Williams

Betty Joyce Williams, 69, of Jackson died May 11, 2004 at her residence.

She was a native of Memphis, Tenn. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Jackson. She served as a deaconess of the church and she was a member of the First Presbyterian Women’s Group. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include her husband Willie S. "Sonny" Williams Jr., Jackson; one son, Geary G. Williams, Jackson; one daughter, Bridget Weaver, Jackson; two brothers, Edward Gill, Perdido Beach, Billy Scott, Hermitage, Tenn.; one sister, Dorothy Bunn, Loraine, Ohio; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren.

The service was held May 13 at 11 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church of Jackson. Burial was in the Trinity Memorial Gardens in Jackson. Lathan Funeral Home directed.

Champion

Clara Bell Sheehan Champion, 82, of Pine Hill died May 10, 2004 at her residence.

She was a member of the Pine Hill Baptist Church. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include six sons, John F. Champion, Dickinson, Cornelius Champion Jr., Dixons Mills, Lawrence Champion, Arlington, Ronnie Champion, Henry Champion, both of Thomasville, Hank Champion, Pine Hill; three daughters, Patricia Klug, Sandra F. Champion, both of Pine Hill, Dorothy J. Calvert, Decatur; one brother, Johnny Clifford Sheehan, Orrville; 24 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren.

The service was held May 13 at 11 a.m. at the chapel of O’Bryant Chapel Funeral Home with Rev. Benny Harrison officiating. Burial was in the Kelly Cemetery in Pine Hill.

Active pallbearers were John F. Champion, Cornelius Champion Jr., Lawrence Champion, Ronnie Champion, Hank Champion, Henry Champion and Cornelius Champion III.

King

Hollis King, 57, of Alma died May 18, 2004 in Mobile.

He had worked at Mobile Infirmary Medical Center for many years. He was a United States Army Veteran.

Survivors include two sons, Kevin King, Frankfurt, Germany, Elmer Jones, Marietta, Ga.; one brother, William J. King, Wilmer; one sister, Oreen K. James, Jackson. The service was held May 25 at 11 a.m. at the chapel of Andrews Funeral Home. Burial was in the Antioch African Methodist Episcopal Church Cemetery in Alma.

King

Bernard King, 82, of Thomasville died May 14, 2004 at Thomasville Infirmary.

He had worked as a farmer.

Survivors include three brothers, James King, Thomasville; Ernest King, Chicago, Ill.; L.C. Champion, Sunny South; five sisters, Rosa Marshall, Brighton; Bessie Tate, Estelle Champion, Dorothy Pope, Willodean Harper, all of Thomasville; lifelong mate, Earlean Rowden; four godchildren.

The service was held May 22 at 2 p.m. at the New Hope No. 1 Baptist Church with Rev. James G Curry officiating. Burial was in the New Hope No. 1 Baptist Church Cemetery. Mosley Funeral Home directed.

Estes

Alton Timothy "Festus" Estes, 45, of Coffeeville died May 5, 2004 at his residence.

He had worked as an electrical helper for Edwards Electric Company.

Survivors include his wife, Kelly Estes, Coffeeville; one son, Timothy Allen Estes, Coffeeville; two daughters, April Estes Hayes, Robin Arlene Estes, both of Coffeeville; five brothers, Robert Allen Estes, Creola, Jack O. Estes, Citronelle, Leslie Earl Estes, Saraland, Mack Ray Estes, Coffeeville, Wylie Lee Estes, Jackson; two sisters, Sarah Alice Estes Snider, Eight Mile, Adaline Estes Covington, Citronelle.

The service was held May 7 at 11 a.m. at the West Bend Baptist Church. Burial was in the West Bend Cemetery. Lathan Funeral Home of Jackson directed.

Active pallbearers were Robbie Mauldin, Scott Estes, Shannon Estes, Richard Covington, Kenneth Mott, Laurie Roberts, Cecil Abston, Perry Pickard, Michael Estes and Tony Cox.

Harper

Benjamin Franklin Harper Sr., 79, of Coffeeville died May 23 in Citronelle.

He was a member of the Jones Chapel Church of Christ in Coffeeville. He served as a treasurer of the church. He was a World War II veteran serving in the United States Army as a member of the 159th combat Eng. Battalion. He was a retired self-employed merchant in Coffeeville where he owned and operated the Tombigbee Auto Parts.

Survivors include one son, Benjamin Franklin Harper II, Saraland; three daughters, Diane H. Staley, Denise H. Shepherd, both of Coffeeville, Dorinda H. McCool, Cottondale; one brother, William Harper, Jackson; two sisters, Nancy Harrison, Jackson, Leta Ray Woodham, Daytona Beach, Fla.; 10 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren.

