Funeral for Roselyn Deneane Clay, 16, of Courtland will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Living Way Apostolic Church with the Rev. Ernest Clay officiating.

Burial will be in Willingham Cemetery with Reynolds Funeral Home directing. The body will be at the church one hour before the service.

Miss Clay died Tuesday, Sept. 12, 2000, at her home. She was born Jan. 2, 1984, in Lawrence County to the Rev. Ernest Clay and Gladiolus Lightfoot Clay. She was a junior at Courtland High School and a member of Living Way Apostolic Church, where she was an usher and a choir member.

Survivors include her parents of Courtland; one brother, Ernest Clay II of Courtland; and one sister, Aletha Natasha Clay of Courtland.

Classmates will be pallbearers.

Joe Jackson Cooper
66, retired farmer

TRINITY -- Funeral for Joe Jackson Cooper, 66, of Courtland will be Friday at 1 p.m. at Highway 36 Holy Church of Christ with the Rev. Carol Hall and the Rev. Harold Hall officiating.

Burial will be in Red Hill Cemetery with Parkway Funeral Home directing. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 9 at the funeral home.

Mr. Cooper died Wednesday, Sept. 13, 2000, at Decatur General Hospital. He was born April 27, 1934, in Lawrence County to Monroe Jackson Cooper and Clara Edna Owens Cooper. He was a retired farmer and attended Highway 36 Holy Church of Christ.

Survivors include his wife, Deborah Kay Cooper; seven sons, Billy Joe Cooper of Blanche, Tenn., Jackson D. Cooper of Greenville, Larry M. Cooper of Trinity, David W. Cooper of Bay Minette, Joe J. Cooper and Benjamin D. Cooper, both of Leighton, and Thomas J. Cooper of Courtland; 11 daughters, Debra C. Tanksley of Decatur, Linda S. Johnson of Trinity, Evaleen M. Morgan of Hartselle, Lisa A. Cooper of Orlando, Fla., Island Marie Cooper of Talladega, Becky Jo Allen of Town Creek, Melissa D. Mears and Clara Cooper, both of Moulton, and Myrtis E. West, Bobbie Jo Ryals and Theresa D. Pearson, all of Bay Minette; 32 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Sons will be pallbearers.

Marie Perkins Essary
67, former seamstress

HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- Funeral for Marie Perkins Essary, 67, of Decatur, formerly of Brooklyn, Miss., was to be today at 2 p.m. at Hulett-Winstead Funeral Home with the Rev. W.P. Cessna officiating.

Burial was to be in Brooklyn Cemetery.

Mrs. Essary died Tuesday, Sept. 12, 2000, at South Morgan Health Care Center in Decatur. She was born Sept. 27, 1932, in Forrest County, Miss., to William A. Perkins and Edna Mae Anderson Perkins. She was a former seamstress at Big Yank Corp.

She is survived by one son, Rick L. Payne of Moulton; one brother, Sam Perkins of Hattiesburg; three sisters, Betty Davis of Ponchatoula, La., Christine Walker of Maxie, Miss., and Mary Lott of Friendswood, Texas; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Inez 'Cricket' Hendrix
86, Parkway Medical retiree

Funeral for Inez "Cricket" Hendrix, 86, of Decatur will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Roselawn Funeral Home with the Rev. Carl Maynard officiating.

Burial will be in Rice Cemetery in Marshall County. The family will receive tonight from 6 to 8 at the funeral home.

Mrs. Hendrix died Wednesday, Sept. 13, 2000, at Parkway Medical Center. She was born Dec. 29, 1913, in Augusta, Ga. She was a member of Oak Park Church of God. A retiree of Parkway Medical Center Medical Records Department, she was a Red Cross volunteer and an avid Atlanta Braves fan.

She is survived by her husband, Thomas "Shorty" Hendrix; and one daughter, Ann Hendrix Oppenheim of Los Angeles.

