Nettie Edwards Spain
GREENSBORO - Nettie Edwards Spain, 83, of Green sboro, AL, died May 3, 2002.
Nettie was the widow of Frank Edwards Spain of Birmingham and Green sboro. She was born in Alexandria, Louisiana, to Sallie Donald and John Henry Edwards. She attended Birmingham Southern College. Nettie began her career as a reporter and moved into public relations. She was a noted photographer. Her long career in work for nonprofit organizations in Birmingham included the American Heart Association, the Alabama Association for Mental Health. At the United Way, where she was assistant executive director and at UAB she was assistant to the president for development.
Nettie served on many nonprofit boards of directors in Birmingham, including: Children’s Aid, the Volunteer Bureau, Children’s Theater, Jefferson-Shelby Lung Association, and the Norton Board of Birmingham Southern College. She was active in Hale County, serving on the boards of Historic Hale County Preservation Society, Kate Duncan Smith DAR chapter, the Hale County Chapter of ARC, and the Hale County Library. She received many citations for her community work in Birmingham and Green sboro. She was a Paul Harris Fellow of the Rotary Foundation and a Benjamin Franklin Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts in London.
Other memberships included the National Public Relations Council of Health and Welfare Services, the Birmingham Women’s Committee of 100, the Order of the Crown in America, Colonial Dames, DAR and First Families of Virginia.
Nettie Spain is survived by her cousin Caroline Hall of Kingsland, Texas. She is also survived by the family of Frank Spain. Nephew, Richard Spain Riley; great nieces and families: Elna Riley Brendel and sons, Richard and Russell Brendel; Margaret Riley Lines and husband, Blucher, children, Kate, John and Margaret Lines. Mr. Spain’s grandchildren and their families: Ellen Hodges Powell and husband Arthur, daughter, Dabney Weatherford; Chap and Peggy Hodges, sons and daughters-in-law Spain and Brandi Hodges and Justin and Kristin Hodges; Billy and Nancy McDonald, children Maggie, Lucie and Will McDonald; Cameron McDonald Vowell and husband Scott, son John Scott Vowell, Jr.
She is also survived by her "adopted" family, the Privetts of Green sboro and Birmingham: Harriett Privett Murphy and son Thomas Joseph Murphy, Jr.; William Kinnaird Privett and daughters Caryl Privett, Lillian Privett Laughlin and husband Walter, Katherine Privett Methany and husband Glenn; Ruth Privett Doering and husband Dwight, and Lynn Privett Finer and husband Sherman.
Visitation will be at Johns-Ridout’s, Southside Chapel, Monday, May 6 from 5 to 7 p.m. The funeral service will be graveside at Elmwood Cemetery Tuesday, May 7 at 3:00 p.m. There will also be a memorial service at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 905 Church Street, Green sboro, AL, Wednesday, May 8 at 11:00 a.m. Rev. Fletcher Comer will preside at the Funeral and at the Memorial Service.

Catherine Mae Thorpe
TUSCALOOSA - Catherine Mae Thorpe, of Tuscaloosa passed away Saturday, May 04, 2002 at DCH Hospital, Tuscaloosa. She is the late wife of the Reverend Archer Thorpe. Visitation will be Monday, May 6 from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Sandusky First Baptist Church in Sandusky with the Funeral Service beginning at 2:00 p.m. Bell Funeral Home is directing.

LIVINGSTON - Richard Williams, 37, of 353 Hines Road died May 1, 2002 at University Medical Center in Jackson. Local visitation is today from 11:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. in Livingston at the mortuary and from 7-8 p.m. tonight at Peoples Funeral Home in Canton, Mississippi. Services will be Monday at the South Liberty Baptist Church in Canton at 11:00 a.m. The Rev. Lester Carson will officiate with burial at 3:00 p.m. in the Pine Grove Cemetery in Livingston with McInnis Mortuary of Livingston directing.
Dr. Jack D. Hollingsworth
TUSCALOOSA - Dr. Jack D. Hollingsworth, age 75, died May 2, 2002, at Northport Medical Center. Graveside services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Tuscaloosa Memorial Park with Heritage Chapel Funeral Home directing. Visitation will be 6-8 tonight at the funeral home.
Dr. Hollingsworth was a graduate of the University of Alabama where he received his BS and MA. He received his doctoral degree from the University of Georgia. He taught school in the Tuscaloosa County School system and the Ft. Benning School System.
He was a strong promoter of Special Olympics. He served as State Director of Special Olympics in Georgia, upon returning to the Tuscaloosa area, he was on the Board of Directors and on the Executive Committee for Alabama.
He was retired from the armed forces where he received many honors. He was retired from Partlow State School. He was instrumental in establishing a reunion group for the 4th Replacement Depot of World War II, where he renewed old memories and friendships each year. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church where he had served as a deacon and elder. He was a member of Gideons International. He was a past member of Druid Civitans and Tuscaloosa Jaycees.
He was the son of Elbert and Melissa Hollingsworth.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Dutton (Dot) Hollingsworth; son, Jack Darel Hollingsworth, Jr., and wife, Barbara; granddaughters, Kerri Owen and Andrea Cartee (Mike); three great-grandchildren all of Hiram, Ga.; and sister, Elsie Brandon (Vernon) of Meridian, Miss.
Pallbearers will be Wayne Ryan, Michael Cartee, Robert Sanders, Dawson Chism, Dr. Fred Hill and Gaines House.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to First Presbyterian Church.

