Doris Newton Vickery

FAYETTE - Doris Newton Vickery, 86, 2779 Co. Road 53, died February 2, 2002 at Fayette Medical Center. Services will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Nelson Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Greg Baker officiating. Visitation is tonight from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home. Nelson Funeral Home in directing.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Haskell Vickery.

Survivors include sons, Robert Merritt, Montrose, Ala. and John Merritt, Oxford, Miss.; sisters Betty Newton Merritt, Fayette; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Born and raised in Fayette County, attending Montevallo. Livingston and the University of Alabama. Taught school in Fayette public schools from 1949-1959; retired from Escambia Co. Florida Schools in 1980 and retired to her childhood home place on county road 53 and lived there happily thereafter to the end of her days.

Robert Lee Lawson

SELMA - Robert Lee Lawson, 88, died Jan. 30, 2001, at Perry County Nursing Home. Services will be held at Kirk Funeral Homes Chapel of Marion on Friday at 2:30 p.m. Burial will be in Pisgah Cemetery. Visitation is tonight from 6 to 8 p.m. Kirk Funeral Homes of Marion is directing.

Frances W. Marott

BIRMINGHAM - Frances W. Marott, 82, 3521 Meadow Brook Circle, died Jan. 30, 2001. Services will be held at Heritage Chapel Funeral Home today at 2 p.m. with A.L. Courtney officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in Tuscaloosa Memorial Park. Heritage Chapel Funeral Home is directing.

She is survived by her daughters, Victoria Marott Smith of Tuscaloosa and Brenda Beeson Johnson of Birmingham; sons, Geoffrey Edwin Marott of Atlanta, Ga. and George Randall Marott of Daphne; grandchildren, Michael Johnson, Amanda and Kyle Smith, Laurel and Courtney Marott.

Pallbearers will be Jim Johnson, Michael Johnson, Michael Courtney and John B. Smith.

Marvin Edward Holifield

MARION - Marvin Edward Holifield, 75, died February 1, 2002 at Bryan Whitfield Memorial Hospital in Demopolis. Services will be held 2:00 p.m. Monday at Bethlehem united Methodist Church with Rev. Craig Nobles and Rev. Rebecca Harper officiating. Burial will follow in Bethlehem Cemetery. Visitation is tonight from 6-8 at the funeral home. Rockco's Funeral Home of Centreville is directing.

Survivors include his wife, Betty L. Holifield, Marion; one son, Donald Gardner, Centreville; one daughter, Roxanne and Husband Roland Jones, Centreville; two sisters, Azell Smith- McCalla, Ala. and Grace Nichols, Marion.; five grandchildren, Kevin Gardner and wife Kendall, Kurt Gardner, Brandon Murphy and wife Lindsay, Kellye Murphy and Derek Gardner; one great-grandchildren, Dylan Murphy.

Mr. Holifield was a member of Bethlehem United Methodist Church. A Veteran of World War II, also serving in the Navy.

Pallbearers will be Kevin Gardner, Kurt Gardner, Brandon Murphy, Wade Hobson, Wayne Holifield, Glen Nichols, Kevin Smith and Kerry Smith.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to Bethlehem United Methodist Church.

Amos Apollos

SULLIGENT - Amos Apollos, age 43 of Sulligent, Ala. passed away Friday, February 1, 2002 at Carraway Medical Center in Winfield, Ala. Graveside services will be held today, February 4, 2002 at 12:00 p.m. at Gilmer Addition/Sulligent City Cemetery.

Jimmy Daniel Allen

ALICEVILLE - Jimmy Daniel Allen, 59, 1109 Franconia Road NE, died February 1, 2002 at Aliceville Manor Nursing Home. Graveside services will be held 11:00 a.m. Monday at Magnolia Memorial Gardens with Rev. Mike Griffin and Rev. Jim Cooley officiating. Skelton Funeral Home of Reform is directing.

He is preceded in death by his father, Columbus Allen.

Survivors include one sister, Sharlotte Fitch (Phillip) of Aliceville, Ala.; four brothers, Larry Allen (Jane) of Opelika, Ala., Alton Allen (Nancy) of Middletown, MD., Max Allen (Linda) of Alliceville, Ala. and Harold Allen (Schere) of Round Rock, Texas; mother, Bessie Allen Mansfield of Aliceville, Ala.; 13 nieces and nephews; special niece, April Box and special nephew, Phil Fitch.

Mr. Allen was born in Pickens County, Alabama on July 20, 1942 to Columbus Allen and Bessie Poole Allen. He was a member of the Baptist Faith. A former dispatcher for Gundlock Heating and Cooling in Richmond, Va. And he was a well known resident of Aliceville.

