Thomas Lawson "Sophie" Davidson
A man who worked to preserve the Decatur City Cemetery will be buried there this week among his former friends.
Thomas Lawson "Sophie" Davidson, 94, of Decatur died Sunday, Jan. 21, 2001, at Sunbridge Care and Rehabilitation.
Funeral will be Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. at Central United Methodist Church with Roselawn Funeral Home directing and the Rev. Hal Noble officiating. The family will receive friends from 9:30 to 10:30 in the church parlor.
Davidson's efforts to maintain the city cemetery paralleled his love of Decatur's history. He knew bits of history about many of the people buried there, including early leaders.
A 1992 newspaper article featured Davidson and his work with the cemetery.
"Those people buried out there in that cemetery are the ones who made Decatur," he said. "There are people out there from before the Civil War, and we've got an obligation to those people. They are the ones who put Decatur together and I think we ought to do what we can."
Last summer as his 94th birthday approached, Davidson was still at work in his flower garden at the cemetery near Alabama 20, which featured zinnias and petunias.
His son-in-law, Joe Sides, said in addition to Davidson's respect for history he had another reason for working hard for the cemetery.
"He said so many of his friends were out there," Sides said.
Davidson's efforts included details like scrubbing moss off of tombstones with his secret formula of Clorox and water. But city leaders saw him frequently when the cemetery needed bigger work.
"Sophie was kind of a burr under their saddle, always pushing them for projects," Sides said.
The retired owner of Davidson Heating and Air Conditioning Service, he was past chairman of the Salvation Army, a lifelong member of Central United Methodist Church, chairman of the city Parks and Recreation board, chairman of the Farmer's Market, a member of the Committee on Church Cooperation and a former scoutmaster.
Davidson's name was synonymous with the Decatur Rotary Club, which he joined in 1936 and where he recorded 52 years of perfect attendance. His co-members named him a Paul Harris Fellow, the highest honor that Rotary International bestows. He was president of the club in 1957-58, sergeant-at-arms and a director.
Davidson was born July 23, 1906, in Decatur to Hugh Lawson Davidson and Susie Wilson Davidson.
Survivors include his wife, Martha Davidson; two daughters, Glee Davidson Sides of Decatur and Diana Walker of Birmingham; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
