TUSCALOOSA - Pernie Ella Mitchell, age 97 of 4233 Hillsboro Drive, Passed away January 28, 2002.
Mrs. Mitchell had been a resident of Tuscaloosa since 1928 and was a member of First Baptist Church. She was formerly employed by Gulf States Paper Company.
Survivors include one daughter, Bebe Joyce Chastine (Henry) of Tuscaloosa; two sisters, Bonnie P. Faulkner of Tuscaloosa and Betty L. James (Clarence) of Bessemer; two grandaughters, Bronwyn C. O’Hara of Gulf Shores and Teila C. White (George) of Tuscaloosa.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Hospice of West Alabama in appreciation of their extended loving care, or to the Walter. R. Guyton Memorial Scholarship Fund at the University of Alabama.
Graveside services will be held at Tuscaloosa Memorial park at 2:00 p.m. today with Rev. Carl Wells and Rev. Ron Wilson will be officiating. Family will receive visitors at 4233 Hillsboro Drive following graveside services. Arrangements will be handled by Memory Chapel Funeral Home.
Alton Haywood Evans
MOUNDVILLE - Alton Haywood Evans, 66, died January 27 at his residence. Services will be held 2:00 p.m. Wednesday at Old Union Baptist Church with Rev Lewis Cooley and Evangelist Fred Dixon officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Military graveside Honors to be performed by the U.S. Army Visitation is 6-8 tonight at the funeral home. Oakhill Funeral Home is directing.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara Ann Evans, Moundville; daughters Theresa Lynn Rogers, Vicksburg Miss. and Lisa Ann garner, Colorado City, TX.; sons, James Price Evans, Tallahasse, Fla., Timothy Alton Evans, Centerville and Billy Dwayne Evans, New Braunfels, TX.; grandchildren, Kandace Bacum, Anna Rogers, Matthews Rogers, Evan Rogers, Meagan Garner, Alex Garner and Kent Garner.
Al Evans, born December 16 1935, served two tours. Vietnam, one in Korea, retired military devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather to be. He was loved dearly.
Preston P. Brown
ASHLAND - Preston P. Brown, 87 of Ashland. Ala. will be held Today at 2:00 p.m. at the First Baptist Church, Ashland with Rev. Bruce Willis officiating. Burial will follow in Ashland City Cemetery.
Mr. Brown passed away Saturday, January 26, 2002 at Northeast Regional Medical Center in Anniston.
He was a native of Talladega County where he lived for many years. He also resided in Tuscaloosa a number of years before moving to Clay County in 1978. Mr. Brown retired from Alabama Gas Company where he was employed for forty years. He also retired from the Army after thirty-two years of service . He served in both World War II and the Korean War. He was a member of the 167th Infantry Dixie Division and the First Baptist Church, Ashland.
Mr. Brown is survived by his wife, Burta Brown, Ashland; two sons, Donald Brown, Opelika and Jeffery Brown, Tuscaloosa; one sister, Mavis Hayes, Rainbow City; three grandchildren, Ashley Brown Guess, Clinton Brown and Shane Brown; and two great-grandchildren.
Serving as pallbearers for Mr. Brown will be Ralph Harris, Clint Brown, Shane Brown, Don Shepard, Tim Farr, Ricky Farr, Larry Fetner and Pete Phillips.
Honorary pallbearers will be nieces and nephews.
Clay County Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Willie Lee Newell, Sr.
GAINSVILLE - Willie Lee Newell, Sr., 67, died January 24, 2002 at Rush Foundation Hospital in Meridian, Miss. Services are Thursday at the New Bethel Baptist Church in Gainsville at 1 p.m. Burial will follow in Spring Valley Cemetery with McInnis Mortuary of Livingston directing. Visitation is today from 1-6 at the mortuary.

TUSCALOOSA - Andy McKinney, 46, of 3119 18th Street Apt.6, died January 24, 2002 in DCH Regional Medical Center. Funeral services will be held Thursday, January 31, 2002 at 12 noon from Rollins’ Mortuary Chapel. Rev. Jeffery L. Cammon will officiate. Burial will follow in Cedar Oak Memorial Park with Rollins’ Mortuary directing.

TUSCALOOSA - Shirley J. Curley, died January 24, 2002 at DCH Regional Medical Center. Services will be held at Friendship Baptist Church, on 8th Street, Thursday at 2 p.m. Burial will follow in Cedar Oak Memorial Park. Visitation will be today from 10:30 a.m.-7 p.m. at the funeral home and at the church one hour prior to service.
Mary Jane Trimm Banks
FAYETTE - Mary Jane Trimm Banks, 55, of 246 County Road 136, died January 28, 2002 at her residence. Services will be held at Nelson Funeral Home Chapel, Thursday at 3 p.m. Burial will follow in Rehobeth Baptist Church Cemetery. Visitation will be tonight from 5:30-8 at the funeral home. Richard M. Archibald, Sr.
COTTONDALE - Richard M. Archibald, Sr., age 59, of 840 Ole Mill Trace, died January 27, 2002, at his residence. In accordance with his wishes, a private graveside service was held on Tuesday, January 29, 2002, at Memory Hill Gardens with the Rev. Herb Davis officiating.
He is preceded in death by his father, Robert Bruce Archibald.
Survivors include his wife, Carolyn; sons, Mac (Melanie) and Robert (Linda); daughter, Karen; grandchildren, Jared, Lauren, Josh, Carson, Connor, and Luke; mother, Thelma Archibald; brothers, Bruce, Carl, Jimmy, and Freddie; sisters, Ramona, Elaine and Rose Marie.
Rev. Archibald, a retired Southern Baptist minister of 34 years, was a beloved husband and father.

