REFORM - Theresa McCoy, 50, died Oct. 7, 2000, at UAB Hospital in Birmingham. Services will be Friday Oct. 13, 2000, at First Baptist Church in Reform at 2 p.m. Burial will follow in Hopewell Cemetery. The body will lie in state one hour prior to services. Reform Memorial Funeral Home is directing.
Herbert M. Newell, Jr.
FAYETTE - Herbert M. Newell, Jr., age 75, of Fayette, died October 9, 2000, at DCH Regional Medical Center in Tuscaloosa.
Services will be at Fayette First Baptist Church on Thursday, October 12, at 11 a.m., with Dr. Glen Weekly and Rev. Jim Ham officiating. Burial will follow in the Fayette City Cemetery. The body will lie in state at the church from 10:30 to 11 a.m. Nelson Funeral Home is directing.
Survivors include his wife, Jeanie (Patterson) Newell; a son, Herbert M. Newell, III and daughter-in-"Love", Susan Goins Newell of Tuscaloosa; a grandson, Herbert M. Newell, IV of Tuscaloosa, who attends Samford University in Birmingham; three sisters, Wanda Gernhofer of Hedgeville, W. Va., Edith Woodson of Knoxville, Tenn. and Nita (Mrs. Roy) Hayes of Bradenton, Fla.; a stepsister, Jo (Woodson) Faulk; a stepbrother, Bill Woodson of Alexander City and several nieces and nephews.
Born June 20, 1925, in Evergreen, Conecuh County, Alabama, to Herbert M. Newell, Sr., and Mabel Fallin Newell, he received his education in Clanton, Ala., In December 1942, at the age of 17 he joined the U.S. Navy during World War II to serve in the South Pacific until June 1946, continuing to serve in the Naval Reserve for several years thereafter. After being honorably discharged he graduated from the Birmingham Business College with a major in accounting.
On May 28, 1949, he married his first and only love, Jeanie Patterson of Fayette. He joined the Fayette First Baptist Church in October 1949, later to be ordained deacon on September 10, 1952. His last term as deacon ended just before his death in September 2000. He also served the church and Christ in many other capacities. He was a member of the Alabama Baptist Historical Commission for many years, serving as president for one two-year term. At the time of his death he was serving as the vice president for District IX of the Alabama Baptist Historical Society.
He worked at Golden Eagle Syrup Manufacturing Co., Inc., serving as the secretary and treasure until July 1986. For a long period he worked part-time for the Fayette Gas and Water Boards as bookkeeper and various other business. He was responsible for renumbering city streets and establishing 911 emergency addresses for the City of Fayette.
In 1972 he was elected as a councilman of the City of Fayette, an office which he held until he retired from service in 1992. He served as a member of the West Alabama Planning and Development Council until 1996, serving as chairman for one term. In 1984 he received the David Cochran Award from the council in recognition of his many years of service to Fayette County and West Alabama.
He was active in many state and regional genealogical societies. He co-authored eight books with his wife, including the large volume "History of Fayette County, Alabama."
He was a husband, father, grandfather, public servant and great friend, but first and foremost he was a devoted follower of Jesus Christ. He leaves a remarkable legacy for his family - but all he would want to be known about his life is that "Jesus is Lord".
Pallbearers are Stewart Greene, Jimmy Trice, Mike Freeman, Barry Eads, Ed Bartholomew and Johnny Fulmer. Honorary pallbearers are the deacons of Fayette First Baptist Church, and the police and fire departments of the City of Fayette.
Ralph C. Odom
BERRY - Ralph C. Odom, age 74, of 91 Blue Water Trace, died Oct. 10, 2000, at Fayette Medical Center. Services will be 2 p.m. Friday, Spruce Pine Baptist Church in Phil Campbell. Burial will follow in adjoining cemetery with Norwood Chapel of Fayette directing. Visitation will be 6-8 tonight at the funeral home. The body will lie in state at the church one hour prior to service.
