Gilbert E. Smith
77, furnace operator

MOULTON -- Funeral for Gilbert E. Smith, 77, of Mount Hope will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Rock Springs Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Rick Elrod, the Rev. Brian Hall and the Rev. Tim Keenum officiating.

Burial will be in Mount Hope United Methodist Cemetery with Lawrence Funeral Home directing. The family will receive friends today from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mr. Smith died Tuesday, Nov. 7, 2000, at Decatur General Hospital. He was born Oct. 13, 1923, in Alabama to Floyd Smith and Jessie Mitchell Smith. He was a furnace operator for Ford Motor Company in Sheffield. He was a member and an elder of Rock Springs Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include his wife, Jean Smith; two sons, Jimmy Smith and DeWayne Smith, both of Mount Hope; two daughters, Pam Campbell and Angie Smith, both of Mount Hope; two sisters, Jean Wells of Spruce Pine and Jewell Henson of Pleasant Grove; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Chris Smith, Brian Campbell, Bobby Campbell, Brett Daniel, Darrell Quails and Brad Lamon.

Memorials may be made to Rock Springs Presbyterian Church in Mount Hope.

Lois Mason Swoope
72, retired office manager

Funeral for Lois Mason Swoope, 72, of Decatur will be Thursday at noon at First Missionary Baptist Church of Hillsboro with the Rev. Tim Swoope officiating.

Burial will be in Decatur City Cemetery with Reynolds Funeral Home directing. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 7 at the funeral home. The body will be at the church one hour before the service.

Mrs. Swoope died Saturday, Nov. 4, 2000, at Huntsville Hospital. She was born Feb. 5, 1928, in Lawrence County to Theodore Mason and Jessie Davis Mason. She was retired as office manager of Decatur Housing Authority and was a former teacher's aide in the Decatur City School system. She also worked with the Foster Grandparents program at the Sixth Street Boys and Girls Club.

The widow of the Rev. Willie J. Swoope, she was a member of First Missionary Baptist Church where she served on the Mother's Board, in the Missionary Society and was church musician. She also directed and was the musician at David Temple Church, Bell Primitive Baptist Church, Spring Hill Baptist Church and Westside Baptist Church.

Survivors include three sons, Frank Swoope of Huntsville, Willie Swoope of Boynton Beach, Fla., and Kenneth Swoope of Decatur; one brother, Moses Mason of Pulaski, Tenn.; one sister, Mollie Sue Thompkins of Decatur; six grandchildren; and one great-grandaughter.

Pallbearers will be Connell Campbell, Sevon Gilbert, George Wheeler, James Bowman, Marcus Mason, and Steven Simpson.

Gene Autry Terry
59, café owner

MOULTON -- Funeral for Gene Autry Terry, 59, of Mount Hope will be Thursday at 2:30 p.m. at Lawrence Funeral Home with the Rev. Alan Compton officiating.

Burial will be in Symrna Cemetery in Moulton. The family will receive friends today from 6 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mr. Terry died Sunday, Nov. 5, 2000, at his residence. He was born March 22, 1941, in Lawrence County to Claudie Terry and Louise Terry. He was the owner of the Blue Goose Café.

Survivors include his wife, Pamela Gail Terry; two sons, Rickey Terry of Town Creek and Mike Terry of Caddo; three daughters, Rita Faye Terry of Town Creek, Amy Terry King of Mount Hope and Elizabeth Cheri Terry of Mount Hope; one brother, J.C. Terry, of Cherokee; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Pallbearers will be Kevin Martin, Ardell Abbott, Lloyd Abbott, Thomas King, Jermanie Borden, Ricky Roden, Aubry Lee Atwood and Elmer T. Hovater.

Shelby Jean Wales
64, homemaker

ATHENS -- Funeral for Shelby Jean Wales, 64, of Elkmont, was to be today at 2 p.m. at Spry Funeral Home with Toney Wales officiating.