Rufus “StewMeat” Vanable
EUTAW - Rufus "StewMeat" Vanable, a long time civil and voting rights activist, died Friday, January 25, 2002, at age 65.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 2, 2002 at 11:00 a.m. at Second Baptist Church in Eutaw. Following the funeral service, mule-drawn wagon will take the remains to Clarence Thomas Cemetery in Eutaw accompanied by state and national SCLC officials. Gandy Funeral Home of Eutaw is directing.
Bobby Ray Newell
GORDO - Bobby Ray Newell, 49, of 26 Preacher Street, died January 28, 2002 at his residence. Services will be at Crossroads Baptist Church, Thursday at 3 p.m. Rev. Paul Meacham and Rev. Keith Crowley will officiate. Burial will follow in the Church Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6-8 tonight at the funeral home. The body will lie in state thirty minutes prior to service. Skelton Funeral Home of Reform is directing.
He is preceded in death by his father, Clarence Newell; brother, Billy Newell; and sister, Sue McCrackin.
Survivors include his wife, Charlene Newell, Gordo; son, Drew Newell, Columbus, Miss; step-son, Anthony McCrackin (Amanda), Gordo; sisters, Ruby Kelly (Junior), Buhl, Dorie Belcher (Dewitt), Birmingham, Doris Cook (Pete), Palmetto; and Betty Purcell, Reform; brother, Benny Newell (Mary), Reform; mother, Della Newell, Reform; a host of nieces and nephews and friends.
Mr. Newell was born May 4, 1952 in Gordo, Ala. to Clarence and Della Driver Newell. He was employed by Robertson Brothers Lumber Co. as a truck driver and he was a life long resident of Pickens County.
Pallbearers will be Jeremy Newell, Adam Newell, George Birmingham, Mike Huffman, Billy Holsomback, and Scott Driver.
Honorary pallbearers are Employees of Robertson Brothers Lumber Company and Employees of Dunn’s Grocery.

MARION - Doyle Hartley, 89, died January 28, 2002 at Southland Nursing Home. Graveside services will be held 11:00 a.m. Wednesday at Mt. Ivah Cemetery with Dwayne Earl Hartley and Rev. Robert Woodard officiating. Visitation is tonight from 6-8 at the funeral home. Kirk Funeral Home of Marion is directing.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Carolean Hartley, Son-in-law, Ben Ivey, Grandson, Little Jim Stone.
Survivors include five daughters, Sara (Alvin) Duncan of Selma, Ala., Fannie (Morris) Lipham of Prattville, Ala., Shirley (Richard) Royster of Marion, Rebecca (Wayne) Stone of Marion and Carolyn Ivey of Centreville, Ala.; a brother Carl (Beatrice) Hartley of Centreville, Ala.; nine grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Michael Duncan, Luke Henry, Brian Duke, Robert Lipham, Brian Hood and Ed Massey.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to Mt. Ivah Cemetery Fund.
Brady Collin Stanford
VERNON - Brady Collin Stanford, 5 year old son of Charles and Tiffany Stanford, died Sunday January 27, 2002 at Children’s Hospital in Birmingham. Services will be held 2:00 p.m. today at First Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Lamar Memory Gardens. The body will lie in state from 1:00-2:00 p.m. prior to service. Chandler Funeral Home in Vernon is directing.
Martha Ann Smith
FOSTERS - Martha Ann Smith, age 78, died January 29, 2002, at her residence. Services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, Grants Creek Baptist Church with George Lee and Rev. Charles O’Neal officiating. Burial will follow in church cemetery with Memory Chapel Funeral Home directing. Visitation will be 7-9 tonight at the funeral home.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry Albert Smith Sr. and Anna Caro Smith; brother, Andrew Caro Smith; and sister, Peggy Smith Douglas
Survivors include nephews, Eula Bell and Montez Oliver and James "Andy" Douglas and wife Gail Douglas;; great niece and nephews, Mandy Barnes, N.C., Anna and Andrew Douglas, Alabama; cousins, Johnny and Sherry Oliver, Jan and George Garner.
She served as nurses aid in WACS in World War II, daughters of America Revolution. She graduated from TCHS and University of Alabama with a Masters degree in Education. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma. She retired as a teacher after 33 years in Tuscaloosa City School system, teaching at Jemison, Parkview and Oakdale first grade.
Special thanks to Gail Douglas for the exceptional care that she provided to "Mart" over the last 13 years. "Mart" will be greatly missed.