The service was held May 25 at 11 a.m. in the Jones Chapel Church of Christ in Coffeeville. Burial was in the Jones Chapel Church of Christ Cemetery in Coffeeville. Lathan Funeral Home of Jackson directed.

Williams

Ollis Drew Williams, 62, of Grove Hill died May 18, 2004 at his residence.

He was a native of Irvington, Ga. He was a member of Magnolia Assembly of God Church in Grove Hill. He was a truck driver for Billy Barnes Trucking Company.

Survivors include two sons, Roy A. Williams, Grove Hill, James A. Weaver, Chatom; two daughters, Cynthia Dawn Williams, Mileageville, Ga., Darlene Walker, Dickinson; two brothers, Thomas H. Williams, Savannah, Ga., Lonnie M. Williams, Camden, S.C.; three grandchildren.

The service was held May 21 at 11 a.m. at the chapel of Lathan Funeral Home. Burial was in the Magnolia Cemetery off the Allen Road. Active pallbearers were Christopher Hughes, Buddy Hughes, William James, Robert Fore, Bill Turner and Jake Turner.

Hamilton

James Henry Hamilton, 85, a native of Coxheath in Marengo County and a resident of the Merry Wood Nursing Home in Wetumpka for nine years, died May 21, 2004.

He grew up in the logging and sawmilling business and later worked in the shipyards in Mobile until he was drafted into the U.S. Army in the latter part of World War II. He received a medical discharge after having pneumonia and rheumatic fever.

After the war, he became a carpenter and worked in the building business until 1967. He built homes for people all over Choctaw and Marengo counties as well as the Fulton home of a brother, M. C. Hamilton.

At the age of 50 he returned to the logging business and worked in it until he retired at the age of 69.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Louise Hale Hamilton, and a young son.

Survivors include two sons, James Henry Hamilton Jr., Marietta, Ga., and Gerald F. Hamilton, Wetumpka; a daughter, Melanie Hamilton Carroll, Marietta, Ga.; 13 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren; sisters, Carmen Allen and Mary Ezell Hester; and a brother, M. C. Hamilton, Fulton.

The funeral was held May 24 at 11 a.m. at the Sweet Water United Methoidst Church with Revs. Craig Carter and Rick Slingluff officiating. Burial was in the Sweet Water Cemetery.

Active pallbearers were Billy Hamilton, Brandon Horsely, James Carroll, Agnew Hall, Edward Carroll and Dustin Hamilton.

O’Bryant Chapel Funeral Home in Thomasville was in charge of arrangements.

Kirkham

Ruth Annette Smyly Kirkham, 80, of Linden died May 18, 2004 at Bryan W. Whitfield Memorial Hospital.

She was a member of the Demopolis Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include two sons, Billy Lonzo Criswell, Fulton, James Roger Sheffield, Pine Hill; three daughters, Mary Lee Taylor, Roanoke, Linda Annette Etheridge, Selma, Jane Elizabeth Britt, Denham Springs, La; two brothers, Martin Smyly, Satsuma, Wilford Smyly, Pine Hill; one sister, Eloise Harbin, Magnolia; 12 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren.

The service was held May 20 at 2 p.m. at The Magnolia Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Burial was in the Magnolia Church of Latter Day Saints Cemetery.

Active pallbearers were Lynn Criswell, Johnny Criswell, Nathan Britt, Joshua Britt, Mike Harbin, Larry Etheridge and Joe Stockman.

Pritchett

Thomas Leslie Pritchett, 53, of Pine Hill died May 20, 2004 at Thomasville Infirmary.

He was a member of Friendship Baptist Church. He had worked as an electrician at Weyerhaeuser.

Survivors include his wife, Amanda Pritchett, Pine Hill; his mother, Willie Mae Pritchett, Pine Hill; two sons, Thomas Scott Pritchett, Dixons Mills, Daniel Blake Pritchett, Washington, D.C.; two daughters, Patience Renae Flint, Amity Gale Collins, both of Pine Hill; one brother, Bobby Neal Pritchett, Pine Hill; one sister, Claudia Elrod, Pine Hill; one grandson.

The service was held May 23 at 2 p.m. at the chapel of O’Bryant Chapel Funeral Home with Rev. David Walley officiating. Burial was in the Friendship Baptist Church Cemetery in Vineland.

Active pallbearers were Ray Vick, Darron Vick, Kenneth Stockman, Mark Patrick, Victor Driver, Keith Vice and Jerry Ludeman.

Bedwell

Telitha Snodgrass Bedwell, 74, of the Sandflat Community died May 21, 2004.