Robert Sam Polk
89, retired custodian

Funeral for Robert Sam Polk, 89, of Decatur will be Friday at noon at St. Peter's Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Frank Franklin officiating.

Burial will be in Chestnut Grove Cemetery with Reynolds Funeral Home directing. The body will be at the church one hour before the service.

Mr. Polk died Sunday, Sept. 10, 2000, at Parkway Medical Center. He was born March 18, 1911, in Morgan County to Lewis Polk and Della Polk. He was a member of St. Peter's Missionary Baptist Church, where he served on the deacon board. He was a retired custodian from Decatur High School.

Survivors include one daughter, Florzell Mathews of Chicago; seven grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Curtis Fletcher, Willie Key, Lee Barker, James Moore and Richard Rather.

Evelyn Wilkins Raybon
80, retired cashier clerk

Funeral for Evelyn Wilkins Raybon, 80, of Decatur will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at First Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Herbert Cartwright Jr. officiating.

Burial will be in Sykes Cemetery with Reynolds Funeral Home directing. The family will receive friends Friday night from 6 to 7 at the funeral home. The body will be at the church one hour before the service.

Mrs. Raybon died Monday, Sept. 11, 2000, at Parkway Medical Center. She was born Oct. 10, 1919, in Memphis. A retired cashier clerk for the Decatur Housing Authority, she was a member of First Missionary Baptist Church, where she served in the Group Eight Club, Missionary Society and Mothers Board. She was a foster grandparent at Benjamin Davis Elementary School and the Decatur Boys and Girls Club.

Survivors include three sons, William Raybon of Louisville, Ky., Wilkins Raybon of Oxford, Miss., and Leonard Raybon of Decatur; one daughter, Sametta Brown of New Orleans; one brother, Melvin Shabazz of Cincinnati, 11 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Deacons of the church will be pallbearers.

Daisy L. Ryan
89, Decatur General retiree

Funeral for Daisy L. Ryan, 89, of Decatur will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Ridout's Brown-Service Funeral Home with Charles Stidham and Chris Pressnell officiating.

Burial will be in Roselawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at the funeral home.

Mrs. Ryan died Wednesday, Sept. 13, 2000, at Parkway Medical Center. She was born July 23, 1911, in Morgan County to George Palmer and Mary Palmer. She worked for Cooper Wells Hosiery Mill and was retired from Decatur General Hospital, where she worked as an assistant supervisor in Central Supply. She was a member of Flint Church of Christ. She was the widow of William Cecil Ryan and the mother of the late Betty Jean Bogle.

Survivors include one son, Billy J. Ryan of Albany, Ga.; 10 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Grandsons will be pallbearers.

Claudia S. Spence
89, retired accounting, payroll clerk

Graveside service for Claudia S. Spence, 89, of Hartselle will be Friday at 2 p.m. at Roselawn Cemetery with Mike King officiating and Ridout's Brown-Service Funeral Home directing.

The family will receive friends Friday from noon to 2 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mrs. Spence died Wednesday, Sept. 13, 2000, at Hartselle Medical Center. She was born March 5, 1912, in Tennessee. She was an accounting and payroll clerk for Redstone Arsenal until retiring at age 80. She was the widow of Frank Spence.

She is survived by two brothers, Paul Stewart of Peoria, Ill., and Wade Stewart of Elkmont; two sisters, Myrtice Tedford of Hartselle and Reba Siler of Tecumseh, Mich.; one grandchild; and two great-grandchildren.

S.T. Wade

HARTSELLE -- Funeral for S.T. Wade, 73, of Somerville, who died today, Sept. 14, 2000, at Parkway Medical Center, will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Peck Funeral Home.

Burial will be in Hartselle City Cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday night from 6 to 9 at the funeral home.

Further arrangements will be announced by the funeral home.

Guenther Ziaja
65, retired welder

HARTSELLE -- Funeral for Guenther Ziaja, 65, of Falkville will be Friday at 1 p.m. at Peck Funeral Home with the Rev. Harold Thompson officiating.

Burial will be in Cook Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 9 at the funeral home.

