Gail enjoyed a life-long interest in the Arts, especially painting, music and dance.
She graduated from Huntsville High School in 1953 at age 16 and entered the University of Alabama majoring in Arts Education. During her undergraduate years at the University she played clarinet in the Million Dollar Band.
Following graduation she taught elementary school in both Volusia County, Fla. and, after her marriage to Paul Skidmore in 1958, in Tuscaloosa County, Ala. Following Paul’s graduation from Law School in 1962 she devoted the next several years primarily to caring for their young daughters, Melanie and Suzanne. When the children entered school the urge to return to the arts was satisfied when she began a series of volunteer and part-time positions in her beloved area of work, culminating in her service for almost twenty years as Executive Director of the Arts and Humanities Council of Tuscaloosa. Her efforts and accomplishments in that position are precisely and beautifully reported in Correspondent Mark Hughes Cobb’s splendid article in the "West Alabama" section of the June 29, 2002 issue of the Tuscaloosa Times. These facts will not be reported in detail herein, however, the article is recommended to readers of this by the family who also thank the News for its publication.
In the years following her retirement from the Arts Council (1998) she enjoyed a return to her painting, travel, collecting antiques and adoring her grandchildren. She was also a partner in Southern Grace Antiques and Gifts with her daughter Suzanne.
During her final illness she was a model of strength, courage and high personal morale to all her family and friends.
She will be sorely missed and yet all who knew her well are grateful for the opportunity and blessing to have known her.
Honorary pallbearers are special friends, Larry Moody, Linda White, Don Heflin, Susanne Brown and co-workers, colleagues and Board Members of Arts and Humanities Council and Bama Theatre, Bill and Carolyn Darden.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to Arts Council of Tuscaloosa for a Gail F. Skidmore Scholarship Fund.