FAYETTE - Louella Wright Bobo, 58, of 2408 8th Ave. South, died Feb. 7, 2001, at Fayette Medical Center. Survivors include her sons, Billy Pate, Josh Sexton, and Jonathan Sexton; sisters, Laurene Glover, and Evelyn Frakes; and five grandchildren.
Rubin “Rudie” Ulysses Dewey Isreal Ervin
NORTHPORT - Jesus called our beloved "Little Rudie" to be home with Him and the Angels. Rubin "Rudie" Ulysses Dewey Isreal Ervin, 23 months, of 12321 Boone Lane, died April 26, 2002 at Childrens Hospital in Birmingham. Services will be held at Sulphur Springs Freewill Baptist Church, Sunday at 2:30 p.m. Rev. John Reed and Rev. Thomas Vaughn will officiate. Burial will follow in the Church Cemetery. Visitation will be tonight at Magnolia Chapel of Northport from 7-9 p.m. The body will lie in state at the church 30 minutes prior to services. Magnolia Chapel Funeral Home of Northport is directing.
He is preceded in death by his grandfather, Robert Lee Ervin; great-grandfather, Dewey George and William Bibby.
Although his time on earth was short he touched many lives, with his dimpled smile, shiny blue eyes and two sucked fingers. His Mommy and Daddy love and miss him very much, but they know he is resting in the loving arms of Jesus.
Survivors include his parents, Dewey and Henrietta Marie Ervin, Samantha; brother, Lee Ervin and wife, Mary Beth Ervin, Tempe, AZ.; sister, Deena L. ALICEVILLE - Mimie Frazier, age 87, died April 23, 2002 at Aliceville Manor Nursing Home. Services will be held Friday at 1:00 p.m. from Springhill Baptist Church. Professor Gerald Robert Gibbons
COTTONDALE - Professor Gerald Robert Gibbons, born to the late Robert C. and Mildred S. Gibbons on August 27, 1931, in Waukegan, Illinois, died on May 11, 2002, at home in Cottondale, Alabama. He leaves his wife Betty Hoffman Gibbons, his children Tambalyn Ballard (Chris) and Thomas Chapman (Cindy), his brother and sister-in-law C.B (Barney) and Barbara Gibbons, his grandchildren Jordan Ballard, Robert Alexander Ballard, Wesley Chapman and Brandalyn Chapman, his cousins Margaret, Kevin, and Eric Schexnayder and Stephen Brooks, his nieces and nephew Susan Peterson, Karen Tatro and Russell Gibbons, and great-nephews, a great-niece, and other cousins. His family very much appreciates the competent and compassionate care he received from the staff at DCH Two Southeast and Hospice of West Alabama.
Professor Gibbons received three degrees from Duke University, The A.B. in History in 1954, The LL B. in 1956, and the LL M in 1960. He later attended Columbia University as a Ford Foundation Fellow and was awarded the J.S.D. in 1996. He taught for a total of thirty-eight years, at Duke University, at the Law Schools at Mercer, Cincinnati, Rutgers-Camden, and, last at Alabama. He originally served as director of the Alabama Law Institute as well. During the last few years of his teaching career he served as the Marc Ray Clement Professor of Law.
Literally thousands of Alabama Lawyers learned Property Law from Professor Gibbons. His Articles have appeared in some of the Nation’s leading Law Reviews including The Duke Law Review, The Hastings Law Journal, The George Washington Law Review, The Virginia Law Review, and The Columbia Law Review.
A former member of the Duke Blue Devils, he participated each year in the Alabama Law School Faculty-Student Basketball Game. The students retired his jersey at his last Faculty-Student Game in Spring 1994.
Along with other faculty members who have been on the Alabama Law School Faculty for twenty-five years, his portrait hangs in the hall of the school.
A service honoring Professor Gibbons will be held at 10:30 a.m. on May 14, 2002 at Heritage Chapel Funeral Home. Dean Kenneth Randall and other colleagues from The University of Alabama School of Law will present the eulogy and remembrances of his life.

Beatrice Sellers "Aunt Bea"
NORTHPORT - Beatrice Sellers, age 90, died May 14, 2002, at her residence. Services will be held 2 p.m. today, Chapel of Magnolia Chapel Funeral Home Northport with Rev. Tim Tindle officiating. Burial will follow in Tuscaloosa Memorial Park with Magnolia Chapel Funeral Home North directing.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Forest Sellers; sons, Terrell Cannon and Joe Cannon; sister, Edna Ralston and brother, Cecil Brand.
Survivors include daughter, Mildred Burns (Mickey) of Northport; daughters-in-law, Sue Cannon and Barbara Cannon; grandchildren, Charlotte Brown, Jimmy Burns, Ronnie Cannon, Jonie Watkins, Terri Sue Cannon, Rebecca Parker, Zanna Carney, Cindia Cannon and Terrell Cannon III; step-children, Patricia Chaney, Jean Parnell, Teresa Sellers and Buddy Sellers; 21 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be grandsons and nephews.