Pallbearers will be Ted Ezelle, Phil Fitch, Jimmy Craft, Jimmy Earl Fikes, Steward Allen and Richard Brownlee.

Honorary pallbearers are Employees of Aliceville Manor Nursing Home and Dr. Zakir Patel.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials be made to West End Baptist Church of Aliceville First Baptist Church.

Thomas Edward Anders

NORTHPORT - Thomas Edward Anders, 63, No. 41 West Circle, died February 3, 2002 at DCH Regional Medical Center. Complete arrangements will be announced later by Sunset Funeral Home.

Austin David Crump

TUSCALOOSA - Austin David Crump, 3 ½ months, of 1937 Inverness Parkway, died February 3, 2002 at his home. Services will be held at Heritage Chapel today at 1 p.m. Burial will follow in Tuscaloosa Memorial Park. Greg Makcem will officiate. Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the funeral home. Heritage Chapel Funeral Home is directing.

Survivors include his mother, Leila L. Kiker, Tuscaloosa; father, David Crump, Tuscaloosa; aunt, Melissa Powers, Warner Robins, Ga.; uncles, Michael Strickland, and Douglas Crump, both of Tuscaloosa; sister, Tiffany Elizabeth Crump, Tuscaloosa; brother, Houston Blake Crump, Tuscaloosa; grandparents, Catherine Strickland, Tuscaloosa, Ronald and Jane Crump, Tuscaloosa; and a God-sister, Ashley Trimm, Tuscaloosa.

Pallbearers will be Houston Crump and Michael Strickland.

Austin was born October 16, 2001 at DCH Regional Medical Center. He died February 3, 2002 at home.

Doyle S. Bell

TUSCALOOSA - Doyle S. Bell, died February 1, 2002 at Bryce Medical Center. Services will be held at Plum Grove Baptist Church, Thursday at 1 p.m.. Burial will follow in Cedar Oak Memorial Park. Visitation will be today from 10:30 a.m.- 5 p.m. at Van Hoose and Steele Chapel and at the church one hour prior to service. Van Hoose and Steele Funeral Home is directing.

Jesse Eugene Gardner

MYRTLEWOOD - Jesse Eugene Gardner, age 74, of 402 Cedar, died Jan. 30, 2001. Services will be 2 p.m. Friday, Myrtlewood Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Myrtlewood Cemetery with O'Bryant Chapel Funeral Home of Linden directing. Visitation will be tonight 6-8 at the funeral home.

Jeff Crawford

GREENSBORO - Jeff Crawford, age 71, died Tues., Jan. 30, 2001, at Selma Baptist Hospital. Services will be 11 a.m. Friday, Rameys Chapel. Burial will follow in Ramey's Chapel Cemetery with Kirk Funeral Homes of Green sboro directing.

Jennifer Gail Thomas Cleve

GREENSBORO - Jennifer Gail Thomas Cleve, age 29, died Jan. 30, 2001, in Demopolis. Services will be 3 p.m. Friday, Green sboro Bible Methodist Church with Rev. Steve Vernon officiating. Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery with Kirk Funeral Homes of Green sboro directing. The body will lie in state one hour prior to service at the church.

Survivors include her husband, Brian Parker Cleve, Green sboro; daughter, Breann Taylor Cleve, Green sboro; son, Parker Thomas Cleve, Green sboro; sisters, Sheree Johnson (Wayne), Green sboro; Tris Bessiouni (Jala), Tuscalooosa, Karen Besant (Buddy), Tuscaloosa; brother, Michael Thomas (Linda), Green sboro; father and mother, Cecil and Evelyn Thomas, Green sboro; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Joseph John and Vicky Marjean Barbara, Buffalo, N.Y.; and aunt, Lori Rice, Tuscaloosa.

Rev. Kenneth Earl Cabbil

BIRMINGHAM - The Rev. Kenneth Earl Cabbil, formerly of Holt, died Jan. 30, 2001, in Birmingham. Complete funeral arrangements will be announced later by Van Hoose and Steele.

Carl E. Harris

NORTHPORT - Carl E. Harris, 58, of 12173 Arrow Road, died February 5, 2002 at his residence. A memorial service will be held at Christ Episcopal Church, Saturday at 2 p.m. with entombment to follow. Rev. Michael Wyckoff and Rev. Hoyt Winslett will officiate. Visitation will be in Parish Hall following the service. Memory Chapel Funeral Home is directing.

He is preceded in death by his mother, Ethel P. Harris; father, Carl Harris; brother-in-law, John Owen; aunts, Emma Gennett, and Edith Baker; uncles, Jack Pattison and Ernie Gennett.

