Ruth Helen 'Monk' Goehler
84, homemaker

ATHENS -- Funeral for Ruth Helen "Monk" Goehler, 84, of Athens was to be today at 3:30 p.m. at McConnell Funeral Home with the Rev. Ron Reinhardt officiating.

Burial was to be in Athens City Cemetery.

Mrs. Goehler died Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2001, at Limestone Health Facility. She was born Oct. 25, 1916, in Limestone County to Luke Rogers and Madge Jones Rogers. She was a longtime member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Decatur and a charter member of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Athens. She was the widow of Herbert Goehler and a homemaker.

Survivors include one son, Paul Goehler Jr. of Decatur; one daughter, Lee O'Hara of Athens; and one granddaughter.

Pallbearers were to be Albert Norton, Bill Wolfe, James Rogers, Nick McGee, Bud Kurz, and Reuben Blackburn.

Memorials may be made to St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 1700 Carridale St. S.W., Decatur, AL 35601.

Sue Ball Hagood
95, homemaker

ATHENS -- Funeral for Sue Ball Hagood, 95, of Athens will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Spry Funeral Home with Joey Curtis and Chris Kemp officiating. Burial will be in Dement Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 9 at the funeral home.

Mrs. Hagood died Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2001, at her home. She was born Dec. 28, 1905, in Limestone County to Walter Ball and Addie Flanagan Ball. She was a member of Oakland Church of Christ and a homemaker. She was the widow of James P. Hagood.

Survivors include two daughters, Annie Ruth Smith and Nancy Holland, both of Athens; three sisters, Ruby Barker and Betty Maude Hooie, both of Athens, and Alma Brooks of Truman, Ark.; six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and 13 great-great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Jim Holland, Gary Smith, Phillip Smith, Chris Smith, Scott Smith and Brent White.

Benjamin Charles Powell
82, retired machinist

HARTSELLE -- Funeral for Benjamin Charles Powell, 82, of Hartselle will be Friday at 2 p.m. at Salem United Methodist Church with the Rev. David Weaver and the Rev. Debbie Wade officiating.

Burial will be in the adjoining cemetery with Peck Funeral Home directing. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 9 at the funeral home and the body will be at the church one hour before the service.

Mr. Powell died Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2001, at Hartselle Medical Center. He was born Aug. 23, 1918, to Benjamin N. Powell and Chollie B. Robinson Powell. He retired as a machinist from Jax Machine and was a member of Salem United Methodist Church, where he was a former trustee, a member of United Methodist Men and on the Salem Cemetery Committee. A World War II Army veteran, he was a member of the Pearl Harbor Survivor Association Inc. and the American Legion.

Survivors include his wife, Margaret N. Powell of Hartselle; two sons, Ben Powell Jr. of Dexter, Mich., and Ray Powell of Pennsylvania; three daughters, Elsie Schultz of Fort Valley, Ga., Linda Schultz of Wayne, Mich., and Sherry Jobst of Byron, Ga.; two stepdaughters, Celia Vest and Jane Garner, both of Hartselle; one brother, John E. Powell of St. Petersburg, Fla.; three sisters, Carlene P. Johnson of Hartselle, and Murl J. Warren and Betty L. Peppers, both of Danville; 13 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; and 14 step-great-grandchildren.

Grandsons will be pallbearers. The Salem Men's Sunday School Class will be honorary pallbearers.

Susie Lee Ragan
91, homemaker

MOULTON -- Funeral for Susie Lee Ragan, 91, of Hillsboro will be Friday at 2 p.m. at Elliott Funeral Home with O.D. Bowling and Paul Summerford officiating.

Burial will be in East Lawrence Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at the funeral home.

Mrs. Ragan died Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2001, at Lawrence Baptist Medical Center. She was born Sept. 13, 1909, in Lawrence County to Roman Cottingham and Pearl Tolbert Cottingham. She was a homemaker and a lifelong member of Antioch Church of Christ. She was the widow of Jeff Ragan.

