John D. Long
June 22, 2009
A memorial service for John D. Long, former longtime Mayor of Hartselle, will be Thursday (today), June 25, at 2 p.m. at First United Methodist Church of Hartselle with Peck Funeral Home directing.
Mr. Long, 83, died Monday, June 22, 2009. He was born December 27, 1925, in Hartselle to Roy Guy Long and Mamie Roberts Long.
He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII in the Pacific theatre. After receiving a honorable discharge he returned to Hartselle to work for the L&N; Railroad in both Hartselle and Decatur for 20 years. He was then recruited to work for ConAgra as the traffic manager for the southeast and retired after 20 years of service. In addition, during the same period, he served as a city councilman, mayor pro-tem for four years and mayor for 16 years, retiring after 20 years of service. As mayor he was instrumental in bringing multiple industries to the city. One of his proudest accomplishments was initiating and implementing the change from a county to a city school system. He was a member of First United Methodist Church of Hartselle, numerous civic organizations and was an avid golfer. After retirement he and his wife traveled extensively, visiting many parts of the world. He was preceded in death by a son, Dr. Thomas Ray Long of Hendersonville, N.C.
He is survived by his wife, Jean Moore Long of Decatur; two sons, John P. Long of Kansas City, Mo. and Robert G. Long of Pelham; a sister, Roylean Lewis of Neel; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to the First United Methodist Church of Hartselle.

Mr. and Mrs. O.E. Crauswell

A graveside service for Nellie Gean Crauswell, 78, of Hartselle was Wednesday, June 24, at 11 a.m. at Hartselle Memory Gardens with the Rev. John Ramey officiating and Peck Funeral Home directing.
Mrs. Crauswell died Friday, June 19, 2009, at her residence. She was born January 11, 1931, in Cullman County to William Whitfield and Pearl Dean Whitfield. She had been a long-time attendee of First Church of God of Hartselle until failing health kept her from attending. She was the beloved wife of Mr. O.E. Crauswell for 60 years. She was a frequent giver to Meals on Wheels and helped others in the community. She and her husband enjoyed taking walks in the community holding hands together.
She is survived by her husband, Osbon Eugene Crauswell of Hartselle; two daughters, Deborah Crauswell Free and husband Wade and Becky Crauswell Chandler and husband Allen, all of Madison; a brother, Clark Whitfield and wife Elsie of Hanceville; a sister, Willie Lee Mitchell of Jefferson County; three grandchildren, Wendy Free Steele and husband Carl of Kelso, Tenn., Elizabeth Ann Moyers Taylor and husband Rick of Toney and Michael Bradford of Madison; and three great-grandchildren, Cody Waynn Steele, Adam Steele and Olivia Grace Taylor.
Pallbearers were Wade Free, Michael Bradford, Allen Chandler, Rick Taylor, Carl Steele and Harrell Collins.
A graveside service for Osbon Eugene Crauswell, 78, of Hartselle was Wednesday, June 24, at 11 a.m. at Hartselle Memory Gardens with the Rev. John Ramey officiating and Peck Funeral Home directing.
Mr. Crauswell died Friday, June 19, 2009, at his residence. He was born February 1, 1931, in Cullman County to Mike O. Crauswell and Thenia M. Dean Crauswell. He had been a barber in Hartselle for 45 years. He had been a long time attendee of First Church of God of Hartselle until failing health kept him from attending. He was well known and loved by his community and friends. He and his wife were avid walkers always holding hands together. He was a very loving husband of Nellie Gean Crauswell for 60 years. He was preceded in death by his wife.
He is survived by two daughters, Deborah Crauswell Free and husband Wade and Becky Crauswell Chandler and husband Allen, all of Madison; a sister, Patricia Collins of Cullman Co.; three grandchildren, Wendy Free Steele and husband Carl of Kelso, Tenn., Elizabeth Ann Moyers Taylor and husband Rick of Toney and Michael Bradford of Madison; and three great-grandchildren, Cody Waynn Steele, Adam Lee Steele and Olivia Grace Taylor.
Pallbearers were Wade Free, Michael Bradford, Allen Chandler, Rick Taylor, Carl Steele and Harrell Collins.