Survivors include his wife, Cindy O. Harris; daughter, Heather Harris; stepson, Jason Smith; special cousin, John Gennett; mother and father-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Owen; brother-in-law, Bruce Owen; sisters-in-law, Judy Gay (David), and Sandra Pierce (Eddie); uncles, Harry Pattison and Bill Pattison; aunt, Helen Barretta; and other cousins, nieces and nephews.

Carl was born in Bedford, Indiana on July 23, 1943. He attended the University of Dayton, Ohio and then enlisted in the United States Air Force. While in the Air Force he was involved in aerospace medical research. In 1976, he moved to Tuscaloosa to accept a position as chief pilot and flight manager with Phifer Wire where he was employed for 24 years.

Carl was an active member of Christ Episcopal Church and Robert Hart’s Sunday School class.

Carl was an avid runner and an active member of the Tuscaloosa Track Club.

Carl truly loved life and lived every minute to the fullest.

The family wishes to thank the many friends and neighbors who have been with them through his illness.

Honorary pallbearers are Dr. Stephen Browne and office staff, Dr. Pamela Hughes and Dr. Shelby Sanford and Employees of the Cancer Care Center, Hospice of West Alabama, Employees of Phifer Wire, Christ Episcopal Church family and numerous close friends.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to Christ Episcopal Church.

John Woodson Gray

BERRY - John Woodson Gray, age 81, of 3074 County Road 83, died Jan. 30 2001, at Fayette Medical Center. Services will be 2 p.m. today, Bethabara Baptist Church. Burial will follow in adjoining cemetery with Norwood Chapel of Fayette directing.

Robert Cabbil

GREENSBORO - Robert Cabbil, age 85, of 12352 County Road 16, died February 2, 2002, at his residence. Services will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, Cassimone A.M.E. Zion Church in Green sboro. Burial will follow in Camerson Cemetery with Agnew Funeral Home directing. the body will lie in state one hour prior to service.

Samuel Henry Harper

NORTHPORT - Samuel Henry Harper, 65, 5321 Flat Woods Road, died Jan. 29, 2001, at DCH Regional Medical Center. Services will be held at Heritage Chapel Funeral Home today at 10 a.m. with Mike Flowers and Dolan Davis Jr. officiating. Burial will be in Tuscaloosa Memorial Park. Heritage Chapel Funeral Home is directing.

He is preceded in death by his father, Samuel Moses Harper.

He is survived by his wife of 44 ½ years, Faye I. Harper; mother, Sue May Harper; sons and daughters-in-law, Alan and Mary Jean, Bruce and Kathy, and Bart and Tammy; grandchildren, Brant and Sam, Brittiany and Rachel, and Hunter and Savannah; sister, Mary E. Miller (Buddy).

Mr. Harper was born on Jan. 13, 1936, and raised in Northport. He worked with Church Plastering Co. for many years. He was co-owner of B&H Plastering and was a member of Flatwoods Baptist Church.

Mr. Harper, known as Sammy "Sambo," was a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather and a friend to many people. He can best be described as a fair and honest man who believed in doing what was right for his fellow man. He enjoyed his friends, working on his farm and spending time with his family. Family and friends can take comfort in the fact that he was called to service by his maker because he was needed elsewhere to make a difference in someone's life. He will be missed.

The family would like to give a special thanks to the Northport Police Department, Northport Fire Department, other emergency personnel, Dr. Charles Gross, Dr. Robert Posey and the DCH Emergency Room personnel.

Pallbearers will be his grandsons, Brant Harper, Sam Harper and Hunter Harper, who will do a special walk behind the casket. Others include Alan Bean, Bud Bean, Clovis Box, Bobby Drummond, Billy McKnight and Billy Ballard.

Honorary pallbearers are the Sonny Aaron family, Josh Adkin family, Anabel Church family, Gillie Dockery family, Bertis Guy family, Dick Johnson family, Leon Mitchum family, A.D. Parker family, Jessie Pope family, Jeff Richardson family, Melvin Sellers family, Leonard Smith family, Jimmy Thompson family, Watt Watkins family, Alburn Wyatt family, Dr. Lance Hogan at Five Points Baptist, friends of the Flatwoods community and 42nd Street, Class of 1954 Tuscaloosa County High School, retired and active employees of BellSouth, Northport Police Department's special friends, Coffee Drinking & Mall Walking Buddies, and other special friends and acquaintances of "Sambo."

In lieu of flowers, contributions are welcomed to Flatwoods Baptist Church.