Mr. Ziaja died Wednesday, Sept. 13, 2000, at his home. He was born Oct. 22, 1934, in Germany to Maria Ziaja. He was a member of Gandy's Cove Community Watch and a retired maintenance welder at Monsanto.

Survivors include his wife, Berta Sue Ziaja of Falkville; one son, Steven Ziaja of Falkville; and one daughter, Sherry Scogin of Falkville.

Cleta Stiers Baker
83, homemaker
Cleta Stiers Baker, 83, of Decatur died today, Sept. 15, 2000, at her home.

Roselawn Funeral Home is directing arrangements. Burial will be in Carl Junction Cemetery.

Mrs. Baker was born Oct. 2, 1916, in Joplin, Mo., to Anson Stiers and Myrtle Stiers. She was a homemaker and the widow of Ernest L. Baker.

Survivors include one son, Gary S. Baker of Decatur; one sister, Margaret Morrison of Cape Canaveral, Fla.; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

James John Meredith
78, retired grocery stocker and WWII Army veteran

ATHENS -- Funeral for James John Meredith, 78, of Athens will be Saturday at 3 p.m. at Limestone Chapel Funeral Home with the Rev. Randy Carter officiating.

Burial will be in Sunnyhill Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mr. Meredith died Wednesday, Sept. 13, 2000, at Huntsville Hospital. He was born May 22, 1922, in Limestone County. He was an Army veteran of World War II where he received two Purple Hearts and a Bronze Star. He was a retired grocery stocker for L & S Foodland in Athens. He was a member of the Poplar Creek Baptist Church and Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Survivors include his wife, Elar Meredith; one son, Jimmy Meredith Sr. of Athens; one sister, Pauline Tucker of Tanner; and two grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Jimmy Meredith Jr., Steve Knox, Jarron "Tooter" Meredith, Shawn Cooley, Shannon Cooley and Heath Tucker.

D.C. Newell
55, former inspector

HAZEL GREEN -- Funeral for D.C. Newell, 55, of Athens will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Gallant Funeral Home with the Rev. Roger Woodard officiating.

Burial will be in Concord Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 5 to 9 at the funeral home.

Mr. Newell died Wednesday, Sept. 13, 2000, at Athens-Limestone Hospital. He was born in Colbert County to the Rev. Monroe Newell and Jesse Mae Hill Newell. He was a former inspector at Steelcase.

Survivors include his wife, Bobbie Newell; one son, Daniel Newell of Elkmont; one daughter, Nikki Newell of Elkmont; four brothers, Virgil Newell of Colbert Heights, Brock Newell of Enterprise, Gary Newell of Westville, Fla., and Conny Newell of Gadsden; one sister, Janice Mock of Mobile; and four grandchildren.

S.T. Wade
73, homemaker

HARTSELLE -- Funeral for S.T. Wade, 73, of Somerville will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Peck Funeral Home with the Rev. Janice Hill and the Rev. John Walker officiating.

Burial will be in Hartselle City Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 9 at the funeral home.

Mrs. Wade died Thursday, Sept. 14, 2000, at Parkway Medical Center. She was born Feb. 13, 1927, in Lawrence County to Elmer Goree and Leona M. Lynn Goree. She was a member of the Eastern Star and Somerville United Methodist Church.

Survivors include her husband, James Valter Wade; three sons, William A. "Billy" Wade, Lloyd G. Wade and Mitchell R. "Mickey" Smith, all of Somerville; two brothers, Odell Goree of Somerville and Loyd "Junior" Goree of Athens; three sisters, Lola Goree Mooneyham and Movaline Goree Smith, both of Somerville, and Eula Goree Speed of Decatur; and five grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Barry Goree, Lynn Goree, Jack Mooneyham, John Mooneyham, Brandon Smith and Roger Smith.

Memorials may be made to Somerville United Methodist Church for the perpetual care of the Jon Wade Memorial Playground, P.O. Box 68, Somerville, AL 35670.
