Gale Rice

TUSCALOOSA - Gale Rice, age 48, died October 12, 2001 at VA Medical Center in Birmingham. Arrangements will be announced later by Wills' Funeral Service.

Cecer Williams

GREENSBORO - Cecer Williams, age 79, of 94 Dove Lane, died October 12, 2001, at his residence. Services will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, Mt. Moriah Baptist Church with Rev. Robert Jones officiating. Burial will follow in church cemetery with Washington-Paige-Rollins' Mortuary of Green sboro directing.

James Thomas

GREENSBORO - James Thomas, age 67, of 1204 Wabash Street, died October 15, 2001, at Hale County Hospital. Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday, Rising Star Baptist Church with Rev. Freddie Robertson officiating. Burial will follow in Green sboro City Cemetery with Washington-Paige-Rollins' Mortuary of Green sboro directing. The body will lie in state 30 minutes prior to service.

Viola Powell

EUTAW - Viola Powell, age 101, died October 14, 2001, at Park Manor Nursing Home in Northport. Services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Chapel of Gandy Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Pipper Cemetery with Gandy Funeral Home of Eutaw directing.

Martha Jane Jenkins

TUSCALOOSA - Martha Jane Jenkins, age 66, of 1724 16th Ave. East, died October 17, 2001 at her residence. Graveside services will be held 12 noon Saturday, Tuscaloosa Memorial Park with Rev. Hugh Palmer officiating and Heritage Chapel Funeral Home directing. The body will lie in state at the funeral home one hour prior to service.

Her father, Ross Jenkins and mother, Jennie Jenkins, preceded her in death.

Survivors include sisters, Peggy Fuller and brother, Jimmy Jenkins.

Pallbearers will be Ken Jenkins, Matt Jenkins, Joe Fuller, Jeff Fuller, Keith Jenkins and Larry Patton.

Honorary pallbearers are doctors and nurses of DCH Cancer Center.

Mattie Lou Hindman

FAYETTE - Mattie Lou Hindman, age 94, died October 17, 2001 at Fayette Medical Center Long Term Care. Services will be 11 a.m. today, Nelson Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Ken Hindman (grandson), Bro. Ryan Musgrove and Bro. Joe Cotton officiating. Burial will follow in Weslely Chapel Cemetery with Nelson Funeral Home in Fayette.

Her husband, Esker Hindman; daughters, Genna Lovelace and Charlotte Hallmark; sons, Erskine Hindman and Hulon Hindman preceded her in death.

Survivors include daughters, Eva (Freddy) Yerby and Martha (J. R.) Jones all of Northport and Clara Dean Ary of Fayette; sons, Ruell (Wilodean) Hindman of Belk and Lewis (Jane) Hindman; 20 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren and nine great great grandchildren.

She was a lifelong resident of Fayette County and a member of Grace Baptist Church.

Pallbearers will be grandsons.

Cassie Mae Gilbert

FORKLAND - Cassie Mae Gilbert, age 62, died October 10, 2001, at U.A.B. Hospital in Birmingham. Services will be held Saturday, October 20, 2001 at 1 p.m. from the Lloyd Chapel Baptist Church, Rev. Clayborn May, pastor, Rev. Robert Davis, officiating. Burial will follow in church cemetery with Larkin and Scott Funeral Directors of Demopolis directing.

Don Henry Flynn, Jr.

FAYETTE - Don Henry Flynn, Jr., age 50, of 6577 Highway 107, died October 17, 2001, at Fayette Medical Center. Services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, Norwood Chapel. Burial will follow in Mt. Vernon United Methodist Cemetery with Norwood Funeral Home of Fayette directing. Visitation will be 6-9 tonight at the funeral home.

Claude E. Davis

ROCHESTER, N.Y. - Claude E. Davis, age 52, formerly of Tuscaloosa, died October 13, 2001, at Park Ridge Hospital in Rochester. Services will be 11 a.m., Saturday, Pleasant Grove Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Beautiful Zion Church Cemetery with Williams Service Funeral Home directing. The body will be open for public viewing on Friday, at the funeral home from 12-6 p.m. and will be placed in the church one hour prior to service time.

Jewell Hollingsworth Crotwell

BESSEMER - Jewell Hollingsworth Crotwell, 78, died October 16, 2001. Services will be held Friday, October 19, 2001 at 10 a.m. at Brown Service Funeral Home. Rev. Jim Harrison is officiating. Burial will follow in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Bessemer with Brown Service Funeral Home directing.

Her husband, W.H. Crotwell, Sr. and her grandson, Alex Harrison Crotwell, precede her in death.

Survivors include her son, William H. Crotwell and wife Lynette; grandson, Alan Crotwell; granddaughter, Ashley Crotwell; also survived by several nieces and nephews.

She was a long time member of First United Methodist Church in Bessemer, Ala. She was a loving mother and grandmother and she will be greatly missed.

Pallbearers will be Frank Smelley, Larry Turner, Ricky Turner, Craig French, Clark French, Larry Fosberg, and Pat Riley.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to First United Methodist Church in Bessemer.

Dr. Mary Edna Anders

NORTHPORT - Dr. Mary Edna Anders, died October 18, 2001, at DCH Regional Medical Center. A memorial service will be planned for this weekend with Heritage Chapel Funeral Home directing.

Rufus Williams, Jr.

