The burial service will follow at Tuscaloosa Memorial Park. The family will receive friends tonight from 5-7 at the Bryce House on Bryce Hospital Lawn.
Born Stephen Eloise Jenkins on April 22, 1905, in Atlanta, Mrs. Tarwater was the daughter of Stephen Thomas Jenkins and Mollie Allgood Jenkins of Oneonta.
She is survived by her son, Dr. Thomas Sidney Tarwater, and his wife, Barbara, of Northport.
She was valedictorian of her senior class at Blount County High School, attended Athens College for three years, then graduated from The University of Alabama in 1925, with a B.A. in French. While at the University, she was sponsor for an ROTC company, was a member of Chi Omega, the social sorority; and Kappa Delta Pi, education honorary. She later attended the University as a graduate student prior to accepting a teaching job at Gurley.
On July 28, 1926, she married Dr. Tarwater, who, at that time, was a psychiatrist at Bryce Hospital. Sharing his interest in mental health, she began to volunteer her time to enhance the quality of life for patients at the hospital. From the time Dr. Tarwater was superintendent of the Alabama State Hospitals in 1950, until his retirement as state mental health commissioner in 1970, she was a leading figure in the everyday life of Bryce.
Widely known for her charm and wit as a gracious hostess, and her ability to make others feel at ease in her presence, she made her mark on countless church, civic, and social activities in this area. A member of First United Methodist Church, she had been a member of the administrative board, Circle #4 of the United Methodist Women, and held other official duties. She designed Chitwood Hall at the church, spearheaded church parsonage improvement, and, for decades, was a cook and cook supervisor of major renown during the church's annual Thanksgiving luncheons.
Engaged in local garden club endeavors, she was distinguished also for her abilities in flower arranging. For more than half a century, her arrangements captured attention at the UA President's Mansion, private clubs, weddings, mental health functions, and at numerous other social events.
Her community service further included work in the old Community Chest in its first years of life, and the old Infantile Paralysis Association, Cub Scout instruction, PTA, Quest Club, Amelia Gayle Gorgas Chapter, UDC; Women's Auxiliary of the Tuscaloosa County Medical Society, DAR, and other groups.
In 1967, for the first time in its 111-year history, the Alabama Mu Chapter of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity at the UA awarded a woman, Mrs. Tarwater, its "Man of the Year" Award. At that time, she was president of the Minerva Club, for mothers of SAE members, and under her leadership the fraternity house had undergone extensive redecoration.
In 1991, she was honorary chairman of the Decorator Showhouse at the former superintendent's residence at Bryce – the first such enterprise of the Mental Health Association in Tuscaloosa County.
In 1995, she was honored by the Nu Beta Chapter of Chi Omega for 60 years of service, with a scholarship to the University named in her honor.
Pallbearers will be A. K. Callahan, Jr., Nicholas Latimer, Tom Latimer, Robby Keefer, John Keefer, and John Crutcher.
Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Omer Baker, Ernest Williams, Danny Rountree, Dr. T. H. Patton, Dr. Philip LaMoreaux, A. K. Callahan, Dr. Gordon King, David McGiffert, Dr. Bill Shamblin, Robert Harris, Bill Barton, Dr. Sam Darden, and Evelyn Hardy and her employees at LaRocca Nursing Home.