Raymond C. Smith Sr.
June 23, 2009
A graveside service for Raymond C. Smith Sr., of Oak Ridge, Tenn. will be Friday, June 26, at 11 a.m. at KP Cemetery in Russellville with Johnny Richardson officiating and Hartselle Heritage Funeral Home directing.
Visitation will be Thursday (today) from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
Mr. Smith died peacefully in his sleep Tuesday, June 23, 2009, at his residence.
He was born in 1918, in Bookwalter, Neb. to Harvey and Lurie Smith. He was one of nine children.
His early work consisted of farming until he began a boxing career in the mid-1930’s. He fought under the name “Buzzy Ray” becoming a welter-weight contender until hurt in an industrial accident in 1938.
He was drafted in 1942 and earned the title of Welter-Weight Boxing Champion of the Armed Forces in 1942 and 1943. He served in the Pacific Island campaigns as a forward observer with the 300th Cannon Company of the 390th Infantry Division. After the war, he worked as a machinist and retired from TVA in 1979. He remained active in boxing by coaching in Golden Glove competition as well as many years as a little league coach. He was also an avid golfer, bowler and pool player. He was a 50-year member of Masonic Lodge No. 371 in Russellville. He was a member of the New York Avenue Church of Christ in Oak Ridge, Tenn. and a former member of the Grant Street Church of Christ in Decatur and the Eastside Church of Christ in Russellville. He was preceded in death by his wife of 47 years, Mattye Kimbrough Smith of Russellville and Vivian Owens Smith of Decatur, his wife of 10 years.
He is survived by a son, Raymond Smith Jr. of Hobart, Okla.; a daughter, Nancy Ward and husband Bob of Oak Ridge, Tenn.; a sister, Joy Stewart of Marysville, Kan. six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

C.C. Mitchell Jr.
June 16, 2009
Funeral for C.C. Mitchell Jr., 81, of Hartselle was Friday, June 19, at 2 p.m. at Gum Springs Baptist Church with the Rev. Anthony Patterson officiating and Peck Funeral Home directing.
Burial was in Mount Tabor Cemetery in Hartselle.
Mr. Mitchell died Tuesday, June 16, 2009, at Huntsville Hospital. He was born July 16, 1927, in Morgan County to Corbit Charles Mitchell Sr. and Thelma Hopper Mitchell. He was a lifetime member of Gum Springs Baptist Church. He loved his family, gardening and enjoyed various hobbies, including collectibles, antiques and a variety of other things. He was known as ‘Hubcap Mitchell’. He was preceded in death by his wife, Nettie Mitchell.
He is survived by a son, Johnny C. Mitchell and wife Kelle of Birmingham; three daughters, Judy Looney and husband Charles Wayne of Hartselle, Teresa Phillips and husband Jimmy of Decatur and Peggy Griffith and husband Maurice of Somerville; three brothers, Obie Mitchell of Ohio, Bobby Mitchell and Wesley Mitchell, both of California; three sisters, Mable Maze of Decatur, Margie Anders of Massey and Linda Nichols of Arab; and a grandchild, Pamela Burgeson and husband Mark of Hartselle.
Pallbearers were Charles W. Looney, Maurice Griffith, Jimmy Phillips, James Brooks, Austin Kellett and Mark Burgeson.

Michael ‘Posey’ Posey

A memorial service for Michael “Posey” Posey, 44, of Hartselle will be Saturday, June 27, at 9 a.m. at 104 Sparkman Road in Danville with Peck Funeral Home directing. For directions, please call 612-9997 or 502-9214.
Mr. Posey died Thursday, June 18, 2009, at Parkway Medical Center. He was born April 23, 1965, in Morgan County.
He is survived by his mother, Edith Posey of Hartselle; a sister, Brenda Franks and husband Martin of Somerville; two nephews, Josh Franks and Nickolas Franks; and a great niece, Hollie Franks.

Pernie Summerford Morris

Funeral for Pernie Summerford Morris, 96, of Danville was Sunday, June 21, at 3 p.m. at Peck Funeral Home Chapel with Keith Andrews officiating.
Burial was in Herring Cemetery.
Mrs. Morris died Friday, June 19, 2009, at Decatur General Hospital. She was born December 28, 1912, in Morgan County to Newtis Edward Summerford and Virginia Clementine Patterson. She was a longtime member of Cedar Plains Christian Church where she served as a Sunday school teacher, Bible school teacher, secretary and treasurer. She was preceded in death by her husband, James W. Morris; a daughter, Virginia Sue McClellan; two brothers, Wallace Edward Summerford and Robert Sheats Summerford; and two sisters, Bernice S. Bailey and Barbara Ellen S. Jolly.
She is survived by a son-in-law, James O. McClellan of Massey; two sisters, Doris Anders Herring of Massey and Virginia S. Duncan of Boyce, La; two grandchildren, Frank McClellan and wife Cherie and Patti Ozbolt and husband Barry; and five great-grandchildren, Marin McClellan, Morgan McClellan, Brandon Ozbolt, Brooke Ozbolt and Lucas Johnson.
Pallbearers were nephews, Ferrell Anders, Larry Anders, Jack Arnold, Denny Morris, Mac Morris and Lynn Thompson.

Jarmon Willie Wilhite

Jarmon Willie Wilhite, 66, of Falkville died Thursday, June 11, 2009, at Cullman Regional Medical Center. He was born November 7, 1942, to Walter C. Wilhite and Pauline Wilhite. He was preceded in death by his parents.
He is survived by a son, Johnny Wilhite of Hartselle; a daughter, Donna Tankersley of Somerville; and two brothers, Ted Wilhite of Mud Tavern and Bobby Wilhite of Cullman.
