Burial will follow, with full military honors, in Prattville Memory Gardens, with Prattville Memorial Chapel directing. “Norb,” as he was known by his friends, was born in Dunkirk, NY to Clarence and Anna (Schrantz) Ostrye. He was an only child. He attended Sacred Heart Church and school. He played sports, the guitar, and violin, and worked on his father’s grape farm after school. He joined the Army Air Corps in 1942; served his country honorably for 30 years, and was well decorated before retiring from the United States Air Force in 1972. His exciting military career as a B-17 pilot and electronic intelligence officer, was recently published and is available online at: www.trafford.com/06-1367 A MEMOIR: PILOT DUTY WWII AND BEYOND.
Norb was also very active as an amateur radio operator during his military days known as W4-LUM “Little Uncle Mike.”
One of his favorite military assignments was Alaska. While he was there he took advantage of the phenomenal hunting and fishing. He enjoyed the beauty of the Alaskan frontier and was inspired to capture it on canvas. Consequently, he studied and became a well-respected oil painting artist. He was also a gifted teacher of oil painting, water skiing, basketball, computers, just about anything. He was always generous to share his talents and abilities with his family and others who were interested. He was an exemplary father and husband, tender, kind, and gentle, yet a man's man.
After three military tours in Montgomery, he and his wife, Helen, decided to settle among old friends in the Montgomery area. They built their "retirement" home and got busy.
They started a construction business building both residential and commercial. They also helped with the construction of his church, St. Joseph's in Prattville, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton in Millbrook, and Our Lady of Guadalupe in Elmore.
He and a close friend developed, built, marketed, and installed the Nation's most efficient solar hot water collector, as tested by strict government regulations.
He also volunteered as the City Manager of Millbrook bringing the community from a near bankrupt condition to a city with a balanced budget. His efforts brought vital infrastructure development, purchased new police cars, fire trucks, and a telemetry equipped ambulance.
He and Helen traveled to numerous places across the country in their RV, making many friends along the way. Norb also worked as the treasurer of the International Airstream Club.
He is survived by Helen, his beloved wife of more than 60 years; his children, Ken, Tricia, and Kevin of Alabama, and Mark of Oklahoma; ten grandchildren, and five great grandchildren. Pallbearers will be Members of the Millbrook Police Department and the United States Air Force Honor Guard.
While it is customary to wear black at a funeral, it was Norb's stated desire that his funeral be a celebration. Colorful attire is welcome. A visitation will be held at Prattville Memorial Chapel on Sunday evening, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. with a recitation of the Rosary at 7:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be contributed to the building fund at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church, P.O. Box 479 Elmore, AL 36025.
