Lonnie D. Armstrong
Lonnie Durant Armstrong, age 79, a resident of Georgiana, formerly of Montgomery, died Wednesday, January 16, 2008. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, January 18, 2008 from the chapel of Harrison Funeral Home with the Rev. Andy Till officiating. Interment followed in Sunrise Cemetery with Harrison Funeral Home directing. A visitation was held from noon 'til service time at the funeral home.
Survivors include: cousins, Letha Skinner of Greenville, James Joyner of Madison and many other related cousins.
Phyllis Crum
CRUM, Phyllis Ann, 76, died peacefully at her home in Prattville, AL, on Monday, January 29, 2007, after an extended illness. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Mrs. Crum was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother who is survived by her beloved husband, M. R. “Sam” Crum; one daughter, Robin Crum; one son and daughter-in-law, Bill and Toni Crum; and one granddaughter, Holly L. Peterson, all of Prattville, AL. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests memorial donations be sent to Wiregrass Hospice, 2401 Fairlane Drive, Montgomery, AL 36116.
Samuel A. Granade
Samuel Andrew Granade, age 89, died January 19, 2008 at John Knox Nursing Home, Montgomery. A memorial service was held at First Baptist Church Stakley Chapel at 2 p.m. Tuesday, January 22 with Dr. Dale Duff, the Rev. Kenny Hoomes and the Rev. Tom Randall officiating. Visitation for family and friends followed the memorial service in the parlor of Stakley Hall. He is survived by: his wife of 65 years, Rubilaw Ray Granade; one son, Dr. Samuel Ray Granade (Deranda) of Arkadelphia, Ark.; two grandsons, Dr. Stephen Riley Granade of Madison (Misty) and Dr. Samuel Andrew Granade II (Joy) of Kansas City, Ks., and three great-grandchildren, Eli, LIza and Sam. Dr. Sam Granade served as chaplain in the 13th Airborne Division during WW II. He graduated from Howard College (Samford University) in Birmingham and The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Ky. While at Howard College, he pastured several north Alabama churches and for 25 years the Evergreen Baptist Church in Evergreen.
During his retirement, he was interim pastor of 15 Alabama Baptist churches, including First Baptist Church of Greenville.
He also established and served as director of the Department of the Department of Church Minister Relations at the Alabama Baptist State Board of Missions. Dr. Granade served four years on the Executive Committee of the Southern Baptist Convention.
Pallbearers were Dr. Stephen Riley Granade, Dr. Samuel Andrew Granade II, Charles Jackson Granade Jr., Harvey Granade Little, Dr. Larry Jackson, John Ammons, Dr. Samuel Mason and Larry Hardesty. In lieu of flowers memorials can be made to The Sam and Ribilaw Granade Memorial Scholarship Fund of The Baptist Foundation of Alabama, P.O. Box 241227, Montgomery, AL 36124. Cheryl Baxter
BAXTER, Cheryl Cantrell, 51, a resident of Prattville, AL went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, January 5, 2007, after a courageous battle with cancer. Her family extends a warm welcome to attend her celebration of life and home going to be held on Tuesday, January 9, 2007, at 10:00 a.m., from the Chapel of Prattville Memorial, with Pastor Chip Smith and Dr. Noel Walker officiating. Burial will follow in Ft. Mitchell National Cemetery in Seale, AL at 2:00 p.m., with Prattville Memorial Chapel directing. Cheryl was born September 11, 1955 in Berlin, N.H. and raised in Dayton, OH. She graduated from West Carrollton High School, Class of 1974. After moving to Prattville, AL in 1998, she became an active member of Glynwood Baptist Church. Throughout her illness, she never failed to give God the glory and to pray for her loved ones. She was preceded in death by her father, Charles F. Cantrell. She is survived by her beloved husband of 30 years, Lt. Col. Roger M. Baxter, III (USAF Ret’d), Prattville, AL; two daughters and sons-in-law, 1st Lt. Tami and 1st Lt. Dee Imlay, (USAF), Wichita Falls, TX, Kori and Stephen Hodum, Prattville, AL; one son, Lcpl. Nathan L. Baxter (USMC), Prattville, AL; and her beloved dog, “Abbi.” She is also survived by her mother and step-father, Carol and Gary Page, Medway, OH; one sister, Cinda (Dan) Parish; two brothers, Charles (Cynthia) Cantrell and Craig (Annette) Cantrell, all of Dallas, TX; her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Roger and Ruth Baxter, West Carrollton, OH; a sister-in-law, Becky (Rodney) Lucas, Rudolph, OH, and nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends too numerous to mention but nevertheless loved. Her family extends appreciation to all her friends and family members around the world for their phone calls, cards, and prayers sent for her recovery. They are also most grateful for her presence here on earth and rejoices in the knowledge that she is with The Lord and reunited with those who have gone before. William Edwin Whiddon
William Edwin "Ed" Whiddon, 82, a resident of Rutledge, died December 30, 2007. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, January 5, 2008 from the Chapel Hill Baptist Church with the Rev. Chris Moses, the Rev. Mike Moses and the Rev. Joe Bradford officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Mr. Whiddon will lie in repose at the church one hour prior to the services.
