G.J. Mathis
78, U.S. Army veteran

ARDMORE -- Funeral for G.J. Mathis, 78, of Toney will be Friday at 2 p.m. at Taylor-Ardmore Funeral Home.

Burial will be in Golightly Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 5 to 9 at the funeral home.

Mr. Mathis died Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2001, at Huntsville Hospital East. He was born May 12, 1922. He was a World War II Army veteran, who served under Gen. George Patton and participated in the Normandy invasion on D-Day. He was a member of Mable Hill Baptist Church in Ardmore.

Survivors include his wife, Bernice Mathis; one son, Gilbert Mathis of Toney; one daughter, Kay Newman of Toney; three brothers, James Mathis of Toney, Thurman Mathis and Hurtis Mathis, both of Huntsville; two sisters, Wilma Stafford of Hazel Green and Jewel Fowler of Gurley; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Donald Ray Morgan
67, retired postmaster

CULLMAN -- Donald Ray Morgan, 67, who served 27 years as Eva's postmaster and 18 years as a member of the Eva Town Council, died at his daughter's home in Eva on Wednesday.

The funeral will be Friday at Eva United Methodist Church with the Rev. Sandra Locke-Godbey officiating. Burial will be in Eva Cemetery with Moss Service Funeral Home directing. The family will receive friends tonight from 5 to 8 at the funeral home.

Mr. Morgan was born July 31, 1933, in Morgan County to John Morgan and Velma French Morgan. He became postmaster in 1959 and served until his retirement in 1986. He was a charter member of Eva's town council when the town was incorporated in 1963. He served on the council until 1981. He was a U.S. Army veteran and the widower of Peggy Lou McDearmond Morgan, who died Nov. 17, 1994.

Survivors include one son, Robin R. Morgan of Huntsville; one daughter, Susan M. Elam of Eva; one sister, Wynell Daniel of Birmingham; and two grandchildren.

Otha 'Steve' Stephenson
87, retired pipe fitter and welder

Funeral for Otha "Steve" Stephenson, 87, of Decatur will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Roselawn Funeral Home with the Rev. Tim Barnes and the Rev. Randy VanLandingham officiating.

Burial will be in Roselawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at the funeral home.

Mr. Stephenson died Tuesday, Jan. 31, 2001, at Decatur General Hospital. He was born July 22, 1913, in Leoma, Tenn., to John Wesley Stephenson and Lou Land Stephenson.

He was a member of Ninth Street United Methodist Church and Masonic Lodge No. 29 of Decatur. He was retired from Monsanto, where he worked as a pipe fitter and welder.

Survivors include his wife, Mildred Stephenson; two sons, Ray Stephenson of Huntsville and Stewart Stephenson of Decatur; one daughter, Gayle Aycock of Decatur; three sisters, Oveda Hammond of Decatur and Essie Stephenson and Ressie Rochester, both of Lawrenceburg, Tenn.; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Pallbearers will be Daniel Aycock, Wes Stephenson, Brad Aycock, Don Reeder, David Stephenson and Gary Rochester.

Connie Carl Vest
76, Chrysler retiree

HARTSELLE -- Funeral for Connie Carl Vest, 76, of Hartselle will be Friday at 1 p.m. at Peck Funeral Home with the Rev. Mike Green e officiating.

Burial will be in Hartselle Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at the funeral home.

Mr. Vest died Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2001, at Decatur General Hospital. He was born May 30, 1924, in Morgan County to Connie Ester Vest and Maudie Lilian Story Vest.

He was a Baptist and retiree of Chrysler Corp. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a member of the 77th Infantry Division. He was the father of Carol Joyce Vest.

Survivors include three sons, Danny Carl Vest and Timothy James Vest, both of Hartselle, and John Alan Vest of Dadeville; one daughter, Connie Michelle Vest of Hartselle; one brother, Elbert "Dick" Vest of Hartselle; two sisters, Sarah Kathrine Abney of Valley and Vera Wilma Powell of Smiths; six grandchildren; one great-grandson.

Pallbearers will be Luke Vest, Keith Ferguson, Craig Knox, Johnny Johns, Allen King and Tony Kelso.

Meagen Dean Harris
24, market management employee

ADDISON -- Funeral for Meagen Dean Harris, 24, of Denver, Colo., will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Nichols Funeral Home.