TUSCALOOSA - Rufus Williams, Jr., age 23, 684 Brooksdale Drive, died October 15, 2001, in Douglasville, Georgia. Funeral services will be held at St. Mark AME Church on Sunday at 3:00 p.m. The Rev. David Sylvester will officiate. Burial will follow in Cedar Oak Memorial Park with Rollins' Mortuary directing. The body will lie in state at the church one hour prior to services.

Survivors include parents, Rufus and Nettie Williams; children, Christopher and Jalan Williams; grandparents, Etta Mae Hurst and Albert Williams; fiance' LeKisha Madison all of Tuscaloosa.

Mr. Williams was a 1996 graduate of Central High School and attended Shelton State Community College. He had a love of sports and was well loved by all.

Annie C. "Nanny" Shelton

TUSCALOOSA - Annie C. "Nanny" Shelton, age 96, died October 19, 2001 at DCH Regional Medical Center. Services will be held Monday, October 22, 2001 at Shackleford Funeral Home in Collinwood, Tenn. at 11:00 a.m. Rev. Ed Lopp will officiate. Visitation is tonight at Memory Chapel Funeral Home from 7-9 p.m.; Sunday night from 6-8 p.m. at Shackleford Funeral Home in Collinwood, Tenn. and one hour prior to services.

She is preceded in death by her father J. C. Creecy, mother, Hannah Creecy, husband, Oscar Shelton, daughter Beatrice Shelton and granddaughter Donnis Whaley.

Survivors include daughters Berniece (Loyd) Russell, Tuscaloosa; Reba Whaley, Prattville, Ala. grandchildren, Oscar (Rhonda) Russell and Martha (Rondal) Turner of Cottondale; Teresa (Scott) Mayfield of Moundville; Ashley (Chris) Sanford of Millbrook, Ala. great-grandchildren Kevin and Lindsey Turner; Mandy and Allison Russell of Cottondale; Kelsey, Taylor and Colby Mayfield of Moundville; Britney and Tiffany Whaley of Laconia, N.H.

Pallbearers will be great nephews.

Honorary pallbearers are neighbors and friends of Peach Grove and the Cottondale Community, Dr. Hinton, Dr. Young and staff of DCH Cancer Center; Dr. McCormack and staff of Internal Medicine; staff of 7 South of DCH; Beth Sims and Seton Home Health Care; Skyland Baptist Church.

Nathan Reaves

MOULTON - Nathan Reaves, 24, of 446 Co. Road 65, died October 18, 2001 on Co. Road 236 in Moulton. Services will be held at Lawrence Funeral Home, October 21, 2001 at 2 p.m. Rev. Mitch Smith and Rev. Mark Wakefield will officiate. Burial will follow in Moulton Memory Garden. Visitation will be from 6-9 p.m. tonight at Lawrence Funeral Home.

Survivors include his son, Elijah Reaves, Moulton; sisters, Lori White, Tuscaloosa and Missy Boner, Smyrna, Tenn.; brothers, Thomas Reaves, Moulton, Cliff Garner, Tuscaloosa, Gary White, Tuscaloosa, Todd Appleton, Moulton, Scott Appleton, Moulton; father, Jimmy Reaves and step-mother, Edith, Tuscaloosa; mother, Kay Appleton and step-father, Ricky, Moulton; grandparents, Avon Hallmark, Town Creek, Ala, Celia Reaves, Muscles Shoals, Ala; step-grandmother, Mary Luffman, Smyrna, Tenn.; grandfather, James Mason, Cherokee; great-grandmother, Hyacinth Landers, Town Creek, Ala; God mother, Charlotte Whitlock.

He was a member of Hillsboro Baptist Church, Bankhead Beagle Club, Rut-N-Buc Hunting Club, a former Hatton Volunteer Fire Fighter, and a Deputy for Lawrence County Sherriff's Department.

Pallbearers will be Scott Christy, Franklin Heaps, Seth Hagen, David Sizemore, Amard Martin, and Chad Pate.

Honorary pallbearers are Area Law Enforcement Officers.

Ruben B. Laney

NORTHPORT - Ruben B. Laney, born January 10, 1908, died October 19, 2001 at Northport Hospital DCH. Graveside services will be held Sunday at 2:00 p.m. at Tuscaloosa Memorial Park with Rev. Michael Powell officiating with Sunset Funeral Home directing. Visitation is tonight 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Sunset Funeral Home.

He was a loving father and grandfather and loved very much by all his family and anyone who knew him.

He was preceded in death by his wife Euzola Laney and wife Julia Laney, three brothers, Haynes, Milton and Roy, and one sister Elsie Tilley.

He was retired from the University of Alabama Cabinet Shop after many years.

Survivors include daughter Rebecca Beck (Lofton); grandchildren, Diane Falls (Barry) Northport; Robbie Jo Bellsnyder, Fayette; Steve Morrison (Letha), West Blocton; and Judy Wyres (Newel) Tuscaloosa. Eleven great-grandchildren and six great-great grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Barry Falls, Newel Wyres, Steve Morrison, Bruce Morrison, Wes Mosley and Brad Noland.

Honorary pallbearers are friends and co-workers U of A, Dr. Stephen Browne, Dr. Anand Pandey, staff of Northport DCH, Dr. George Nunn, PCU nurses.
