Leonard Breckenridge (Breck) Barnes, III
TUSCALOOSA - Leonard Breckenridge (Breck) Barnes, III, 57, died at home on Wednesday, December 19th after a long illness. The funeral service will be held at Christ Episcopal Church on Friday, December 21st at 11:00 a.m. with The Rev. Michael Wyckoff presiding, followed by a graveside service at Tuscaloosa Memorial Park. Heritage Chapel Funeral Home is directing.
Breck was born in Paducah, Kentucky but lived in Tuscaloosa all of his life. He was a 1962 graduate of Tuscaloosa High School and graduated with a degree in Business Administration from Livingston University in 1967. He was honorably discharged in 1971 from the U.S. Marine Corp Reserve achieving the rank of Sargent. Breck was co-owner of Barnes Electric Company for more than 20 years with his father "Red" Barnes. He recently retired from The University of Alabama after more than 15 years of service as a Facility Analyst in the office of Construction Administration.
Breck was a lifetime active member of Christ Episcopal Church where he served on the Vestry, taught Sunday school and served on various committees. He was a member of Dollarhide Hunting Club, a former member in the Tuscaloosa Jaycees, the Tuscaloosa Skeet Club, the Tuscaloosa Sales Club and the Tuscaloosa Sub-contractors Association.
Breck was a devoted and supportive father and volunteered as Chairman of Alabama Football Concessions for the Central High School Girls Soccer Team for two years and as an Assistant Coach for the YMCA Little League for more than five years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Leonard B. (Red) Barnes, Jr. and Elizabeth Krupp Barnes and by his grandparents, Leonard B. Barnes, Sr. and Pyrl Barnes, Smith Fredrick Krupp and Lula Belle Krupp.
He is survived by his wife, Susan McKinney Barnes, a daughter Heather Barnes and a son Conner Barnes all of Tuscaloosa. Other relatives include his Aunt and Uncle Mary Emma and Joe Battle, Sr. of Birmingham; his Uncle Fred Krupp of Charleston, S.C.; his Father-in-law, Earl McKinney of Tuscaloosa; his Brother-in-law and Sister-in-law, Bob and Sandra McKinney of Northport and other relatives and friends.
Pallbearers will be Joe Battle, Jr., Don Battle, Fred Battle, Frank Battle, Alex Battle, Earnest Collins, Tom Freeman and John Kasberg,.
Honorary Pallbearers are Joe Battle, Sr., Jimmy Battle, Kelly Tucker, Joe Bonner, Members and Sons of Dollarhide Hunting Club, Employees of The University of Alabama, Dr. Edward Hillard, Dr. Ross Vaughn, Doctors, Staff and Nurses of DCH Cancer Treatment Center and Cancer Care Center of Tuscaloosa.
The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses and staff of DCH and Cancer Care Center involved with his care; members of Christ Episcopal Church; employees of The University of Alabama; and other family and friends who showed their constant love and support during Breck’s illness, We have been blessed by your love.
Breck was a good friend to many, a loving husband and devoted father. He will be missed. In lieu of flowers the family suggests a memorial gift to the Christ Episcopal Church Capital Gifts Campaign, Hospice of West Alabama, or a charity of the donor’s choice.
Joseph Walter Sledge, Jr.
TUSCALOOSA - Joseph Walter Sledge, Jr., 76, died Thursday, December 20, at his residence at 1700 Dearing Place. Memorial services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday at Christ Episcopal Church, with The Rev. Michael Wyckoff presiding. The family will receive friends at the church following the service.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph Walter Sledge and Augusta Searcy Sledge and his grandson Johnson Christopher Young.
He is survived by his wife, Kathleen Johnson Sledge and four children, James Johnson Sledge, Dr. Joseph Walter Sledge, III, George Searcy Sledge and Kathleen Sledge Young. He is also survived by nine grandchildren, Caitlin Marie Sledge, Meaghan Caroline Sledge, Christine Emily Sledge, James Hunter Young, Stephen Joseph Young, Walter Mathew Young, Thomas George Young, Sarah Searcy Sledge and Raney Alexander Sledge.
Born in Tuscaloosa to Augusta Searcy Sledge and Joseph Walter Sledge, Sr., he was reared in Birmingham. After serving in the Army Signal Corps during World War II, he received a degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Alabama. He became Chief Engineer for Central Foundry at Holt before moving to the University of Alabama in Birmingham Hospital, where he retired as Director of Hospital Standards.
A long time member of Christ Episcopal Church in Tuscaloosa, he served twice on its vestry, most recently as Junior Warden. He was a member of the Alabama Society of Hospital Engineers. He was a member of the Apollo Club and of Golden K Kiwanis. In college, he was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. He was a member of the Sons of the Revolution in the State of Alabama, the Society of the War 1812 and the St. Andrews Society.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests a memorial gift to Christ Episcopal Church, Hospice of West Alabama or the donor’s favorite charity.