She was retired from Vanity Fair Mills.

Survivors include her husband, W.V. Bedwell, Sandflat; three sons, Dewayne Bedwell, Sandflat, Dean Bedwell, St. Stephens, Danny Bedwell, Fulton; four daughters, Diane Harrison, Grove Hill, Kay Parker, Faye Smith, Dale Morgan, all of Sandflat; 14 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Mitt and Annie Mae Snodgrass.

The service was Sunday May 23 at 11 a.m. at Good Hope Baptist Church in Grove Hill with Rev. Leon Harrison officiating. Burial was in the Magnolia Lawn Cemetery in Grove Hill. St. Stephens Funeral Home directed.

Pallbearers were John Harrison, Wendell Bedwell, Larry Bedwell, Chad Bedwell, Dannon Bedwell, Daniel Bedwell, Justin Smith and Wesley Morgan. Honorary pallbeares were Walter Snodgrass, Grey Snodgrass, Amos Snodgrass, Johnny Snodgrass, Alex Smith, Rodger Keel, Jessie Ray Baugh, Bobby Haskew, Tony Stacy, Raymond Brodrick, Burl Goodman and Daniel Goodman.

Hicks

Helen McClure Hicks, 80, of Selma died May 20, 2004 at a Montgomery hospital.

Survivors include three daughters, Rose Mary DeRamus, Selma; Ouida Parker, Denise Clark, both of Plantersville; one brother, Perry McClure, Jackson; nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; nephews, nieces, numerous friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Sidney Mitford "Mit" Hicks and her granddaughter, Paige Small, her twin sister, Hazel McClure, her parents, Howard and Mary McClure.

The service was held May 22 at 2 p.m. at the chapel of Lawrence Funeral Home with Revs. Ed Byrom and Mike Golson officiating. Burial was in the Pineview Memory Gardens. Lawrence Funeral Home directed.

Active pallbearers were her grandsons, Dexter DeRamus, Sidney DeRamus, Richard Small, Russell Small, Michael Clark Jr. and Shannon Carter.

Honorary pallbearers were Selmont Senior Saints Bible Study Group and Joy Sunday School Class.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to the Selmont Baptist Church.

Simpson

Billy Drane Simpson, 91, died May 17, 2004 at Lane Memorial Hospital in Zachary. He was a resident of Slaughter, LA.

He was a native of Mississippi and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Baker, La., a lifetime member of the Washington Memorial American Legion Post 36 and a member of Fairfields Masonic Lodge 425, F&AM.

He used to travel long distances with covered wagon groups and made stopovers in Grove Hill so that he could visit with his son Freddie Simpson.

Survivors, in addition to Freddie Simpson, include his wife of 56 years, Grace Lewis Simpson; two daughters, Linda Young, Euless, Texas, Jeannie Farmer, Wesson, Miss.; 10 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

The funeral was held at Rabenhorst Funeral Home in Baton Rouge, La. May 19 with the Rev. Dennis Allen of First Baptist Church of Baker officiating. Burial was in Hillcrest Memorial Gardens in Baker.

Pallbearers were Ty Hare, Scott Farmer, Seth Farmer, Chris Young, Terry Simpson, Brad Armistead, Charles Long, Claude Brock and Roy Firmin.

Allen

Carmen Hamilton Allen, 92, of Sweet Water died June 9, 2004 at Willow Trace Nursing Home.

She was a member of the Sweet Water United Methodist Church. She was a retired elementary school teacher.

Survivors include one brother, M.C. Hamilton, Fulton; one sister, Mary Ezell Hester, Lavaca; numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lemuel Boykin "Pete" Allen, three brothers, W.L. Hamilton, Cecil Hamilton and Henry Hamilton.

The service was held June 12 at 1 p.m. at the Sweet Water United Methodist Church with Revs. Joel Jones and Rick Slingluff officiating. Burial was in the Old Spring Hill Cemetery. O’Bryant Chapel Funeral Home directed.

Pallbearers were Cal Hamilton, Billy Hamilton, Walter Hall, Agnew Hall, Jamie Carroll, Edward Carroll, Doug Hamilton, Tommy Hamilton, Sammy Hamilton, Steve Shellie, Bill Hamilton, Trey Hamilton, Oliver Ezell, Chuck Ezell, Clark Ezell, Bryan Ezell, Dusty Hamilton, Jerry Hamilton, Edward Bradford, Charles Bradford, Don Horseley, Brandon Horseley and Brad Hamilton.

Andrews

Willie Floyd "Pokey" Andrews Sr., 71, of Grove Hill died June 10, 2004 at his residence.

