James Arnold Pitman Sr.
79, retired farmer

ATHENS -- Graveside service for James Arnold Pitman Sr., 79, of Athens will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Roselawn Cemetery with McConnell Funeral Home directing.

The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at the funeral home.

Mr. Pitman died Monday, Aug. 9, 1999, at his home. He was born Jan. 19, 1920, in Robertsdale and was a resident of Limestone County for nine years. He was a member of Marion Junction Baptist Church and a retired farmer. He was a United States Army veteran.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth Pitman; three sons, James A. Pitman Jr., Robert E. Pitman, both of Athens, and Billie Lamar of San Antonio, Texas; three daughters, Laura Sue Weaver of Smiths, Betty Diane Hite of Phoenix and Patricia Ruth Pitman of Murfreesboro, Tenn.; two sisters, Laura Vertrees of Boulder, Colo., and Minnie Lee Sawyer of Pensacola, Fla.; 16 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

Grandchildren will be honorary pallbearers.

Sue R. Ross
68, retired bank vice president

HARTSELLE -- Funeral for Sue R. Ross, 68, of Hartselle was to be today at 11 a.m. at First United Methodist Church of Hartselle with the Rev. Ralph Bates officiating.

Burial was to be in Hartselle City Cemetery with Peck Funeral Home directing.

Mrs. Ross died Saturday, Aug. 7, 1999, at Huntsville Hospital. She was born Dec. 9, 1930, in Morgan County to Frank and Nellie Mae Bennett Robinson.

She was vice president of Citizens Bank of Hartselle and continued to serve in that capacity after the bank was acquired by SouthTrust Bank. She retired after 39 years. She was a member and treasurer of First United Methodist Church of Hartselle for years and a circle leader of the United Methodist Women. She was sister of the late M.B. Robinson.

She is survived by her husband, Bruce Ross; one son, Allan B. Ross of St. Petersburg, Fla.; one brother, William F. Robinson of Falkville; four sisters, Gene Buckelew and Sarah Wallace, both of Hartselle, Mary Robinson of Falkville and Betty Jo Scott of Bay Minette; and two grandchildren.

Pallbearers were to be David Ross, Patrick Buckelew, Billy Buckelew, Jerry Robinson, David Robinson and Ray Robinson.

Jessie Ruth Barnhart
80, retired nurse

Funeral for Jessie Ruth Barnhart, 80, of Decatur will be Friday at 3:30 p.m. at Point Mallard Parkway Church of Christ with Bob McNabb officiating.

Burial will be in Roselawn Cemetery with Rose- lawn Funeral Home directing. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at her home at 1800 Olive St. S.E. The body will be at the church one hour before the service.

Mrs. Barnhart died Wednesday, Aug. 11, 1999, at her home. She was born April 26, 1919, in Lawrenceburg, Tenn., to Edgar and Morgia Pollock McAnally. She was raised in Hohenwald, Tenn., and later attended the University of Tennessee in Memphis nursing school. She worked at Decatur General Hospital and Baugh-Wiley-Smith Hospital, and also helped open a hospital in Hohenwald. She was a published poet and a founding member of Point Mallard Parkway Church of Christ.

She is survived by four sons, John Hills of Colorado Springs, Colo., Phillip Hills of Biloxi, Miss., Stephen Hills of Tampa, Fla., and Rick Barnhart of Decatur; one daughter, Gloria Graham of Decatur; one brother, Edgar Robert McAnally of Lakeland, Fla.; 16 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be John Hills, Stephen Hills, Michael Graham, Matthew Graham, Phillip Hills II, Butch Wiley, Neil Donnelly and George Johnson III.

Robert M. Bloodsaw

Funeral arrangements for Robert M. Bloodsaw, 72, of Green brier, who died Wednesday, Aug. 11, 1999, at Decatur General Hospital, will be announced by Sharpley Funeral Home.

Verlie Bynum

Funeral arrangements for Verlie Bynum, 77, of Hartselle, who died Tuesday, Aug. 10, 1999, at his home, will be announced by Reynolds Funeral Home.

