000, at his home. He was born Oct. 5, 1950, in Fort Payne. He was a teacher at Danville High School and an adjunct instructor at Calhoun Community College. He served as attorney for United American Autoworkers and was in private law practice in Decatur. He was a member of the Alabama Bar Association and Alabama Education Association. He was a Sunday school teacher and member at Danville Baptist Church. He graduated from Eisenhower High School in Oklahoma, Auburn University with a bachelor's degree in business administration, Athens State University with a bachelor's in education and Cumberland School of Law with a doctorate in jurisprudence. He was a member of Sigma Chi fraternity.

He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Fitzgerald Matthews; two daughters, Carrie Elizabeth Matthews and Katie Ann Matthews, both of Danville; his parents, retired Lt. Col. Welborn LaRoy and LaJean Hammond Matthews of Valley Head; and one sister, Leslie Matthews Bunch of Valley Head.

Pallbearers will be Ken Hammond, Jimmy Morgan, David Morgan, Jim Curlee, John McCaleb and Pat Tate.