Burial will be in Moulton City Cemetery. The family will receive friends Sunday night from 6 to 9 at the funeral home.

Miss Harris died Thursday, Feb. 1, 2001, in Oklahoma City. She was born Aug. 14, 1976, in Cullman to Burgess Clayton Harris and Eulene Maddox Harris. She worked in market management with Carquest Industries.

Survivors include her mother of Addison; six brothers, Jon Harris of Decatur, Rex Harris of Moulton, Patrick Millican of Stillwater, Okla., Eric McKnett of Keller, Texas, and Jeff McKnett and Mark McKnett, both of Memphis; one sister, Terri Anne Byars of Moulton; her grandfather, James O. Maddox of Addison; and her grandmother, Bessie Payne Maddox of Addison.

Aubie Jack Jones
72, truck driver

MOULTON -- Funeral for Aubie Jack Jones, 72, of Moulton will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Jones Chapel Church with the Rev. Tony Peppers and the Rev. Gary Ashley officiating.

Burial will be in the church cemetery with Lawrence Funeral Home directing. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 9 at the funeral home.

Mr. Jones died Thursday, Feb. 1, 2001, at Huntsville Hospital. He was born Aug. 28, 1928, in Lawrence County. He was retired from the Alabama Department of Transportation as a truck driver, and was a member of Jones Chapel Church.

Survivors include his wife, Shelby Jones of Moulton; one son, Darrell Jones of Moulton; two daughters, Teresa McCoy of Baldwin, Miss., and Debbie Little of Mount Hope; four brothers, Bedford Jones, Rayburn Jones and Fieldee Jones, all of Moulton, and Boother Jones of Huntsville; three sisters, Clezell Grimes, Gaye Livingston and Willodean Letson, all of Moulton; and four grandsons.

Pallbearers will be Joy Lee Terry, Harlan Jones, Alan Livingston, Johnothan Reeves, Roger Jones and Jodie Jones.

William 'Bill' Mitchell
48, welder

HARTSELLE -- Funeral for William "Bill" Mitchell, 48, of Hartselle will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Piney Grove Christian Church with the Rev. James H. Henderson officiating.

Burial will be in Piney Grove Cemetery with Peck Funeral Home directing. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 9 at the funeral home.

Mr. Mitchell died Thursday, Feb. 1, 2001, at Huntsville Hospital East. He was born April 5, 1952, in Morgan County to Bill Mitchell and Addie Elizabeth Williams Mitchell. He was a welder at Lone Wolf Manufacturing Company in Falkville. He was a member of Piney Grove Christian Church.

Survivors include three sons, Chris Crowell of Scottsboro and Willie Mitchell and Gary Mitchell, both of Hartselle; two daughters, Becky Mitchell of Cullman and Delta Lindley of Hartselle; two brothers, Gurney Williams of Vinemont and James Mitchell of Morgan City; three sisters, Lena Steele and Rachel Sheppard, both of Falkville, and Lizzie Ray of Moulton; and three grandchildren.

Lela Mae Willard
79, homemaker

ATHENS -- Funeral for Lela Mae Willard, 79, of Toney, will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Spry Funeral Home with the Rev. Tim Keenum officiating.

Burial will be in Ford's Chapel Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 9 at the funeral home.

Mrs. Willard died Thursday, Feb. 1, 2001, at Athens-Limestone Hospital. She was born Jan. 20, 1922, in Limestone County. She was a homemaker and a member of Sardis Springs Baptist Church. She was the mother of the late Curtis Willard.

Survivors include three sons, Chester Williams of Huntsville, Kenneth Willard of Athens and John Willard of McMinnville, Tenn.; one daughter, Sarah Stoner of Ardmore, Tenn.; one brother, Buddy Williams of Louisville, Ky.; four sisters, Helen Ables of Ardmore, Tenn., and Viola Griffin, Louise Hamley and Christine Shannon, all of Ardmore; 10 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Ernest Franklin Woods
69, construction worker

Funeral for Ernest Franklin Woods, 69, of Decatur, will be Saturday at noon at Shelton Funeral Home with the Rev. John Bain officiating.

Burial will be in Grange Hall Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at the funeral home.

