James Knox Polk

CULLMAN -- James Knox Polk, 83, of Gainesville, Fla., died Sunday, Jan. 16, 2000, at North Florida Special Care Center.
He was born Jan. 26, 1916, in Rogersville and lived in Decatur from 1930 to 1943. He was a member of the Alabama National Guard unit that went to Alaska during World War II and served in the Korean War; he rose from the rank of private to lieutenant colonel. He earned his master's degree from the University of West Florida. He was a Shriner, a charter member of Gulf Breeze Masonic Lodge and a member of Gulf Breeze United Methodist Church, where he sang in the choir. He was the widower of Frances Louise Pearson Polk, to whom he was married for 51 years.
He is survived by his son, James Michael Polk of Gainesville; his half brother, Charles E. Polk of Pensacola, Fla.; and one grandson.
Willie James 'Sporty' Reeve
74, Navy veteran
INGLEWOOD, Calif. -- Memorial service for Willie James "Sporty" Reeve, 74, of Los Angeles, formerly of Decatur, will be Saturday with McCormick Mortuary directing.
Mr. Reeve died Jan. 13, 2000, at Veterans Hospital in Los Angeles. He was born Jan. 28, 1925, in Decatur to Rozina White. His adoptive parents were Willie and Mattie Reeve. He attended Lakeside High School in Decatur and was a Navy veteran.
He is survived by one brother, Bill Jefferson of Orlando, Fla.; three sisters, Mary Emma Jefferson of Decatur, Geraldine Smith of Dayton, Ohio, and Cora Lewis of Detroit.
Zona Merle White
92, piano teacher
Memorial service for Zona Merle White, 92, of Decatur will be announced by Roselawn Funeral Home.
Mrs. White died Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2000, at Sunbridge Care and Rehabilitation in Decatur. She was born Dec. 22, 1907, in Ute, Iowa, to Addie Booher Chase and Louis Herman Chase. She attended Carleton College and taught piano at the University of Minnesota. She also was a master teacher of piano for 50 years in Rapid City, S.D., and was a church organist for First Congregational Church for 50 years.
She was founder of Rapid City Concert Association, and a member of PEO Sisterhood for 60 years and Community Concert Association Board for 40 years. She was honorary director of Rapid City Fine Arts Council and was honored for creative achievement and performance by the city of Rapid City in 1981. Her church honored her with the Zona White Scholarship for outstanding young musicians in South Dakota. She also was honored by South Dakota Music Educators Association with the Distinguished Service Award in 1992.
She is survived by one son, Dr. Richard L. White of Portland, Maine; and two daughters, Jeanette Self of Decatur and Susan Finley of Rapid City.

Mrs. Adams died Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2000, at Athens-Limestone Hospital. She was born April 30, 1915, in Limestone County. She was a homemaker and a member of the Church of Christ. She was the widow of George Alvin Adams and the mother of the late Franklin Adams and Stacey Adams.
She is survived by one son, Charles Hugo Adams of Athens; one daughter, Frances A. Batey of Davison, Mich.; 14 grandchildren; and 28 great-grandchildren.
Grandsons and nephews will be pallbearers.

Mr. Creel died Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2000, at his home. He was born Oct. 28, 1940, in Calera. He was a retired hairstylist and a member of St. Mark's Primitive Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Chris Creel; two sons, Ernest E. Creel Jr. and Shawn Creel, both of Athens; one daughter, Renee Maynard of Athens; one sister, Evelyn Barefield of Calera; one half brother, Kenneth Cost of Calera; one half sister, Susie Sides of Madison; his stepmother, Christine Creel of Huntsville; and four grandchildren.

Mr. Ford died Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2000, at Parkway Medical Center. He was born Nov. 4, 1930, in Cullman County to David Thurman and Lizzie Lattrice Holmes Ford. He was a farmer and member Rock Creek Baptist Church.
He is survived by two brothers, Thomas Edsel Ford of Hartselle and Charles Ford of Oden Ridge; and three sisters, Annie Marlon Dunn, Eloise Wilks and Marie Johnson, all of Decatur.

She is survived by her husband, Hillard Suggs; three sons, Kenny Suggs, Randy Suggs and Ricky Suggs, all of Decatur; her mother, Dorothy McDaniel of Decatur; two brothers, Gerald Turner and Bobby Turner, both of Decatur; one sister, Nancy Allen of Tennessee; and two grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Donny Case, Bobby Suggs, Buster Harris, Marvin Tucker, Brent Murphy and Chad Suggs.