Whiddon is survived by his wife, Mary Whiddon of Rutledge; son, Chuck (Shirley) Whiddon of Honoraville; stepdaughter, Donna (Dennis) Szeszulski of Marietta, Ga.; sisters, Frances Adams of Greenville, Floyce Owen of Montgomery and Joyce Pierce of Montgomery; brothers, Riley Whiddon and Wilson Whiddon, both of Honoraville; two grandchildren, Christopher Whiddon and Stacey Whiddon; two step-grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. Flowers will be accepted, or donations may be made to the Chapel Hill Baptist Church Cemetery Fund.
Howard and Aline CROWE
CROWE, William Howard, 88, and Dorothy Aline Crowe, 78, residents of Prattville, AL, died unexpectedly on Monday, September 12, 2005, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, September 15, 2005, at 2:00 p.m., from Pine Level United Methodist Church, with Reverend Ray Bass officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery, with Prattville Memorial Chapel directing. Mr. Crowe honorably served his country during World War II as a Veteran of the United States Army. Mrs. Crowe was an active member of the Ladies Auxiliary of Pine Level United Methodist Church Cemetery. They recently celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary. They were preceded in death by one son, William Gary Crowe. They are survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Gayle and John Norris; one son and daughter-in-law, Richard “Ricky” and Jimmie Lee Crowe, all of Wetumpka, AL; five grandchildren, Brian Crowe, Matt Crowe, Jackie Coltrain, Rusty Crowe and William Norris; one sister-in-law, Lucille Tatum, and one niece, Teresa Driver, both of Prattville, AL. The family will receive friends at Prattville Memorial Chapel on Wednesday evening from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m.
Hilda K. Johnson
Hilda K. Johnson, 87, a longtime resident of Camden, died January 6, 2008 after a long illness. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, January 8, 2008 at the Camden United Methodist Church in Camden. Graveside services were at 1:30 p.m. in the River Ridge Cemetery in Franklin in Monroe County on Highway 41 with Dunklin & Daniels Funeral Home of Camden directing.
The family received friends on Tuesday, January 8, 2008 from 10 a.m. to service time in the fellowship hall of the Camden UMC with Dunklin & Daniels FH of Camden directing.
Mrs. Johnson was preceded in death by her husband of 28 years, Strother Gregg Johnson; her second husband of five years, Dr. James Wallace Johnson, and a brother, James Lennon Kelly. She is survived by: three sons, Strother Gregg Johnson Jr. (Cilla), Andrew Harrison Johnson (Lindsay) and Frank Kelly Johnson (Debbie), six grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, one sister, three sisters-in-law and many nieces and nephews.
She was a 1941 graduate of Montevallo College and a schoolteacher and homemaker for many years in both Monroe and Wilcox counties. She belonged to Camden Methodist Church and was a member and teacher of the Wilella Burford Sunday School class. She was an active member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Fleur de Lis Garden Club of Camden. Mrs. Johnson loved Camden, her longtime home, and its residents. She also loved the beauty of nature in Alabama. The family asks in lieu of flowers donations be made to the American Bible Society or the Alzheimer's Association.
Mary McCall
Mary McCall (Lil Mary) died Tuesday, January 1, 2008 at Crowne Health Care in Greenville. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, January 5, 2008 from the chapel of Hudson Funeral Service with the Rev. Michael Foster officiating. Burial followed in Magnolia Cemetery with Hudson Funeral Services of Greenville directing.
Mrs. McCall is survived by a son, Charlie Hawkins Jr.; a nephew, J.T. (Carrie) Hawkins, a devoted former daughter-in-law, Janett McClain; a niece, Shirley Marshall; four grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and 11 great-great-grandchildren, along with a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
James Henry Gorum
James Henry "Jimmy" Gorum, age 56, of Brewton, died Saturday, January 5, 2008 at a local hospital after a brief illness. Funeral services will be Friday, January 11, 2008 at 2 p.m. at Brooks Baptist Church with the Rev. Chad Cooper officiating. Interment will follow in Brooks Baptist Church Cemetery with Williams Memorial Chapel Funeral Home of Brewton directing. He will lie in repose one hour prior to service time at the church. Visitation will be Thursday, January 10 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Williams Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, Inc.
Mr. Gorum, a native of Covington County, was a longtime resident of McKenzie before moving to Brewton in 1986. He was an honorary member of the Brewton Lion's Club, an avid, die-hard Auburn and T.R. Miller fan, and was a member of the Appleton Free Will Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Clayton and Syble Campbell Gorum and a brother, Edward Gorum.
He is survived by: a sister, Charlotte (Mike) Powell of Bay Minette; three brothers, Bobby (Glenda Jane) Gorum of Omaha, Neb., Shelby (Shirley) Gorum of Gantt and Jerry (Donna) Gorum of Red Level; six nieces, Leigh Powell, Selena Furr, Mendy McKenzie, Wendy Bryant and Delissa Gorum; four nephews, LaDon Gorum, Bill Gorum, Johnny Gorum and Jeffrey Gorum; several great-nieces and nephews, and special friends, Dewey, Keith and Chad Cooper and Frank Barnes.
Linda Fails McCoy
Linda Fails McCoy, 56, died January 24, 2008, following a lengthy illness. Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, February 2, at Mr. Zion Baptist Church in Greenville with Hudson Funeral Services directing. She leaves to cherish her memory two sons, Cedric Harris of New Market and Errick Coleman of Toledo, Ohio; a daughter, Nathania Walters of Lapine; mother, Gertrude Fails Payne of Greenville; one sister, three brothers, four grandchildren, three aunts, three uncles, a special friend, Noah Mitchell of Montgomery and a host of other relatives and friends.