Burial will be in Pettusville Cemetery.

Mrs. Wales died Monday, Nov. 6, 2000, at Athens-Limestone Hospital. She was born Oct. 15, 1936, in Limestone County. She was a homemaker and a member of the New Bethel Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband, Raymond Wales Jr.; one son, Toney Wales of Elkmont; three sisters, Maxie Hargrove of Athens, Geneva Whitt and Connie Franks, both of Leesburg, Fla.; and two granddaughters.

Pallbearers will be Dalton Scott, Leon Nave, Keith Clem, Dwight Clem, Bradley Wales, Ed Wales, Ruddie Putman and Wayne Simpkins.

Thelma Montgomery Williams
89, retired cafeteria worker

BIRMINGHAM -- Funeral for Thelma Montgomery Williams, 89, of Pinson will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Ridout's Roebuck Chapel.

Burial will be in Marvin's Chapel Cemetery in Pinson. The family will receive friends tonight from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mrs. Williams died Monday, Nov. 6, 2000. She was born May 6, 1911, in Jefferson County. She was a retired cafeteria worker at Pinson Elementary School. She was a 10-year resident of Wesley Acres Retirement Home and a member of the Pinson Presbyterian Church. She was the widow of the late Porter O. Williams and the grandmother of the late Janet K. Williams.

Survivors include two sons, Troy O. Williams of Hillsboro and Raymond L. Williams of West Monroe, La.; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Velma Anna Bates
89, retired Athens High School cafeteria worker and homemaker

ATHENS -- Funeral for Velma Anna Bates, 89, of Athens will be Friday at 11 a.m. at McConnell Funeral Home with the Rev. James Adams officiating.

Burial will be in Roselawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8.

Mrs. Bates died Wednesday, Nov. 8, 2000, at Athens-Limestone Hospital. She was born Oct. 27, 1911, in Limestone County. She was a retired cafeteria worker at Athens High School and homemaker. She was a member of West Highland Baptist Church and the Alabama Retired Employees Association. She was the widow of the late Raymond Bates.

Survivors include one son, Gerald Bates of Athens; one brother, Lewis Downs of Athens; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Steve Downs, Joel Downs, Bobby Wigginton, Larry Wigginton, Kevin Daws, Ken Bates and Jimmy Smith.

Edith B. Robinson
84, homemaker

Funeral for Edith B. Robinson, 84, of Trinity will be Friday at 2 p.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church with the Rev. Neal Culberson and the Rev. John Clotfelter officiating.

Burial will be in Roselawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at Rideout's Brown-Service Funeral Home.

Mrs. Robinson died Tuesday, Nov. 7, 2000, at Decatur General Hospital. She was born July 1, 1916, in Morgan County to Burrel Braswell and Mattie Lou Braswell. She was a homemaker and a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday school for 20 years.

Survivors include her husband, John Wesley Robinson Jr.; two sons, John David Robinson of Trinity and Donald J. Robinson of Keller, Texas; one brother, Boyd Braswell of Decatur; three sisters, Heddy Thompson, Marie Ratliff and Betty Jane Lane, all of Hartselle; and five grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Wesley Robinson, David Robinson, Michael Robinson, Bradley Hilliker, Ricky Thompson and Mickey Thompson.

The family will accept flowers, or donations may be made to Trinity United Methodist Church.

Mamie Estelle Smith
84, homemaker

ATHENS -- Funeral for Mamie Estelle Smith, 84, of Lester will be Friday at 1 p.m. at Spry Funeral Home with the Rev. Ray Blankenship officiating.

Burial will be in New Salem Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 9 at the funeral home.

Mrs. Smith died Wednesday, Nov. 8, 2000, at Athens-Limestone Hospital. She was born July 9, 1916, in Limestone County. She was a homemaker and a member of Salem United Methodist Church. She was the widow of Leonard Washington Smith and the mother of the late Larry A. Smith.

