BERRY - Bobby Scott Rice, age 31, of 14224 Gram Road, died July 2, 2002. Arrangements will be announced later by Magnolia Chapel Funeral Home North.

Jean E. Rice

TUSCALOOSA - Jean E. Rice, age 68, of 4620 18th Avenue East, died July 6, 2002 at DCH Regional Medical Center. Graveside services will be held Monday at 2:00 p.m. from Memory Hill Gardens. Visitation is tonight from 6 – 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Memory Chapel Funeral Home directing.

Jason Brown

COTTONDALE - Jason Brown, 32, died June 25, 2002 at DCH Regional Medical Center. Arrangements will be announced later by Memory Chapel Funeral Home.

Floyd McCaa

CLEVELAND, Ohio - Floyd McCaa, age 51, formerly of Tuscaloosa, died June 26, 2002. Services will be held Wednesday, July 3, 2002, at 11 a.m. in the Chapel of Rollins’ Mortuary. Rev. Willie Glen Fulgham will officiate. Burial will follow in West Highland Cemetery with Rollins’ Mortuary directing.

Survivors include mother, Mattiae McCaa, Tuscaloosa; daughters, Shundrea and Monica of Cleveland, Ohio; step-son, Brian Hooks (Valeria) of Cleveland, Ohio; brother, Willie McCaa, Tuscaloosa; sisters, Mattie Gassway, Selma, Edna Dawson and JoAnn Jones of Tuscaloosa and Patricia McCaa of Germany; mother-in-law, Ruth Woods of Cleveland Ohio; sister-in-law, Annette Johnson of Cleveland, Ohio; grandchildren, Christopher, Christina and Kyler.

The family will receive friends in the Chapel of Rollins’ Mortuary tonight from 7-8 p.m.

He attended the Tuscaloosa School System, where he was a member of Druid High School Class of 1971. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps and attended Stillman College.

David Wilkinson Phipps

TUSCALOOSA - David Wilkinson Phipps died at DCH Regional Medical Center on June 28, 2002. Services will be held at the First United Methodist Church of Tuscaloosa at 2 p.m. on Monday, July 1. The family will gather for internment at Tuscaloosa Memorial Park prior to the service and a reception will be held at the church following the service.

Mr. Phipps was born on August 26, 1923 in Huntington, West Virginia. He Married Anna "Bruce" Fannon on August 18. 1945. They had three daughters: Nancy Nicholson (Nick) of Burke, Virginia, Deborah Beasley (Jerry) and Betsy Costello (Chip) both of Littleton, Colorado. Mr. Phipps received a Master’s Degree, with an emphasis in accounting, from the University of Denver in August 1948. He and his family returned to Huntington, West Virginia in 1949. They moved to Ashland, Kentucky in 1950, where he owned several Dairy Cheer stores, an early version of Dairy Queen. He returned to his lifelong love of teaching at the University of Denver as an Associate Professor in 1960. Mr. Phipps became the Vice Chancellor of the University of Denver on April 1, 1971. He moved to Tuscaloosa on January 1, 1975 where he became the Financial Vice President of the University of Alabama. "Bruce" died in Tuscaloosa on July 7, 1982.

David Phipps married Judy Forsyth Burchfield on April 22, 1984 in Tuscaloosa. Her son, Howard Burchfield, Jr. of Birmingham, Ala. and her daughter, Julia Hayslip (Chris) of Tuscaloosa completed the family. Judy and David had eighteen wonderful years together. He retired from the University of Alabama in August 1988.

Other family members include his sister, Sallie Elkins (Enos) of Littleton, Colorado, his brother, John Phipps of Knoxville Tenn., his cousin, Ben Hayes of Ocala, Fla. five nieces, eight grandchildren and one great granddaughter.

Active pallbearers are Roy Hubbert, Richard Norton, Ben Sherrod, Clyde Pearce, Dr. Hiram Johnson, Jim DeFord, Chris Kyle, Emmett Dendy, Dr. David Hefelfinger, Dr. Barney Cargile, Brad Almond and Tom Kloess. Honorary pallbearers are Lee Bible Class, Alabama Emmaus Community, Kairos of West Alabama, Suzanne Kloess, Lyman and Janet Mason, Echo Aycock, Don Baker, Chris and Bake Kyle, Emmett and Glenda Dendy, Eloise and Russell Stockman, Rebecca Culpepper, Dr. John Burnum, Dr. Ronald McCormack and Dr. Jeanne Lipscomb.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials be made to the First United Methodist Church of Tuscaloosa or Kairos of West Alabama. Donations for Kairos should also be sent to the church.

