NORTHPORT - Thurman O. Beard, age 80, of 12283 Thurmond Road, died June 7, 2002. Services will be held Monday at 1:00 p.m. from Bone Camp United Methodist Church. Rev. Gary Lee will officiate. He is preceded in death by his wife who he dearly missed, Sara Beard, mother, Hester Beard, father, Frank Beard, and brothers, Grover and Joe Beard.
Survivors include daughters, Connie Scarcliff, Mobile; Cherri Koester, Northport; sisters, Nettie Sanders, California; Ethel Hopkins, Northport; Eugenia Beard, Northport; Virginia Gladden, Mississippi; brother, Calvin Beard, Northport; grandchildren, Steven Scarcliff (Kristie), Stephanie Scarcliff, Mobile; Justin and Bailey Koester, Northport; Viola Puckett, a trusted dear, dear friend and loved one who cared for Mr. Beard every day, and longtime "family member" Terri Leslie.
Active pallbearers will be Jimmy Beard, Robert Ogletree, Vincent Puckett, Tommy Beard, Tim Zielinski, Anthony Gladden.
Honorary pallbearers are Dr. Leonard Jones and staff, nurses and aides of Hospice of West Alabama.

TUSCALOOSA - Henry Clay Chastine, 80, Tuscaloosa, died June 9, 2002 in his home. Visitation will be Monday from 6-8 p.m. at Memory Chapel. Graveside services will be held Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. at Tuscaloosa Memorial Park with Ron Wilson officiating. Memory Chapel Funeral Home is directing.
Survivors include his wife, Bebe Joyce Chastine, daughters, Bronwyn O’Hara of Gulf Shores an Teila White (George) of Tuscaloosa; sisters, Loraine Harris, Mary Seals, Dottie Presley (Jim), all of Tuscaloosa; and Victoria Payne (Adolph), Grand Bay; brothers, Allen Chastine (Delores), and Joe Chastine (Peggy).
Mr. Chastine was WWII veteran and a member of First Baptist Church.
Pallbearers will be nephews, Buddy and Robert Harris, Tommy Seale, Joe and Jeff Chastine, Scott and Todd Presley, Adolph, Henry, David and Mike Payne, Bryant Chastine.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Coleman Barrett, parents, Thomas and Dolia Robertson, sister, Earline Davis, and brother, J. D. Robertson.
Survivors include son, Truman Quimby & wife, Janice of Gordo, Ala.; grandchildren, Kevin Quimby (Lisa) and Chad Quimby (Rhonda), all of Gordo, Ala.; two great-grandchildren, Megan and Emilee.
Mrs. Barrett was a homemaker and a well known resident of the Gordo community.

Survivors include his wife of 40 years, Jerry Montgomery Junkin, Gordo, Ala.; daughter, Tonya Junkin Barringer (Frank), Coker, Ala.; sons, Michael T. Junkin, Jr. (Abby), Reform, Ala.; Paul H. Junkin (Jody), Panama City, Fla.; sister, Brenda J. Grammer (William), Carrollton, Ala.; brothers, Larry B. Junkin (Elaine), Tennessee; Raybon Junkin (Virginia), Gordo, Ala.; four grandchildren, Jessie Junkin, Trey Barringer, Paige Barringer and Jordan Junkin, three step grandchildren, Carrie, Tasha and Kelly Beazley, and three grand dogs: Oscar, Felix and Tater.
Mr. Junkin was born November 15, 1941 in Gordo, Alabama to the late Vernie H. and Nora Mae Moss Junkin. He was owner of the automotive dealership, Mike Junkin Ford in Carrollton for 25 years. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather.

Virginia Mauney Hefelfinger
TUSCALOOSA - Virginia Mauney Hefelfinger, 60, died June 8th at her residence in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. A memorial service will be held at Christ Episcopal Church at 11:00 a.m., June 11th, with the Reverend Mike Wyckoff officiating. Visitation with the family will be held immediately following the service in the church parish hall.
She is survived by her husband, David Charles Hefelfinger MD; her sons David Charles Hefelfinger, Jr. (Susan), Michael Wray Hefelfinger (Missy), Ashley Currin Hefelfinger (Susan), her mother Mary Butts Mauney, her brother William Thurman Mauney (Suzy), her brother-in-law Daniel T. Hefelfinger (Ann), her nieces Van Giersch Weston, Beth Mauney Assis, Emily Mauney, Kristin Hefelfinger, and Catherine Claire Hefelfinger, her nephews Richard Giersch IV, Jonathan Mauney, Scott Hefelfinger and Brian Hefelfinger.
Virginia was born in Rome, Georgia and grew up in Charlotte, North Carolina where she was a graduate of Myers Park High School. She graduated from Converse College for ladies in Spartanburg, South Carolina.
She moved to Tuscaloosa, Alabama in 1973, and was very active in Christ Episcopal Church where she served on the Vestry, Altar Guild, Episcopal Church Woman, and was a member of the Daughters of the King. She loved to study the Bible and was appreciated as a special teacher both in the Church and within her home where she taught regularly. She served on the West Alabama Hospice Board, worked at the Community Soup Bowl and in various other volunteer capacities.

Dr. William Nathan Dansby
TUSCALOOSA - Dr. William Nathan Dansby, 84, local dentist and former Chairman of the Tuscaloosa City Board of Education, died Thursday, June 6, 2002, at DCH Regional Medical Center. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, June 12, 2002, at 11:00 A.M. from the Brown Memorial Presbyterian Church with the Reverend Gregory J. Bentley officiating. The body will lie in state one hour prior to the service. Interment will be at Cedar Oak Memorial Park. Professional services provided by Van Hoose and Steele Funeral Home.
Dr. Dansby was preceded in death by his parents, William L. Dansby and Portia Dorcette Canty Dansby, and his sister, Sarah Dansby Pinkney. He is survived by William and Elizabeth Rice of Aliceville and their three daughters: Mechelle, Benidia, and Portia; and a cousin, Theodora Dansby Johnson of Florida.
Born in Mobile, Dr. Dansby was educated in private elementary and secondary schools, including Stillman College (then Stillman Institute). He received the Bachelor of Science Degree from Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, North Carolina, a master’s degree in chemistry from Fisk University in Nashville, Tennessee, and the doctorate in dental surgery from Meharry Medical College, also, in Nashville. He was elected to Beta Kappa Chi and Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity.
A decorated veteran of World War II, Dr. Dansby served with distinction in the United States Army. He was appointed by the Tuscaloosa City Council to the City Board of Education in 1970 and was elected chairman of the Board in 1985. He served on boards of directors of the Black Warrior Council of the Boy Scouts, the Martin Luther King, Jr., School National Network, the Benjamin Barnes YMCA, and the Maude L. Whatley Health Center. He was, also, a member of the Kiwanis and Tuscaloosa Reunion Clubs. An elder at Brown Memorial Presbyterian Church, he was active in work of the Men of the Church, the Endowment Committee, and the Trustee Board.
Pallbearers will be James Holland, Amos Hubbard, Moses Prewitt, Theodore Prude, Dr. Eddie B. Thomas, and Dr. Benjamin Winston. Honorary pallbearers are elders of Brown Memorial Presbyterian Church, Men of Brown Memorial Church; Members of the Tuscaloosa City Board of Education, Stillman College Alumni, Dr. Thomas Alexander, Ms. Rosemary Sanders, and Ms. Billie Spencer.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to the Capital Funds Campaign at Brown Memorial Presbyterian Church.
Viewing hours will begin on Tuesday from 11:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m. in Van Hoose and Steele Funeral Home Chapel.