Albert Tate, Jr.
BIRMINGHAM - Albert Tate, Jr., 31, 1812 Alabama Ave. S.W., died December 12, 2001 at Coopergreen Hospital, Birmingham. Services will be held from Jerusalem Baptist Church, Green sboro, Saturday at 12:00 noon. The body will lie in state at the church one hour prior to services. Burial will follow in Shelton Cemetery. Dorsey Doughty
FAYETTE - Dorsey Doughty, age 83, of 12605 County Rd. 12, died December 14, 2001 at DCH Regional Medical Center. Services were held Sunday at 2:00 p.m. at Concord Baptist Church with Rev. Max Stripling and Rev. John Stamps officiating. Burial followed in adjoining cemetery with Nelson Funeral Home of Fayette directing.
Survivors include sister, Jean Doughty of Northport; and many nieces and nephews.
He was a Christian and member of New Hope Baptist Church. Veteran of WWII, retired from Gulf States Paper. He was respected and loved by his family and friends.
Pallbearers will be Richard Doughty, Rodney Hallman, Jimmy Hinton, Lawrence Doughty, Stanley Doughty, Floyd Hughes, Jr., Brent Jones and Larry Rhinehart.

NORTHPORT - Frederick Steven "Freddy" Collins, 58, died December 22, 2001 at DCH Regional Medical Center. Graveside services will be held from Campground Cemetery, Thursday at 11:00 a.m. with Sunset Funeral Home directing. Visitation is Wednesday from 7:00- 9:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
Michael J. Crossland
TUSCALOOSA - Michael J. Crossland, 42, died December 22, 2001 at DCH Regional Center. Services will be held at First Assembly of God Church on December 27, 2001 at 6:30 p.m. His final disposition is cremation. Memory Chapel Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
He is preceded in death by his sister, Patricia Ann Crossland, and his grandfather, Albert Free.
Survivors include his daughter, Andrya Mychell Crossland, Tuscaloosa; his brother, James Crossland, Pensacola, Fla.; his parents, Mamie Kammerer (Hans), New Lisbon, Wis., and J.T. Crossland, Reform, Ala.; his uncles, Horace Free (Lynn), Dawson Free (Doris), and Orlan Free; and his friend, Ilene Vaga.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Otto Bohannon; son, Max Bohannon; two great- grandsons, Matthew Cooper and Michael Darden.
Survivors include her daughters, Doris Bohannon, Fayette, Dean Darden, Huntsville, Grace Taylor, Fayette; son, Jerry Bohannon, Knoxville, Tenn.; sisters, Gladys Falls, Montgomery, Christine Gladden, Fayette; nine grandchildren; 17 great- grandchildren.

MOUNDVILLE - Maude Davis Chandler, 98, of P.O. Box 6, Moundville, Ala., died at DCH Regional Medical Center on Wednesday, December 26, 2001. Funeral services will be held at Moundville United Methodist Church on Saturday, December 29, 2001 at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Grant Parker, Sr. officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery in Moundville with Oakhill Funeral Home of Moundville directing. Visitation will be held at Oakhill Funeral Home in Moundville on Friday night from 6:00- 8:00 p.m.
Mrs. Chandler is preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Earl Chandler, Sr., and two sons, Thomas Earl Chandler, Jr. and James H. Chandler.
Survivors include sons, John W. Chandler (Ella) and Ray H. Chandler (Grace); grandchildren, Glenda Gault (Andy), James Allen Chandler, Georgette Neill (Chris), Eddie Earl Chandler (Kristy), Marla Dare (Austin), and Tommy Chandler (Karla); eight great-grandchildren; five step grandchildren; nine step-great-grandchildren and three step-great-great grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.
