Mr. Bates died Friday, Oct. 20, 2000, at Decatur General Hospital. He was born June 18, 1918, in Limestone County to Erskine Bates and Emily Viola Usery Bates. He was a member of Elkmont Church of Christ and retired after 33 years as a control room operator at Monsanto, now Solutia Inc. He was the brother of the late Willis Bates and Walter Bates.
Survivors include his wife, Lela May Bates; one son, Mickey Bates of Elkmont; one brother, Alvin Bates of Elkmont; one sister, Louise Daly of Veto; two granddaughters; and one great-granddaughter.
Nephews will be pallbearers.
Bertha Lee Hansand

Mrs. Hansand died Tuesday, Oct. 17, 2000, at Parkway Medical Center. She was born June 16, 1904, in Mooresville to Edward Wilburn and Millie Ann Moore Wilburn. She was a homemaker. She was the widow of John Hansand.
Survivors include nephews and nieces, including Pearlie Mae Watkins of Decatur.

Mrs. Staggs died Friday, Oct. 20, 2000, at Shoals Hospital in Muscle Shoals. She was born Aug. 14, 1924, in Lawrence County to Walter Clayton and Manila Campbell Clayton. She was a homemaker and a member of Abbie Baptist Church of Leighton. She was the widow of William Staggs and the mother of the late Dorothy Staggs.
Survivors include three daughters, Mattie Grissom of Decatur, Barbara Stewart of Hillsboro and Darlene Dutton of Town Creek; two brothers, Gene Clayton of Addison and Russell Clayton of Florence; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Burial was to be in Holly Pond Cemetery with Moss Service Funeral Home directing.
Mrs. Caufield died Saturday, Oct. 21, 2000, at her home. She was born Oct. 19, 1931, in East Point to Charles and Jennie Esther Reece Woods. She spent more than 36 years as a United Methodist missionary in Bolivia, South America. She taught Sunday school class and played the organ at the Holly Pond United Methodist Church.
Survivors include her husband, Robert "Bob" Caufield; one son, Stephen L. Caufield of Decatur; three daughters, Phyllis Owens of New Jersey, Susy Carman of Palo Alto, Calif., and Jennine Zumbuhl of Virginia Beach, Va.; one brother, Charles Reece Woods of Albertville; and nine grandchildren.

Raymond C. 'Slick' McAbee

Burial was to be in Hopewell Cemetery.
Mr. McAbee died Saturday, Oct. 21, 2000, at Brookwood Medical Center in Birmingham. He was born Aug. 6, 1921, in Morgan County to Joe Miles McAbee and Francis Burns McAbee. He attended Oak Ridge Baptist Church and retired as a draw bench operator for Wolverine Tube Inc. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a member of the Disabled American Veterans.
Survivors include his wife, Revean McAbee; two sons, Tony McAbee and Gerald McAbee, both of Hartselle; two daughters, Vickie Lewis and Renae Mayfield, both of Hartselle; one sister, Selma "Tut" McCaghren of Nell; and eight grandchildren.
Pallbearers were to be Jerry Reynolds, Tracy McAbee, Jeremy McAbee, Jimmy McAbee, Daniel Moore and Don Layton.

Mrs. McCarley died Sunday, Oct. 22, 2000, at Hartselle Medical Center. She was born Jan. 7, 1910, in Morgan County. She retired as a dietitian from the McMinnville school system and was a member of Westside Community Church in Hartselle.
Survivors include her husband, Otto Willis McCarley; one son, Roy Mabe of McMinnville, Tenn.; one stepdaughter, Mary McCarley of Decatur; one sister, Zella Winton of Somerville; and four grandchildren.

Mr. Roper died Sunday, Oct. 22, 2000, at Decatur General Hospital. He was born March 15, 1938, in Morgan County. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and a member of Sixth Avenue Church of God.
Survivors include one son, James Thorne of Athens; two sisters, Eva Mae Shumake of Mississippi and Beatrice Roper of Tennessee; and four grandchildren.

Mr. Brown died Monday, Oct. 23, 2000, at his home. He was born July 1, 1937, in Hardin County, Tenn., to Lucas A. Brown and Bessie Virginia Crotts Brown. He lived in Florence for more than 40 years and was a resident of Decatur for the last three years. He was the brother of the late Edith Howard, Johnnie Mae Franks, Geraldine Brewington and Bobby Brown. He was retired from Reynolds Aluminum Co., as a dolly operator after 36 years. He was a member of St. John United Methodist Church of Florence.
Survivors include his wife, Alta Brown; two sons, Tim Brown of Lexington, and Randy Brown of Huntsville; one daughter, Janet Self of Tuscumbia; one sister, Peggy Brewer of Huntsville; two brothers, O.C. Brown of Cookville, Tenn., and Tommy Jack Brown of Florence; and eight grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Morris Glover, Larry Collum, Billy Ray Franks, Ted Buttram, Don Montgomery, and Howard Drake.

She was a member of Ebenezer Christian Church, where she served on the Mother's Board and in the Order of the Eastern Star, Corinda Chapter No. 97. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include four sons, James H. Elliott of Cleveland, and Thomas Elliott and Joe Lewis, both of Decatur, and John H. Lewis of Harvest; three daughters, Anna E. Story and Juanita Turner, both of Cleveland, and Josephine Curry of Madison; 39 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

She was a homemaker and a member of Fairview Baptist Church. She was the widow of Ruben Patterson and the mother of the late William Edgar Nunley.

Mrs. Savage died Saturday, Oct. 21, 2000, at Helen Keller Memorial Hospital. She was born March 9, 1910, in Lawrence County to George Campbell and Susie Campbell. She was a lifelong resident of Lawrence County. She confessed Christ at an early age and joined Bethel Colbert Missionary Baptist Church. She was the widow of Tom Savage and the mother of the late Lester "L.C." Hood.
Survivors include three daughters, Marlene Turner and Callie Wilson, both of Town Creek, and Sadie Lynch of Leighton; one stepson, James Savage of Muscle Shoals; two brothers, Pharo Campbell of Town Creek and Clarence Campbell of Nashville; two sisters, Virginia Foster of Omaha, Neb., and Dorothy Simmons of Paducah, Ky.; and 24 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.