David Stanley Carter
77, upholstery shop owner

Funeral service for David Stanley Carter, 77, of Decatur will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Roselawn Funeral Home with Mack Carter and Jerry Hooper officiating.

Burial will be in Andrew Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at the funeral home.

Mr. Carter died Wednesday, Aug. 11, 1999, at Decatur General Hospital. He was born Jan. 5, 1922, in Cullman County to Pendelton and Berta Mae Wilhite Carter. He was an Army veteran of World War II and was owner and manager of A&R Upholstery.

He is survived by his wife, Thelma Carter; two sons, Randall Carter and Conley Carter, both of Decatur; one daughter, Pansy Carter Webster of Decatur; three brothers, Jack Carter of Birmingham, Mack Carter of Battleground and Warren Carter of Massey; one sister, Ona Holladay of Danville; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Jamie Webster, Zere Carter, Tyler Carter, Hank Lyle, John Lyle, Almon White and Stanley Parker.

William Gilbert Johnson
102, farmer

HARTSELLE -- Morgan County has lost its last surviving veteran of World War I.

William Gilbert Johnson of Somerville, 102, died Wednesday, Aug. 11, 1999, at Summerford Nursing Home in Falkville.

During an interview at his 100th birthday party at the nursing home in 1996, Johnson said he served in the Navy as a seaman guard at Hampton Beach, Va.

"I joined the reserves in Huntsville on June 5, 1918, and was in only a few months when the war ended on Nov. 11. My military career didn't last long."

Funeral will be Friday at 1 p.m. at Antioch United Methodist Church with the Rev. Brady McCullough officiating.

Burial will be in the adjoining cemetery with Peck Funeral Home directing. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 9 at the funeral home. The body will be at the church one hour before the service.

He was born Dec. 10, 1896, in Morgan County to William Thomas Johnson and Francis Elizabeth Stringer Johnson. He was a farmer and a member of the Masonic lodge and Antioch United Methodist Church.

He was the widower of Maude Neill Johnson and the father of the late William Neill Johnson, Robert M. Johnson, Frankie Grantland and Leah Sanders.

He is survived by two sons, John T. Johnson and A.D. Johnson, both of Somerville; two daughters, Mollie Jo Bowling of Somerville and Anna Mary Johnson of Decatur; 11 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be grandsons.

Cora Hall Osborne
101, homemaker

MOBILE -- Funeral for Cora Hall Osborne, 101, of Mobile will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Lovelett Funeral Home with the Rev. Coleman Figgers officiating.

Burial will be in Coffeeville Cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday at 9 a.m. at the funeral home.

Mrs. Osborne died Monday, Aug. 9, 1999, at Beverly Healthcare Center. She was born July 2, 1898, in Coffeeville. She was a homemaker and a member of Union Baptist Church for most of her life.

She is survived by two sons, Walter G. Osborne of Hartselle and Roy Osborne of Mobile; two daughters, Donnie Mae Mickles and Northa Lee Edwards, both of Mobile; one sister Easter Flucker of Coffeeville; 15 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.

Nellie Murphy Owens

HARTSELLE -- Funeral for Nellie Murphy Owens, 77, of Priceville will be Friday at 1 p.m. at Peck Funeral Home with the Rev. Robert Slack and Rev. Mike Thomas officiating.

Burial will be in Walnut Grove Cemetery on Bethel Road. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 9 at the funeral home.

Mrs. Owens died Tuesday, Aug. 10, 1999, at her home. She was born May 24, 1922, in Morgan County to John Marcellus Murphy and Evelyn Lee Murphy. She was a member of the Point Mallard Parkway Baptist Church.

She is survived by two sons, Billy Joe Owens and John Elliot Owens, both of Priceville; two sisters, Jean Clinard of Athens and Louise Clinard of Ardmore; seven grandchildren, five great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.

Pallbearers will be Joe Barber, Gary Blankenship, Carlos Bunnell, Wayne Chambers, John Davis and Floyd Ray McNutt.

Leo C. Patton

Funeral arrangements for Leo C. Patton, 70, of Madison, who died Tuesday, Aug. 10, 1999, at his home, will be announced by Reynolds Funeral Home.