Survivors include four sons, Wayne Smith of Lester, Thomas Estel Smith of Goodsprings, Tenn., Jerry Douglas Smith and Donald Smith, both of Lester; two daughters, Joyce Mize of Pulaski, Tenn. and Beverly Baker of Lester; two brothers, Robert Wise and Lester Wise, both of Lester; fourteen grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Grandsons will be pallbearers.

Barnett 'Barney' Dale Teal
67, retired truck driver

ALBERTVILLE -- Funeral for Barnett "Barney" Dale Teal, 67, of Hartselle, formerly of Albertville, will be Friday at 2 p.m. at Albertville Funeral Home with the Rev. A.L. Street officiating.

Burial will be in New Canaan Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 9 at the funeral home.

Mr. Teal died Wednesday, Nov. 8, 2000, at Veterans Hospital in Birmingham. He was born July 9, 1933, in Marshall County to Almon Burley Teal and Willie Mae Clines Teal. He was a retired truck driver.

Survivors include his wife, Regina Teal; two daughters, Cheryl Fulkerson of Montana and Diane Fulmer of Hartselle; and four grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Ladon Hilley, Rodney Clines, Edwin Lawrence, David Phillips, Jeff Hatfield and Zack Hatfield.

Jack W. Thornton
67, Doyle Supply salesman

Funeral for Jack. W. Thornton, 67, of Decatur will be Friday at 1 p.m. at Roselawn Funeral Home with the Rev. Sherry Harris officiating.

Burial will be in Roselawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at the funeral home.

Mr. Thornton died Wednesday, Nov. 8, 2000, at Decatur General Hospital. He was born Oct. 20, 1933, in Lauderdale County, to J.F. Thornton and Irene Campbell Thornton. A member of Lexington United Methodist Church, he was a veteran in the U.S. Army and retired from Doyle Supply Co. as a salesman.

Survivors include his wife, Myra Thornton, and one brother, Charles P. Thornton of Florence.

Pallbearers will be Todd Mays, Greg Thornton, Chris Mays, Scott Stanoelevich, Marty Robertson and Mike Stanoelevich.

Beatrice Ledbetter Hazle
82, homemaker
TRINITY - Funeral for Beatrice Ledbetter Hazle, 82, of Moulton will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Parkway Funeral Home with the Rev. Keith Jones and the Rev. Robert Cordova officiating.

Burial will be in Corinth Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 9 at the funeral home.

Mrs. Hazle died Thursday, Nov. 9, 2000, at Lawrence Baptist Medical Center. She was born November 27, 1917. She was a homemaker and a member of Corinth Baptist Church.

Survivors include three sons, David Harmon Hazle of Courtland, Donald Clayton Hazle of Danville and James Lamar Hazle of Moulton; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Gil Jaggers, Jerome Jaggers, Tad Hazle, David Hazle, Yon Speegle and Harold Hazle.

Gurvis Edward Lawrence
78, Goodyear retiree

HARTSELLE -- Funeral for Gurvis Edward Lawrence, 78, of Somerville will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Peck Funeral Home with the Rev. Randall Patton officiating.

Burial will be in Red Oak Grove Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 9 at the funeral home.

Mr. Lawrence died Thursday, Nov. 9, 2000, at Huntsville Hospital. He was born April 16, 1922, in Morgan County to Varnie Olton Lawrence and Belle Seymour Lawrence. He was an Army veteran of World War II and retired from Goodyear in Decatur after 39 years of service. He was a member of the Community Baptist Church in Cotaco.

Survivors include his wife off 55 years, Sue Lawrence; two sons, Phillip Lawrence and Roger Lawrence, both of Cotaco; one daughter, Pamela Lawrence Patton of Cordele, Ga.; three sisters, Hazel Lawrence Goode of Athens, Flora Lawrence Woolsey of Ogden, Utah, and Iris Lawrence Lemmond of Somerville; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
