Mr. Broad died Monday, Dec. 11, 2000, at Decatur General Hospital. He was born May 17, 1959, in Chicago.
Survivors include his mother, Mary S. Broad of Decatur; and one sister, Susan Broad of Raleigh, N.C.
Noel Carpenter
82, retired command pilot
AUSTIN, Texas -- Graveside military service for retired Lt. Col. Noel Carpenter, 82, of Austin will be Thursday at 1:45 p.m. at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio with Cook-Walden Chapel of the Hills Funeral Home directing.
Mr. Carpenter died Friday, Dec. 8, 2000, in Austin. He was born Nov. 21, 1918, in Birmingham to Harry Carpenter and Florence Stabler Carpenter. He grew up in Decatur and later attended Sewanee University of the South. He received degrees in business administration from The University of Alabama and the University of North Carolina. He was commissioned in the U.S. Army Air Corps at Ellington Field in 1942 after graduating from flight school.
Mr. Carpenter served 28 years in the U.S. Air Force and retired as a lieutenant colonel and command pilot in 1968. He then worked 15 years at the Texas Health Department in Austin as a systems analyst; he retired in June 1984. During his retirement, he researched and wrote a manuscript on John Bell Hood's Civil War Tennessee campaign.
Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Betty Carpenter; one daughter, Carol Powell of Austin; and one granddaughter.
Mary Ruth Coultas

NASHVILLE -- Mary Ruth Coultas, 68, of Athens died Saturday, Dec. 9, 2000, at Hillside Hospital in Pulaski, Tenn.
Her body was donated to The University of Alabama at Birmingham Medical Center. The family will receive friends Saturday at Robert and Pam Chandler's home in Nashville.
Mrs. Coultas was born Aug. 3, 1932, in Izard County, Ark., to James Rose and Audrey Cook Rose. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include her husband of 48 years, William C. "Bill" Coultas; three daughters, Pam Chandler of Nashville, Roseanne Crovo of Birmingham and Tina Watson of Goodspring, Tenn.; one brother, Lloyd Rose of Benton, La.; one sister, Virginia Finley of Traskwood, Ark.; her mother of Melbourne, Ark.; and seven grandchildren.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- Funeral arrangements for Marilyn Bentley Griffin Dobson, 61, of Anchorage, who died Monday, Dec. 11, 2000, at her home, will be announced by Evergreen Memorial Chapel.
Mrs. Dobson was born March 22, 1939, in Hartselle to Buford J. Bentley and Donna Mae Bentley. She graduated from Morgan County High School in 1957, Athens State College in 1976 and The University of Alabama in Huntsville in 1978 with a degree in nursing. She moved to Wyoming in 1978 and then to Alaska and pursued a career in nursing, working as a medical evacuation flight nurse for 20 years in remote Alaska areas.
Survivors include her husband, Michael Dobson; one son, Brian Griffin of Trinity; one daughter, Erin Griffin of Homer, Alaska; her mother of Hartselle; one brother, Gary Bentley of Collierville, Tenn.; and two grandchildren.

Mrs. Henson died Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2000, at Decatur General Hospital. She was born March 13, 1903, in Wigham, Ga., to Henry Ervin Gainous and Annie Boyette Gainous. She was a homemaker and a member of Central United Methodist Church for 50 years and Mizpah Chapter 19 of the Eastern Star. She was mother of the late Brunelle Dees and Howard Vincent Dees.
Survivors include one daughter, Ilene King of Decatur; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Donald Branum, Michael Tidwell, Walter Spears, Edwin Davidson Jr., John Eyster, John Cook, Scot Brothers and Jim Mynes.

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. -- Memorial service for Jan Currie Huyck, 50, of Traverse City was Monday at Rey- nolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home with the Rev. Jerry Micketti officiating.
Mrs. Huyck died Thursday, Dec. 7, 2000, at Bortz Health Care. She was born July 5, 1950, in Alma, Mich., to Leon Currie and Geraldine Rhynard Currie. She attended St. Mary's Catholic Elementary School and graduated from Alma High School in 1968. She studied at Patricia Stevens' Modeling School in Wisconsin before becoming a certified dental assistant. She moved with her family to Decatur from Frankenmuth, Mich., in 1977, when her husband was transferred by General Motors to the Delphi Saginaw Steering Systems plant. They lived in Decatur 11 years.
Survivors include her husband, Ronnie W. Huyck; one daughter, Corey Anne Huyck of Chicago; and two brothers, Greg Currie and Ryan Currie, both of Traverse City.

Mr. Kidwell died Sunday, Dec. 10, 2000, at Huntsville Hospital. He was born Jan. 29, 1944, in Hyattsville, Md., to Roger O. Kidwell and Katherine Kidwell. While in the U.S. Army, he was stationed at Redstone Arsenal. He retired as a print shop operator from Potomac Electric Power Co. after more than 35 years and moved to Alabama.
Survivors include his wife, Betty Ricks Kidwell; two sons, Roger Michael Kidwell of Glenn Burnie, Md., and Jeffrey Kidwell of Hillsboro; three daughters, Annette Lozuk of Allen, Texas, Marsha Bussey of Laurel, Md., and Kathlene Kidwell of Silver Spring, Md.; his parents of Hyattsville; one sister, Linda McCoy of Germantown, Md.; and three grandchildren.

