Alvin D. Sawyer Sr.
MEXIA - Alvin Douglas Sawyer Sr., a former mail carrier with the U.S. Postal Service, died Monday at a hospital in Monroeville. He was 89.
Sawyer, a native of Monroe County, lived in Mexia and was a member of Mexia Baptist Church.
He had worked as a school bus driver for the Monroe County Board of Education.
Survivors include one son, Alvin Douglas Sawyer Jr. of Mexia; one sister, Irene Sawyer Thames of Frisco City, Ala.; and one grandson.
Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. today at Monroe Chapel Funeral Home in Monroeville. Services are set for 10 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Mexia Baptist Cemetery.

Clifford O. Maness Jr.
EXCEL - Clifford Osman Maness Jr., a saw operator with Georgia Pacific in Monroeville, died Wednesday at his Excel home. He was 39.
A native of Wilcox County, Maness was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Camden, Ala.
Survivors include his wife, Lynne Maness of Excel; his parents, Ernestine and Clifford Maness Sr. of Excel; a son, Richard Chad Maness of Excel; a daughter, Kelly Lynne Maness of Excel; three brothers, Jimmy Vick, Mike Vick and Phil Vick, all of Camden; and four sisters, Trudy Dunnam of Camden, Caralie Tait of Monroeville, Carly Hinson of Excel and Shirley Blankenship of Prattville, Ala.
Services are set for 10 a.m. today at Monroe Chapel Funeral Home in Monroeville, with burial at Reaves Chapel Memorial Cemetery in Camden.

Madie I. Helton
PETERMAN - Madie Inez Raines Helton, a homemaker and a lifelong resident of the Peterman area, died Wednesday at a local nursing facility. She was 82.
Survivors include her daughter, June McPherson of Monroeville, Ala.; two sisters, Margie Helton of Pensacola and Ruth Beasley of Escondido, Calif.; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be at Johnson Funeral Home in Monroeville today from 9 a.m. until services begin at 11 a.m. Burial will be at Rumbley Cemetery.

Bertha C. Weaver
MONROEVILLE - Bertha C. Weaver, a Monroeville homemaker and a member of Mineola Baptist Church, died Wednesday at a local nursing facility.
Mrs. Weaver, 88, was a native of Uriah, Ala.
Survivors include two daughters, Margaret Harper of Monroeville and Barbara Ward of Excel, Ala.; four sons, David Russell Weaver of South Charleston, Ohio, Robert D. Weaver of Castleberry, Ala., Roy A. Weaver of Ollie, Ala., and William A. Weaver of Palatka, Fla.; two sisters, Jeanie Merchant of Mobile and Nettie Weaver of Frisco City, Ala.; 15 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and 10 great-great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be at Johnson Funeral Home in Monroeville today from 5 to 8 p.m. The funeral is set for 2 p.m. Saturday at Min eola Baptist Church, with burial at Mineola Cemetery.

Sammie L. Cooper
PEARLAND, Texas - Sammie Latrell Cooper, a native of Laurel, Miss., died Monday. She was 53.
Mrs. Cooper recently had moved to Pearland from Matthews, La. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Friendswood, Texas.
Survivors include her husband, Roger Dayle Cooper Jr. of Pearland; her parents, Inez and Sam Steward Jr. of Longview, Texas; three sons, Lance Cooper of Corpus Christi, Texas, Tobin Cooper of Fort Worth, Texas, and John Cooper of Thibodeaux, La.; two sisters, Frances Swaggerty of Baton Rouge, La., and Tara Hinson of Longview.
Graveside services are scheduled for 10 a.m. today at Gilbertown (Ala.) Cemetery, with Phillips Funeral Home of Gilbertown in charge.

Carl R. Goulet
EL PASO, Texas - Carl R. Goulet, an engineer who retired from Teledyne Continental Motors in Mobile, died Nov. 25. He was 72.
Goulet, a native of Muskegon, Mich., resided in El Paso for six years. He was a U.S. Navy veteran.
Survivors include his wife, Nancy Goulet; seven sons, Michael Goulet, Douglas Goulet, Thomas Goulet, Timothy Goulet, David Goulet, James Goulet and William Goulet; three stepsons, the Rev. Nicholas Dotson, Matthew Dotson and John Dotson; his mother, Bertha Goulet; and two sisters, Geri Clark and Deloris Anderson.
A memorial service is set for 12:15 p.m. Saturday at St. Ignatius Catholic Church in Mobile.
Memorials may be made to the Hospice of El Paso; or the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston.

DEACON 'SAM' ABRAMS
STOCKTON - Funeral services will be held Saturday for Deacon Charlie "Sam" Abrams, 75, of Stockton.
The Stockton native died Friday, Nov. 27, 1998.
Abrams is survived by his wife, Willie Mae Abrams of Stockton; three daughters, Lois Graves and Demetrice Jackson, both of Stockton, and Minnie Wright of New York; and one son, Bennie Bonner of Pensacola.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Greater St. John Baptist Church in Stockton. His body will lie in state for one hour prior to the services. Pastor P.M. Waller will officiate.
Burial will follow in Robinson Cemetery in Stockton.
Baldwin Community Chapel Funeral Home of Bay Minette is handling the arrangements.