Mr. Woods died Jan. 31, 2001, at Decatur General Hospital. He was born Nov. 21, 1931, in Morgan County to Will Woods and Verdine McCluskey Woods. He was the father of the late Mark Douglas Woods and brother of the late William Woods and Ida Kelley. He was a construction worker.

Survivors include, his wife, Martha Woods; five sons, Michael Jackson Woods, Jeffery Woods and Mark Daniel Woods, all of Decatur, Roy Woods of Hartselle and Ernest Franklin Woods Jr. of Mississippi; four daughters, Melissa Woods Kyle and Karen Woods, both of Decatur, Martha Woods Lindsey of Trinity and Ruby Woods Herring of Mississippi; two brothers, Conrad Woods of Trinity, Arthur L. Woods of Decatur; four sisters, Mary Thorn of Decatur, Dorothy Sapp and Gail Jones, both of Trinity, and Imagean Posey of Phoenix; eight grandchildren and three step-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Allen Jones, Roy Lee Woods, Joe Ray, Michael Anthony Jackson Jr., Gregory Williams and Jonathan Wilhite Jr.

Gladys Opal Adcock
84, homemaker
MOULTON -- Funeral for Gladys Opal Adcock, 84, of Mount Hope will be today at 2 p.m. at Lawrence Funeral Home with the Rev. Terry Bendall officiating.

Burial will be in Old Bethel Cemetery in Leighton.

Mrs. Adcock died Thursday, Feb. 1, 2001, at Decatur General Hospital. She was born April 25, 1916, in Franklin County to Floyd Myrick and Margaret Summers Myrick. She was a homemaker. She was the widow of Garvin Adcock.

Survivors include two sons, John Adcock of Leighton and Jack Adcock of Mount Hope; three daughters, Dorthy Robbins, Mary Sue Dempsey and Fay Norwood, all of Mount Hope; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Bryan Hood, Phillip Lawrimore, Steve Lansford, Herman Lawrimore, Dempsey Fleming, Billy Wimberly, Derrick Hill and Miles Gaston.

MOULTON -- Daniel Ray Cartee, 42, of Moulton died Friday, Feb. 2, 2001, at Huntsville Hospital. Elliott Funeral Home will announce funeral arrangements.

Mattie M. Golden
96, tax collector

RUSSELLVILLE -- Funeral for Mattie M. Golden, 96, of Russellville will be Sunday at 3:30 p.m. at Spry Funeral Home with the Rev. Roe Wren and the Rev. Jerome Sherrill officiating.

Burial will be in Franklin Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 9 at the funeral home.

Mrs. Golden died Friday, Feb. 2, 2001, at Russellville Hospital. She was born Dec. 3, 1904, in Franklin County to Sterling Jackson Barker and Sudie Amanda Hurley Barker. She was a homemaker, a former Franklin County tax collector and a member of Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church. She was the widow of Martin R. Golden Sr. and the mother of the late Annie Sue Golden Cooley.

Survivors include one son, Martin R. Golden Jr. of Russellville; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.

Pallbearers will be Thomas Barker, Howard Barker, Mike Graham, Bill Puckett, Chad McDuffa and Marty Graham.

Winnie Lee Higgins
81, former sales clerk

ATHENS -- Funeral for Winnie Lee Higgins, 81, of Athens will be Monday at 10 a.m. at McConnell Funeral Home with the Rev. Dr. Steven Screws officiating.

Burial will be in Roselawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends Sunday night from 6 to 8 at the funeral home.

Mrs. Higgins died Thursday, Feb. 1, 2001, at Athens Convalescent Center. She was born Jan. 15, 1920, in Vinita, Okla., to Charles Edward Ketchum and Ella Maxine Cates Ketchum. She was a former sales clerk for a women's clothing store. She moved to Athens in 1988 and was a member of First United Methodist Church of Athens. She was the widow of Donald Eugene Higgins and the sister of the late Clarence Ketchum and Buster Ketchum.

Survivors include one son, Charles M. Higgins Sr. of Raleigh, N.C.; one daughter, Brenda S. Tolen of Athens; one sister, Ruth Maxine Rattler of Tulsa, Okla.; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Drew Tolen, Chris Butler, William Eubanks, William Marshall, James Tolen and Mark Thomas.