Survivors include one daughter, Daisy Pitt of Moulton; two sisters, Pearlie Chavez of Richmond, Calif. and Lizzie Terry of Hillsboro; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandsons.

Pallbearers will be Gordon Jones Jr., James Payne, Randy Newman, Jeff Beasley, Larry McLemore and Gwyn Pitt.

William Beuin Rutherford
56, retired construction worker

MOULTON -- Funeral for William Beuin Rutherford, 56, of Moulton will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Elliott Funeral Home with the Rev. Neal Carter officiating.

Burial will be in Rutherford Cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday night from 6 to 8 at the funeral home.

Mr. Rutherford died Sunday, Aug. 5, 2001, in New Mexico. He was born April 16, 1945, in Lawrence County to William Herschel Rutherford and Geneva Rutherford Carroll. He was a construction worker who retired from Monsanto.

Survivors include his mother and stepfather, Geneva Carroll and Windham Carroll of Moulton; one daughter, Stacy Page of Haleyville; one brother, Drennen H. Rutherford of Anniston; and two grandchildren.

Former and present members of the 1st Special Forces Group Airborne will be pallbearers.

Ceola Beatrice 'C.B.' Pointer Swoope 68, NARCOG senior aide / school crossing guard

Funeral for Ceola Beatrice "C.B." Pointer Swoope, 68, of Decatur will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at First Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Herbert Cartwright Jr. officiating.

Burial will be in Sterrs Cemetery with Reynolds Funeral Home directing.

The family will receive friends Friday night from 6 to 7 at the funeral home.

The body will be at the church one hour before the service.

Mrs. Swoope died Monday, Aug. 6, 2001, at her home. She was born Dec. 12, 1932, in Decatur to Pat Pointer and Ola Mae Hampton Pointer. She was a senior aide with North-central Alabama Regional Council of Governments and also worked as a crossing guard at Walter Jackson Elementary School. She was known as a beautician in the community. She was a member of First Missionary Baptist Church, where she served on the Deaconess Board and the Kitchen Committee, and was leader of Group No. 7. She sang in the Restoration Choir. She was a graduate of Decatur Negro High School and served as treasurer of her high school alumni committee.

Survivors include two sons, David Lyle of Chicago and James Swoope of Arlington, Texas; one daughter, Edith Garner of Decatur; two stepsons, Greg Scruggs of Decatur and Douglas Bankston of Cleveland, Ohio; one stepdaughter, Myrle Smith of Hillsboro; one brother, Leon Pointer of San Fernando, Calif.; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Deacons of the church will be pallbearers.

Thomas Jefferson Adkins
Memorial service for Thomas Jefferson Adkins, 93, of Chicago will be tonight from 5 to 6 at Sharpley Funeral Home.

Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery in Chicago.

Mr. Adkins died Saturday, Aug. 4, 2001, at his home. He was born May 31, 1908, in Morgan County to Lawson Adkins and Mary Adkins. He and his family moved to Chicago in 1945. He was a member of St. Luke Baptist Church. He was the widower of Louisa Baker and the father of the late Thomas Adkins Jr., Mary Adkins and Margarite Adkins.

Survivors include one son, William H. Adkins of Long Island, N.Y.; one sister, Ruth Barker of Decatur; seven grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.

Orville W. Carr
80, Winn Dixie employee

Funeral for Orville W. Carr, 80, of Tanner will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Ridout's Brown-Service Funeral Home with the Rev. Mike Clem officiating.

Burial will in Burnout Cemetery. The family will receive friends Saturday morning from 9 to 11 at the funeral home.

Mr. Carr died Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2001, at Huntsville Hospital. He was born May 4, 1921, in Franklin County to Curtis Carr and Amy Weatherbee Carr. He served in World War II in the U.S. Navy. He worked for Winn Dixie in Athens, and he was a member of Southside Baptist Church in Athens.

Survivors include his wife, Betty Carr; one son, Robert Whatley of Decatur; one daughter, Beverly Nelson of Oneonta; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Deacons of Southside Baptist Church will be pallbearers.