Marion Sam Bice

TUSCALOOSA - Marion Sam Bice, age 78, of 13 Beech Hills, died July 3, 2002, at DCH Regional Medical Center. Graveside services will be held 1 pm Sunday, Tuscaloosa Memorial Park with Rev. Alan Head officiating. Heritage Chapel Funeral Home is assisting family.

He was preceded in death by father, Fred Bice, Mother, Tina Bice; daughter, Wanda Bice Hayslip and brother, Fred Bice, Jr.

Survivors include his wife, Nita S. Bice; daughter, Marion Bice Reed; grandchildren, Sarah V. Reed and Emily B. Reed; sons-in-law, Tommy Reed, Chris Hayslip; nephews, Carey Lewis, Jerry Lewis, David Skinner and other nieces and nephews.

Honorary pallbearers are life long family, friends and neighbors.

Martha Ada (Sexton) Fischelli

TUSCALOOSA - Our beloved Mother, Sister, Grandmother and Aunt, Martha Ada (Sexton) Fischelli died peacefully on June 25th at 4:30 a.m. Ada was born January 16, 1912 in the family home her father built in 1905 at 1202 12th St. in Tuscaloosa. She is survived by two sons, Vincent and Jeanne (daughter-in-law) of Garland, TX and Robert USAF Col. (Ret.) and Elaine (daughter-in-law) of Brandon, FL, Sue Laycock (Sister) of Tuscaloosa, Camille Baker (sister-in-law) of Alexandria, VA, 10 grandchildren living in Texas, Vincent Jr., Dwayne (and Tammy), Lisa (York), Melaine (and Dale Wilson), Joy (and Scott Woodley), Carla Jo (and Ken Smith), Jeff (and Angela) Fischelli, Paula Bales of Austin TX and Natalie (and Richard Patino) of Dallas, two grandsons in Brandon, Florida, Anthony and Andrew Fischelli, 17 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren.

She resided in Brooklyn, NY with her husband Vincent B. Fischelli, an Alabama alumni, until his death in 1956 when she moved back to Tuscaloosa to her parents’ home (James R. and Mattie Sexton). At different times she lived with both sons and for the past three years she lived with her sister Sue Laycock and niece Linda Laycock, who has been her primary care giver in the last years.

She is also survived by many nieces and nephews including, USAF Col. (Ret.) James W. Laycock of Birmingham AL, Margaret Stevenson of Tuscaloosa, Martha Oliveri of Brooklyn, NY, Cathy, Debbie, Bubba, Woody and Bobby Sexton of Tuscaloosa, Robert Deese Sexton of Alexandria, LA, George W. Sexton of Green sboro NC, Jim Breland of Albertville AL, Bill Sexton of Panama City FL, Carolyn Perkins of Columbus Miss., William and Douglas Baker of Alexandria, VA.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Three brothers Manley, Comer, George and two sisters, Alberta (Kidd) and Bobbie (Breland).

A special thanks to Dr. George Miller, the DCH staff and the West Alabama Hospice staff for their loving, thoughtful and professional care and to Shiryl Bruner and "CC" for their special love and visits each day.

A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held at Trinity United Methodist Church, 729 Paul W. Bryant Dr., Tuscaloosa on July 6, 2002 at 11:00 a.m. Brother Alan Head and Brother Dan Kilgore are officiating. Immediately following the Memorial Service there is a reception at the Trinity United Methodist Church with food provided by the Christian Ministry of Dwight Whinery of Chick-Fil-A of Tuscaloosa.

In lieu of flowers the family request donations be made to Trinity United Methodist Church of West Alabama Hospice in her honor.

Ada was a joy and inspiration to her family and all that knew her. There is a big hole in our lives but her memories fill our hearts. We can’t imagine life without her…but her spirit will always shine the corner of 12th Street.

Brett Alan Achberger

NORTHPORT - Brett Alan Achberger, age 19, of 5303 Imperial River Court, died July 5, 2002. A Memorial Service will be held Monday, July 8, 2002 at 6:00 p.m. from Magnolia Chapel of Northport.

Survivors include parents, Donn and Peggy Achberger, Northport, Ala.; sister, Katie Achberger, Northport, Ala.; grandparents, Melvin and Dorothy Achberger, Akron, Ohio; William and Margaret McDaniel, Waco, Texas; aunts, uncles, cousins and other relatives.