He had worked as a carpenter.

Survivors include three sons, Willie F. Andrews Jr., Ebenezer, Sidney Gordon Andrews, Ronnie James Newton, both of Asbury; two daughters, Sharon Kay Tyson, Biloxi, Miss., Christal Ann Overton, Asbury; one sister, Martha Jane Edge, Dierks, Ark.; 15 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren.

A graveside service was held June 12 at 4:30 p.m. in the Bassett Creek Baptist Church Cemetery. O’Bryant Chapel Funeral Home directed.

Active pallbearers were Randy Alford, Dickey Harvell, Wormey Overton, Keith Harbin, Johnny Alford and Barry Pugh.

Branton

Jerry Coleman Branton, 47, of Mobile died June 10, 2004 in Pascagoula, Miss.

He had worked as a crewman on an offshore supply boat. He was a veteran having served in the United States Navy during the Gulf War.

Survivors include his father, William V. Branton, Mobile, his mother, Rebecca O. Branton, Mobile; one son, Anthony Branton, Mobile; one brother, William D. Branton, Mobile; two sisters, Debbie Sutton, Wichita Falls, Texas, Donna Bloom, Rapid City, S.D.

A graveside service was held June 13 at 3 p.m. in the Kelley Cemetery in Thomasville with Rev. Roger Blackwelder officiating. O’Bryant Chapel Funeral Home directed. Active pallbearers were Christopher Tate, James Richard Breazeale, Kyle Andrews, Don Dubas, David Dubas and Buck Sheffield.

Filby

Marguaritte Bender Filby, 59, of Thomasville died June 11, 2004 at Warren Manor Nursing Home.

She was born in Green ville. She attended New Life Pentecostal Church. She had worked as a truck driver.

Survivors include one son, Kipper Presley, Grove Hill; two daughters, Bertha Nelson, Fulton, Terrie Woods, Thomasville; one sister, Barbara H. Pugh, Thomasville; six brothers, Ronny Bender, Grove Hill, Hamp Bender Jr., Dennis Bender, both of Ft. Deposit, Ricky Bender, Pine Hill, Danny Bender, Dee Bender, both of Kimbrough, seven grandchildren.

The service was held June 11 at 10 a.m. with Rev. Verlon Blackwell officiating. Burial was in the Braggs Cemetery in Braggs, Ala. O’Bryant Chapel Funeral Home directed.

Active pallbearers were Caleb Bender, Adam Bender, Joseph Bender, Levi Bender, Ritch Bender, Tommy Hudson Jr., Daryl Etheridge and Mike Buchanan.

Honorary pallbearers were Paul Newton, Tinky Raybon, Alex Smith, Kenny Robertson and Ledger Morrissette.

Chapman

M.L. Chapman, 78, of the Winn community of Jackson died July 17, 2004 at his daughter’s home in Winn.

He was a member of Berry’s Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church where he served as a trustee. He was also a member of the Bethlehem Masonic Lodge for many years. He was a member of the Winn Volunteer Fire Department. He retired from Great Lakes Steel of Detroit, Mich. and returned to Alabama. He was a World War II Veteran of the United States Army.

Survivors include one son, Melvin Washington, Detroit, Mich.; two daughters, Juanita Nix, Detroit, Mich., Brenda King, Winn; one sister, Christine Smith, Winn; nine grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren.

The service will be held Friday, July 23 at 1 p.m. at Berry’s Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church in Winn. Visitation will be held Thursday, (today), July 22 from Berry’s Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church. Burial will be held at the Berry’s Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church Cemetery. A military ceremony will be performed at graveside. Andrews Funeral Home will direct.

Myrick

Relivia Grey McGilberry Myrick, 47, of Thomasville died July 11, 2004 at Thomasville Infirmary.

She was born in Wilcox County. She was a member of Pineview Baptist Church in Thomasville. She had worked as a nurse.

Survivors include two sons, Blake McGilberry, Brent Myrick, both of Thomasville; one brother, Robbie McGilberry, Arlington; three sisters, Alice Autery, Tina Counselman, both of Thomasville, Ouida McGilberry, Birmingham.

The service was held July 14 at 10 a.m. at the chapel of O’Bryant Chapel Funeral Home with Rev. Larry Darden officiating. Burial was in the Pine Hill Cemetery.

Active pallbearers were Joe Hicks Jr., Johnny McGilberry, Lee McGilberry, Todd McGilberry, Chase Tucker, Ernie McGilberry, Corey Autery, and Jerry Harmon Strickland Jr.

Honorary pallbearers were Morgan Autery, Adam McGilberry, Jeremy Bouler, Chris Knight and Josh Knight.