Suzanne Childers

HARTSELLE -- Graveside service for Suzanne Childers, 41, of Hartselle will be Saturday at noon at Cook Cemetery with the Rev. Keith Whitley and the Rev. Steve Smith officiating.

The family will receive friends at Peck Funeral Home on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.

Miss Childers died Thursday, Aug, 9, 2001, at her home. She was born Aug. 17, 1959, in Morgan County to Brady Lewis Childers and Bessie Vanell Turney Childers. She was the sister of the late Steve Childers and Gregory Childers.

Survivors include two brothers, Keith Childers of Hartselle and Anthony Childers of Oden Ridge; one half-brother, Lewis Childers of Sanford, Fla.; and two half-sisters, Betty Eastham and Dorothy Childers, both of Florida.

Ruby Garner Dunaway
88, homemaker

HARTSELLE _ -- Funeral for Ruby Garner Dunaway, 88, of Somerville will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Union Church of Christ with Roland Roberts officiating.

Burial will be in Burningtree Memorial Gardens with Peck Funeral Home directing. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 9 at the funeral home. The body will be at the church for one hour before the service.

Mrs. Dunaway died Thursday, Aug. 9, 2001, at Decatur General Hospital. She was born June 14, 1913, in Morgan County to John Earl Garner and Mattie Garner. She was a member of Union Church of Christ and the widow of M.C. Dunaway. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include one son, Harold Dunaway of Somerville; two daughters, Julia Tapscott of Somerville and Linda Bessent of Richmond Hill, Ga.; nine grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Pallbearers will be Laurice Garner, Seybourne Garner, J.C. Dunaway, Glenn Holmes, David Holmes and Chris Adcock.

Roy H. Evans Jr.
84, retired foreman

HARTSELLE -- Memorial service for Roy H. Evans Jr., 84, of Hartselle will be announced by Peck Funeral Home.

Mr. Evans died Sunday, Aug. 5, 2001, at Decatur General Hospital. He was born May 16, 1917, in Kansas City, Mo., to Roy H. Evans Sr. and Bertha Kershaw Evans. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, where he served on the destroyer USS Kimberley. He retired in 1982 from Cooks Paint & Varnish Co., of North Kansas City, Mo., where he was a foreman.

Survivors include his wife, of 55 years, Ila Mae Evans; one son, Dennis R. Evans of Ozark, Mo.; one daughter, Pam Carlisle of Hartselle; and four grandchildren.

Hugh C. 'Roscoe' Hargrove
23, construction worker

ATHENS -- Funeral for Hugh C. "Roscoe" Hargrove, 23, of Athens will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Spry Funeral Home with the Rev. James Turner officiating.

Burial will be in Roselawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 9 at the funeral home.

Mr. Hargrove died Thursday, Aug. 9, 2001, in Limestone County. He was born July 18, 1978, in Morgan County to Bill Hargrove and Donna S. Hargrove. He was an employee of B.E.&K. Construction Co.

Survivors include his parents; one brother, Michael Hargrove of Athens; and his grandparents, Buford Eastep and Ruby Eastep, both of Athens.

Pallbearers will be Michael Hargrove, Jason Webster, Scott Hargrove, Jeremy Ham, Jeff Ham, and Ross Hargrove.

Leland 'Pete' Carl Harris
58, machinist

Graveside service for Leland "Pete" Carl Harris, 58, of Decatur will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Roselawn Cemetery with Roselawn Funeral Home directing.

Mr. Harris died today, Aug. 10, 2001, at Parkway Medical Center. He was born Jan. 16, 1943, in St. Joseph, Mo., to Carl Harris and June Marie Harbor Harris. He was a machinist and a U.S. Navy veteran. He was a Baptist.

Survivors include his wife, Louann Harris; two daughters, Paige Clark of Hartselle and Brooke Harris of Decatur; two sisters; and one granddaughter.

Pallbearers will be Lynn Fox, Brien Clark, James Tanner, Larry Torain, Jay Anderson and Randy Gillespie.
