TRINITY -- Funeral arrangements for Tarry Hays, 73, of Hartselle, who died Thursday, Dec. 2, 1999, at Decatur General Hospital, will be announced by Parkway Funeral Home.

John Marshal Ligon Jr.

MOULTON -- Funeral arrangements for John Marshal Ligon Jr., 78, of Moulton, who died Thursday, Dec. 2, 1999, at Carraway Methodist Hospital in Birmingham, will be announced by Lawrence Funeral Home.

The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 9 at the funeral home.

William Malcolm 'Mack' Maples
85, Limestone civic leader

ATHENS -- A longtime leader in the Limestone County civic, political and agriculture fronts, William Malcolm "Mack" Maples, 85, died Thursday at his home after a long battle with cancer.

Maples, who was active in the Democratic Party, both on the local and state levels, throughout his adult life, was also the owner of one of the first registered Angus beef cattle operations in the state.

Beginning in the middle 1970s, Maples chaired the Alabama Elk River Development Association board of directors and was instrumental in establishing the Elkmont Rural Village. He also served as chairman of the Alabama and Limestone County Cattleman's Associations.

He served on the Athens-Limestone Hospital board of directors, Athens State University Foundation, Department of Human Resources board, and Athens-Limestone Chamber of Commerce board. He was an elder at First Presbyterian Church of Athens.

Funeral arrangements will be announced by McConnell Funeral Home.

Novie Marie Boyd
76, homemaker

ATHENS -- Funeral for Novie Marie Boyd, 76, of Athens will be Monday at 2 p.m. at McConnell Funeral Home with the Rev. Doug McCurry officiating.

Burial will be in Athens City Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 9 at the funeral home.

Mrs. Boyd died Saturday, Dec. 4, 1999, at Athens Convalescent Center. She was born Feb. 9, 1923, in Limestone County. She was a homemaker and a member of Madison Street Baptist Church. She was the widow of Frank J. Boyd and the mother of the late Evelyn Webb.

She is survived by one son, Bobby Boyd of Athens; one daughter, Marilyn Martin of Athens; two brothers, Pete King and James King, both of Athens; two sisters, Aileen Faulkner and Bert Miller, both of Athens; nine grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Jeff Martin, Harold Townley, Jason Romine, Bryan Thornton, Jamie Brewer and Glen Martin.

Lurie Lee Cowley
77, homemaker

Funeral for Lurie Lee Cowley, 77, of Decatur will be Monday at noon at Reynolds Funeral Home with the Rev. George Franklin officiating.

Burial will be in Sterrs Cemetery.

Mrs. Cowley died Thursday, Dec. 2, 1999, at Parkway Medical Center Hospital. She was born June 8, 1922, in Limestone County to James and Madgie Harwell Appleton. She was a homemaker.She is survived by one stepdaughter, June Cowley Ford of Decatur.

Nephews will be pallbearers.

Helen Sturges Daniel
77, homemaker

FLORENCE -- Memorial service for Helen Sturges Daniel, 77, of Florence will be today at 4 p.m. in Mullen Hall at Trinity Episcopal Church with the Rev. Marc Burnette officiating.

The family will receive friends at the church one hour before the service. Green view Funeral Home is handling local arrangements.

Mrs. Daniel died Friday, Dec. 3, 1999, at Eliza Coffee Memorial Hospital. She was born Sept. 12, 1922, in Bogalusa, La. She was a homemaker and had lived in the Florence area for the past 44 years.

She is survived by two sons, Ralph M. Sturges Jr. of Nashville and Lawrence E. Sturges of Decatur; two sisters, Joyce Schweitzer of Houston and Marie Louise Cotton of Dallas; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of the Valley, 216 Johnston St., Decatur, AL 35601, or to the American Lung Association, 250 Governors Drive S.E., Suite M, Huntsville, AL 35801.

Virgil Nolan Finch
79, Army liaisonrepresentative

Funeral for Virgil Nolan Finch, 79, of Decatur will be Tuesday at Roselawn Funeral Home with Mike Nix officiating.

Burial will be in Roselawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends Monday night from 6 to 8 at the funeral home.

Mr. Finch died Saturday, Dec. 4, 1999, at home. He was born July 13, 1920, in Ashland to Virgil Copeland and Clarice Pettus Finch. He retired in 1980 after 34 years in civil service. His last place of employment was Redstone Arsenal, where he was a liaison representative for the Army. He was an Army veteran of World War II and a member of Beltline Church of Christ.

He is survived by his wife, Jeanette Finch; one son, Randy Finch of Decatur; and one sister, Nellie Finch of Oxford.

Mary RebeccaGrantland
76, retired clerk

Funeral for Mary Rebecca Grantland, 76, of Hartselle will be Monday at 2 p.m. at Roselawn Funeral Home with the Rev. Todd Evans officiating.

Burial will be in Roselawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at the funeral home.

Mrs. Grantland died Saturday, Dec. 4, 1999, at home. She was born Sept. 11, 1923, in Giles County, Tenn. She was formerly employed at Elmore's department store and at W.T. Grant department store in Decatur before retiring as a clerk and door greeter at Kmart.

She is survived by her husband, Leon Grantland; and one brother, John Chambers of Hartselle.Pallbearers will be Paul Derrington, David Twilley, Kenneth Bolton, Keven Bolton, L.C. Dunn and Rickey White.

Mary MinerviaGrissom
91, Goodyear retiree

HARTSELLE -- Graveside service for Mary Minervia Grissom, 91, of West Morgan Healthcare Center in Trinity will be today at 2 p.m. at Falkville City Cemetery with Peck Funeral Home directing.

The family will receive friends from noon to 1:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

Miss Grissom died Saturday, Dec. 4, 1999, at her home. She was born Dec. 22, 1907, in Dalton, Ga. She retired from Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co.

She is survived by nephews and nieces.

James Ford Hill
75, retired feed mill manager

TRINITY -- Funeral for James Ford Hill, 75, of Moulton will be today at 4 p.m. at Parkway Funeral Home with Hoyt Nelson and Ray McWhorter officiating.

Burial will be in Moulton City Cemetery. The family will receive friends two hours before the service at the funeral home.

Mr. Hill died Saturday, Dec. 4, 1999, at home. He was born March 22, 1924, in Lawrence County to James Tolbert and Annie McMillan Hill. He retired as feed mill manager from the Lawrence County Exchange. He was an Army veteran of World War II and a recipient of the Purple Heart. He was a member of Moulton Church of Christ and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6567.

He is survived by his wife, Betty P. Hill; one son, Jim Hill of Mount Olive; one daughter, Sandra Hill of Pelham; one brother, Clyde Hill of Moulton; one sister, Jewel Jackson of Moulton; and two grandchildren.

Nephews will be pallbearers.

Members of the VFW will be honorary pallbearers.

David Thurman Long
88, retired farmer

ATHENS -- Funeral for David Thurman Long, 88, of Lester will be today at 12:30 p.m. at Limestone Chapel Funeral Home with Charles Gray officiating.

Burial will be in New Salem Cemetery.

Mr. Long died Friday, Dec. 3, 1999, at home. He was born Feb. 28, 1911, in Limestone County. He was a retired farmer and a member of Hester's Chapel Church of Christ.

He is survived by his wife, Lurlean Long; one daughter, Geraldine Long Bassham of Lester; one sister, Lucille Long of Lester; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Donald Long, Henry Jones, Bradley Griggs, Donald Bassham, Eddie Gibbons and Puryear Johnston.
