A graveside service for Gayle Morgan Scott, 55, of Gardendale was Wednesday, September 15, at 1:30 p.m. at Herring Cemetery with the Rev. Ken Wilson officiating and Peck Funeral Home directing.
A memorial service was Wednesday, September 15, at 10:30 a.m. at Briarwood Presbyterian Church in Hoover.
Mrs. Scott died Sunday, September 12, 1999 at her residence. She was a native of Lauderdale County and a member of Briarwood Presbyterian Church. She was a strategic accounting manager at AT&T in Birmingham.
She is survived by her husband, Jim R. Scott of Gardendale; two sons, Kyle Morgan Downs and Keith Hamilton Downs, both of Houston, Tex.; one stepson, Michael Fredrick Scott of Birmingham; one stepdaughter, Shannon Michelle Scott of Moulton; and one grandchild.
Harold Van Devender
Funeral for Harold Van Devender, 68, of Florence was Friday, September 10, at 11:00 a.m. at Greenview Funeral Home with the Rev. Graham Edwards and Randy Baker officiating.
Mr. Van Devender died Wednesday, September 8, 1999, at his residence. He was a member of Colonial Heights Baptist Church in Jackson, Miss., a member of Florence Civitan Club and a co-founder and member of St. Florian Civitan Club. He was author of several books and editor of AL North District Echo.
He is survived by his wife, Georgia Livingston Van Devender of Florence, formerly of Eva; one daughter, Jennifer Van Devender Lollar of Jackson, Miss.; three brothers, Fred Van Devender of Port Neches, Tex., Dr. George Van Devender of Abilene, Tex., and Robert Van Devender of Union, Miss; and two granddaughters.
Ira N. Oden
Funeral for Ira N. Oden, 88, of Eva was Saturday, September 11, at 2:00 p.m. at Oden Ridge Baptist Church with the Rev. Raymond Stinson officiating.
Burial was in the adjoining cemetery with Peck Funeral Home directing.
Mr. Oden died Wednesday, September 8, 1999, at Falkville Healthcare Center. He was a native of Morgan County and a member of Oden Ridge Baptist Church. He was a retired farmer and the father of the late Charles A. Oden.
He is survived by his wife, Clara V. Oden of Eva; one son, James Armstrong of Eva; two daughters, Bonnie Kent of Mary Ester, Fla., and Connie Oden of Trussville; one sister, Edith Aday of Oden Ridge; five grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Ray Stinson, Tony Ponter, Arvel Allison, Andy Allison, Donald Allison and Phene Allison.
Jean Jones Yates
Funeral for Jean Jones Yates, 76, of Decatur was Friday, September 10, at 10:00 a.m. at Ridout's Brown Service Funeral Home with the Rev. Joe Hoover officiating.
Burial was in Roselawn Cemetery.
Mrs. Yates died Tuesday, September 7, 1999, at her residence She was a native of Morgan County and a member of Southside Baptist Church. She was a former employee of Cook's Pest Control.
She is survived by one son, Tony Jones of Decatur; one daughter, Kim Ward of Hartselle; one brother, the Rev. Herbert Palmer of Phenix City; eight grandchildren; and 12 great grandchildren.
John David Burnham
Funeral for John David Burnham, 77, of Decatur was Sunday, September 12, at 4:30 p.m. at Shelton Funeral Home with the Revs. James McDonald and Vernon Boland officiating.
Burial followed at 6:00 p.m. at Hopewell Cemetery in Hanceville.
Mr. Burnham died Friday, September 10, 1999 at his residence. He was a native of Cherokee County and former owner of Jerry's Restaurant in Decatur.
He is survived by two sons, Jerry Burnham of Decatur and Larry Burnham of Cullman; two daughters, Charlotte Ann Richter of Anniston and Darlene Burnham of Dallas, Tex.; two sisters, Ruth Pence of Hanceville and Mary Ola Cason of Decatur; nine grandchildren; and four great grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Clayton Burnham, Harold Burnham, David Burnham, Wayne Robertson, Sr., Wayne Robertson, Jr., Rex Wilborn and Bruce Lattu.
Mamie Morgan
Funeral for Mamie Morgan, 86, of Decatur was Friday, September 10, at 2:00 p.m. at Shelton Funeral Home with the Revs. Tom Campbell and Craig Carlisle officiating.
Burial was in Caddo Cemetery.
Miss Morgan died Wednesday, September 8, 1999, at Parkway Medical Center Hospital. She was a native of Lawrence County, a Baptist and retired from Goodyear Cotton Mill. She was the sister of the late Acie Morgan and Casey Morgan.
She is survived by two brothers, Frank Morgan of Decatur and Redding Morgan of Danville; and one sister, Dottie Wright of Decatur.
Nephews were pallbearers.
Mary Sue Stephenson
Funeral for Mary Sue Stephenson, 94, of Falkville was Tuesday, September 14, at 1:30 p.m. at Peck Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Harold Thompson officiating.
Burial was in Moss Chapel Cemetery.
Ms. Stephenson died Sunday, September 12, 1999, at Decatur General Hospital. She was a native of Alabama, a United Methodist and a lifelong resident of Morgan County.
She is survived by several nephews and nieces and cousins.
Pallbearers were Bobby Boger, Donald Parker, Dale Vandiver, Rodger Vandiver, Sidney Stephnson and Keith Jeffries.
Rev. J.D. Douthit
Funeral for the Rev. J.D. Douthit, 85, of Eva was Saturday, September 11, at 2:00 p.m. at Blue Springs Baptist Church with the Revs. Jon Campbell and Cliff Mitchell officiating.
Burial was in Rock Creek Cemetery with Peck Funeral Home directing.
Rev. Douthit died Thursday, September 9, 1999, at Decatur General Hospital. He was a native of Texas and a Baptist minister for 50 years. He served churches in Alabama, Georgia and Washington. He was pastor of Rock Creek Baptist Church in Morgan County and a Morgan County school teacher for 18 years. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and served in 10 major engagements in the South Pacific as a crewmember of the USS Tingy.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Douthit of Eva; three sons, Jimmy Douthit of Gadsden, and Steve Douthit and Bob Douthit, both of Eva; nine grandchildren; and one great grandchild.
Pallbearers were Kenny Bennefield, Brandon Butler, Brad Douthit, Chris Douthit, Eric Douthit, Greg Metcalf and Nick Douthit.