Mr. Kimbril died Sunday, Dec. 10, 2000, at his home. He was born April 8, 1930, in Cullman County to James R. Kimbril and Beulah Jane Dale Kimbril. He retired as a welder from Lanson Industries and was the brother of the late Buford Kimbril.

Mr. Neely died Saturday, Dec. 9, 2000, at Huntsville Hospital. He was born June 13, 1969, in Limestone County. He was the son of the late Fred Ross. He attended East Limestone High School and was a brickmason.
Survivors include his mother and stepfather, Janice Neely Freeman and Jerry Neal Freeman of Athens; two brothers, Michael Ross Neely and Sydney Garth Neely, both of Athens; and his grandmother, Rena Norwood of Athens.

Burial will be in Athens City Cemetery with McConnell Funeral Home directing. The family will receive friends at the church two hours before the service.
Mrs. Newman died Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2000, at Athens-Limestone Hospital. She was born Aug. 28, 1907, in Enterprise to William Speigner and Willie Mae Bottoms Speigner. A resident of Limestone County for 55 years, she was a homemaker and a member of First Baptist Church, where she served as church historian, taught Sunday school and was a member of the Women's Missionary Union. She was a member of Daughters of the American Revolution, the Athens Historical Society and the Quest Club. She was one of the founders of the Donnell House Restoration Committee and was instrumental in its restoration. She was author of the history of Athens for the Sesquicentennial Celebration. She was selected as one of Alabama's gracious ladies. She was the widow of Julian Newman, who served as superintendent of the Athens City Schools for 25 years.
Survivors include one son, Julian Harris Newman of Athens; one daughter, Patricia Newman Hall of Athens; one brother, Ernest L. Speigner of Denver; one sister, Lucy Garner Luck of Enterprise; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Richard H. Hall, Thomas A. Gilbert, Thomas A. Gilbert Jr., Scott Newman Gilbert, Oscar G. Hale and Wilson Luck.

FLORENCE -- Memorial Mass for Cheri Chandler Shipper, 72, of Florence was to be said today at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church with the Rev. Msgr. Michael Sexton of Madison and the Rev. David Buchanan officiating.
Burial was to be in St. Michael's Cemetery in St. Florian with Elkins Funeral Home directing.
Mrs. Shipper died Sunday, Dec. 10, 2000, at her home. She was born Aug. 30, 1928, to Homer and Gladys Chandler of Decatur. She was a lifelong writer and journalist, beginning her career at 15 as a "cub" reporter for THE DECATUR DAILY. She graduated from high school at 16 and attended The University of Alabama, where she was the first female editor of the university newspaper, the Crimson and White, for two years. After graduation in 1949, she was one of 20 guest editors for Mademoiselle Magazine in New York. She then worked for the New Orleans Item and was mid-state reporter
for the Nashville Banner/Tennessean.
She and former husband Edward Shipper founded and published the Shoals Picture weekly newspaper in 1967, where she served as editor for eight years and wrote a weekly column, "The Viewfinder." After selling the Shoals Picture in 1978, she became Living Today editor for THE DAILY, a position she held for four years. She then returned to Florence, where she was employed for more than 12 years in the media relations office of TVA's Fertilizer Development Center.
After retiring from TVA in 1988, she began full-time freelance writing and public relations work and routinely published pieces in local and national publications including the Washington Post and Family Weekly. She was one of the first women in Alabama chosen for the Society of Professional Journalists. In 1990, she served for two years as president of the Alabama Women's Press Association and was a member of Sigma Delta Chi journalism honorary fraternity. She was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, where she served on the church governing board as communications director and Eucharistic minister. She was the sister of the late Marion Kinsolving and the grandmother of the late Maury Shipper Jr.
Survivors include two sons, Edward Shipper Jr. of Houston and Maury Shipper Sr. of Butler; three daughters, Stephanie Shipper of Raleigh-Durham, N.C., Paula Shipper of Denver and Suzanne Shipper Kushner of San Carlos, Calif.; one brother, William Chandler of Decatur; and 10 grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or St. Joseph's Catholic Church.

Mr. Ussery died Monday, Dec. 11, 2000, at his home. He was born May 9, 1932, in Elkmont to James Edward Ussery and Viola Pullum Ussery. He retired from the Army after 20 years and served in Vietnam.
Survivors include one daughter, Brenda Gale Holt of Athens; one brother, Vernon Usery of Elkmont; one sister, Allie Willis of Ardmore; and two grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Glen Usery, Dale Usery, Curtis Usery, Lawrence Holt, Shane Hudson and Carlos Shannon.