Nora Pearce
EUTAW - Nora Pearce, 88, of County Road 60, died October 10, 2000, at Greene County Hospital. Services are today at Beaulah Baptist Church in Knoxville, Ala. at 10 a.m. The Rev. Bennie Hayes and the Rev. Carl Sudduth will officiate. The body will lie in state one hour prior to the service.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Virgil Pearce; sons, Ural Pearce and Guy Pearce; grandson, Ricky Pearce.
Survivors include grandsons, Guy Pearce Jr. and Jimmy Pearce; granddaughters, Carol Norwood and Belinda Hunter; and six great-grandchildren.
She was a lifelong member of the Beulah community and the Beulah Baptist Church.
Pallbearers are Harold Clayton, Ray Drummond, Morgan Sellers, Butch Mayo, Mike Sellers, Steve Culberson and Charles Thomas.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations be made to the Beulah Baptist Church.
Verlie Smith Watford
NORTHPORT - Verlie Smith Watford, 50, of 1401 3rd Street, died October 9, 2000, at her residence. Services are 1 p.m. Saturday at the 19th St. Pentecostal Church, with Bishop Johnny K. James "Basil" Welch
MOUNDVILLE - James "Basil" Welch, age 81, of 11025 Myers Road, died Oct. 10, 2000, at Northport DCH Rehab Center. Services will be 10 a.m. Friday, Memory Chapel with Bro. Lynwood Duncan and Bro. Harold Johnson officiating. Burial will follow in Memory Hill Gardens with Memory Chapel Funeral Home directing. Visitation will be 6-8 tonight at the funeral home. The body will lie in state one hour prior to the service.
He was preceded in death by his wife, of 54 years, Fannie Bell Welch; parents, James William Welch and Pearlie Isabell Bynum; sisters, Brazzie Mae Welch Garrison and Annie Lucille Welch Snyder; brothers Jessie Cliff Welch and Arlington Monroe Welch.
Survivors include his sons, James "Larry" Welch and wife Mary Ann Snider Welch, William De "Lanny" Welch and wife Karen Kilgo Welch; sisters, Jimmie Nell Hartley and Dorothy Harless; brother "Carl" Welsey Welch; six grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Jeremy Auvil, Ronald Hartley, Eric Howell, Lane Kelley, Ricky Luker and Todd Welch.
Honorary pallbearers are Kelly Tucker, Russell Essary, Northport DCH Rehab, TSC Unit DCH-Tuscaloosa, Drs. Omar Smith, Simpson, John Summerford, and Wal-Mart Bingo.

Margaret Louise Beausang
TUSCALOOSA - Services for Margaret Louise Beausang, 2823 3rd St., will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 17, at 11 a.m. at Holt United Methodist Church, 2 Bealle St., Holt, Ala. Officiating will be the Rev. Darrell Garrett pastor of the Holt United Methodist Church and the Rev. Kennard C. Smith, Director of the Wesley Foundation, The University of Alabama. Mrs. Beausang died Oct. 12, 3:35 p.m. The body will lie in state at the church one hour prior to services. Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Monday at Memory Chapel Funeral Home.
A native of Jefferson County, she was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. John T. Whestone and the widow of the late Charles Joseph Beausang.
A graduate of Holt High School, she attended the University of Alabama where she was a member of Blackfriers. She was retired from the University having been employed there for 21 years.
As active member of the Holt United Methodist Church, she taught a variety of Sunday School Classes, her most recent assignment being the Loyce Boteler Class. She was also a member of the Coterie Club and the Holt Study Club. She is survived by two sons, Fred W. Innes Jr. of Atlanta and Michael W. Innes of Huntsville; four stepchildren, Catherine Purpora, Elizabeth Simms, Richard Beausang and Thomas Beausang. She is also survived by a sister-in-law, Josephine Whetstone; four granddaughters; seven stepchildren; two nephews; and one great-granddaughter.
Pallbearers will be Johal Botler, Judge Steve Wilson, Gus Grosse, Charles Rushing, Larry Gray, Carl Wright, A.K. Calahan Jr. and John D. Shirley.
Honorary pallbearers are Rosie B. Jones, Woody Clements, Jerry Belk, Jones Tubb, Dr. Thomas McDermott and members of Holt United Methodist Church.
