Manly Tommie
Funeral services for Manly Tommie, 75, were held on Sunday, April 16, 2000, at Brown Service Bessemer Chapel, with Rev. Harry Gulledge officiating.
Burial followed at Cedar Hill Cemetery, with Brown Service Bessemer directing.
Tommie was born on Sept. 28, 1924, in Bessemer. He grew up in McCalla, graduating from Bessemer High School. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He graduated from the University of Alabama with a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering. He worked for U.S. Steel Corp. in Fairfield in its Raw Materials Engineering Department as project engineer from 1953-1963, working in the designing, detailing, and assisting in installation of various material processing projects.
He worked for the National Aeronautial and Space Administration in Huntsville as an aerospace engineer from 1963-1967, working in research and development of the high energy rate of forming exotic metals that were to be used in Saturn V Boosters designed to lift the moon rocket from the earth.
Having developed a strong interest in foundry type work while at U.S. Steel and NASA, he worked at Jones Foundry Co. in Bessemer from 1967-1975. He and his wife, June Tommie, then started their own foundry in November 1975 in Thorsby, under the name of Tommie Corp., where he was serving as chairman and chief executive officer.
Tommie served two terms on the Thorsby Town Council and was past president of the Chilton County Manufacturing Association. He was also a member of the Cast Metals Association and the American Foundryman's Society. He was an active member of Greystone Golf and Country Club, as well as Chace Lake Country Club.
He died on April 14, 2000.
Survivors include his wife, June Tommie, Birmingham; one daughter, Peggy Franklin, Pelham; one son, John Tommie, Pelham; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and one cousin.
Howard O. Bates, Sr.
Funeral services for Howard O. Bates, Sr., 73, California, formerly of Clanton, was held Tuesday, April 18, 2000, at the Agee Brothers Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Charles B. Jones officiating.
Burial was in Cross Road Baptist Church Cemetery in Verbena with Agee Brothers Funeral Home directing.
Bates was born on Feb. 26, 1927, to the late Constant T. Price and Mary L. Bates. He died on April 8, 2000, in California.
He is survived by a wife, Bernice Bates; two daughters, Dian Conner and Cheryl James; two sons, Howard O. Bates, Jr., and Michael Bates, all of California; one sister, Annie D. Gill, Clanton; two brothers, Allie S. Cottrell, Clanton, and Herbert Price, St. Louis, Mo.
Brandon Wayne Bryant
Funeral services for Brandon Wayne Bryant, age one, Billingsley, will be held at Unity Baptist Church on Friday, April 21, 2000, at 2 p.m., with Rev. Keith Edwards officiating.
Burial will follow at Chestnut Creek Baptist Church Cemetery in Verbena, with Martin Funeral Home directing.
Visitation will be held at Martin Funeral Home Chapel on Thursday, April 20, 2000, from 5-8 p.m.
The baby was born on June 10, 1998, in Shelby County, the son of Richard and Wendy Bryant. He died at Children's Hospital on April 19, 2000.
Survivors include the father, Richard Bryant, Billingsley; his mother, Wendy Headley Bryant, Billingsley; one sister, Kaitlyn Bryant, Billingsley; one grandfather, Lake Headley, Clanton; two grandmothers, Brenda Loomis, Verbena, and Ruby Bryant, Clanton; one step-grandfather, Linwood Loomis, Verbena; three great-grandparents, Margaret Edwards and John Edwards, both of Verbena, and Virgil Headley, Clanton; and one great-great-grandparent, Readdie Mae Cox, Coffeeville.
Thomas Fischer
Funeral services for Thomas Edward Fischer, 71, Plantersville, will be held on Saturday, April 22, 2000, at the Plantersville Baptist Church with Rev. Michael Golson officiating.
Burial will follow in Jones Baptist Cemetery with Lawrence Funeral Home directing.
Fischer died on Thursday, April 20, 2000, at his residence.
Active pallbearers include nephews Larry Jones, Johnny Jones, Eddie Jones, Jerry Atchison, Barry Ousley, and Don Tullos. Honorary pallbearers include the deacons of Plantersville Baptist Church and retired National Guard members from the Selma unit.
The family will receive friends at Lawrence Funeral Home in Selma from 6-8 p.m. on Friday.
Survivors include his wife, Mabel O. Fischer, Plantersville; one daughter, Rebecca Blair, Plantersville; one son, Tommy Fischer, Plantersville; and four grandchildren.
Bernice McNeil Bolling
Funeral services for Mrs. Bernice McNeil Bolling, 87, Thorsby, formerly of Georgiana, were held at Harrison Funeral Home Chapel in Greenville at 11 a.m. on Monday, April 17, 2000, with Rev. Harry Gulledge of Thorsby First Baptist Church officiating.
Burial followed at Providence Methodist Church Cemetery in Georgiana with Harrison Funeral Home directing.
Survivors include three sons, Bill Bolling, San Antonio, Texas, Norman Bolling, Satsuma, and Neal Bolling, Sheridan, Ind.; three daughters, Doris Bolling, Greenville, and Shelby Dowda and Nelda Headley, both of Thorsby; two brothers, Rufus McNeil, Georgiana, and Floyd McNeil, Greenville; four sisters, Bertie Mae McNaughton and Virginia McIntyre, both of Georgiana, Bertha Black, Semmes, and Margie Middleton, Saraland; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, James. H. Bolling.
Dora Pauline Durham
Graveside services for Dora Pauline Durham, 83, Jemison, will be held on Wednesday, April 26, 2000, at 3 p.m. at Mars Hill Baptist Cemetery in Jemison, with Dr. William Earl Short officiating and Martin Funeral Home directing.
Durham was born on Oct. 28, 1916, in Texas, the daughter of the late Hubbard S. and Dora Mable Young. She was an EKG technician. She died at Chilton Medical Center on April 22, 2000.
Survivors include two daughters, Judy S. Posey, Jemison, and Wanda Lee, Lubbock, Texas; two sons, Doyle R. Schneider, Lubbock, Texas, and Roger J. Schneider, Fredrica, Del.; one brother, Alvin Young, Post, Texas; two sisters, Gladys Womack, Medina, Texas, and Sally Cook, Idalou, Texas; 13 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Betty Jo Smith
Services for Mrs. Betty Jo Smith, 68, of Jemison will be Wedneday, April 26, 2000, at 2 p.m. at Union Springs Baptist Church with the Rev. Terry Smith and the Rev. J.W. Shaw officiating.
Burial will be in the adjoining cemetery with Martin Funeral Home directing.
Smith was born on April 19, 1932, in Bibb County, the daughter of the late Siebert Martin and Mattie Lee McGee. She was a housewife. She died at Chilton Medical Center in Clanton on April 23, 2000.
Survivors include her husband, Willard C. Smith, Jemison; two sons, Barry V. Smith, Rome, Ga., and Karl W. Smith, Clanton; two sisters, Mrs. Bonnie Roland, Birmingham, and Mrs. Alice McClain, Montgomery; a brother, Steve McGee, Huntsville; and two grandchildren.