Honorary pallbearers are Strategic Metrics Inc., Kiddie College and Tusc Swim Club.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to your favorite charity.

Willie James Ray, Sr.

JERSEY CITY, N. J. - Mr. Willie James Ray, Sr., age 62 of Jersey City, New Jersey, a former native of Forkland, Alabama passed June 27, 2002 at Christ Hospital, Jersey City, N. J. Funeral Services will be held Saturday, July 6, 2002 at 1:00 p.m. from the First United Baptist Church, Forkland, Alabama. Rev. Robert Davis, officiating. Interment church cemetery. Larkin and Scott Funeral Directors of Demopolis, Alabama entrusted with arrangements.

David P. Poe, Jr. "Pogie"

COKER - David P. Poe, Jr. "Pogie", 59, died July 9, 2002 at his home. Services will be held at Memory Chapel, Friday at 10 a.m. Burial will follow in Memory Hill Gardens. Rev. James Walker, and Rev. Sammy Bell will officiate. Visitation will be tonight from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home. Memory Chapel Funeral Home is directing.

He is preceded in death by his father, Preston Poe, Sr., and birth mother, Dorothy Ann Poe.

Survivors include his wife, Bonnie Poe of Coker; step-sons, Shane Willmon (Laura) of Ill., Greg Willmon of Calif., Darryl Young (Laura) of Ill., and Jamison Young (Stephanie) of Ill.; sister, Linda Acker (Hermon) of Holt; mother, Jessie McCulley Poe, nephews, Billy Acker (Kristy) of Tuscaloosa, and Sam Acker (Dona) of Coaling.

David was employed by BF Goodrich and an active member of URW and USWA for 36 years of which the last 15 years he was the Pension and Insurance Representative for Local 351. David was a member of Hopewell Baptist Church and a Graduate of Holt High School, Class of 1961. Davis touched the lives of many people. He was a loving husband and will be deeply missed.

Pallbearers will be Steve Evans, J.D. Stephens, Buddy Adams, Gene Hill, Dale Banks, Frank Kelly, Dennis Hutchins, and Bob Smith.

Honorary Pallbearers will be Ron Ethridge, Harold Householder, Paschel Prickett, Dicky and Peggy Hoagland, Larry "Bean" Garner, Walter Crownover, Kenneth Walters, Aaron Waldrop, Jimmy and Susan Price , Malcolm McCracken, Darnell McCracken, Paul and Millie Hyche, Carolyn Banks, Shirley Adams, Eleanor Stephens, Patty Kelly, Jan Hutchins, Joyce Smith, All Active and Retired Members of URW and USWA Local 351, and Office Workers of Office Bargaining Unit, and BF Goodrich Credit Union Employees, and Employees of Foodmax in Northport.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to Hospice of West Alabama.

Dr. Joseph Sullivan Bolt

TUSCALOOSA - Dr. Joseph Sullivan Bolt, 81, died July 9, 2002 at DCH Regional Medical Center. Services will be at 11 a.m. on July 13, 2002 at Canterbury Chapel Episcopal Church. Heritage Chapel Funeral Home is directing.

Donald Mitchell

TUSCALOOSA - Donald Mitchell, of 2722 35th St. E., died July 9, 2002 at DCH Regional Medical Center in Tuscaloosa. Services will be held at Heritage Chapel, Saturday at 11 a.m. Burial will follow in Tuscaloosa Memorial Park. Complete arrangements later by Heritage Chapel. Visitation is Friday from 7-9 p.m. at the funeral home. Heritage Chapel Funeral Home is directing.

Morris "Junior Brooks" Turner, Jr.

COTTONDALE - Morris "Junior Brooks" Turner, Jr., died July 4, 2002, at DCH Regional Medical Center. Services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, St. Paul Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Parham Ridge Memorial Gardens with Van Hoose and Steele Funeral Home directing. Visitation will be Friday 11:30 a.m.-6 p.m. at the funeral home. The body will lie in state one hour prior to service.

John W. Hulsey, Jr.

BIG SANDY COMMUNITY - John W. Hulsey, Jr., 67, died July 9, 2002 at DCH Regional Medical Center in Tuscaloosa. Services will be held at Memory Chapel , today at 4 p.m. Rev. James Parker will officiate. Entombment will be in the Chapel of Memories Mausoleum in Memory Hill Gardens. Visitation will be one hour prior to service at Memory Chapel. Memory Chapel Funeral Home is directing.

He is preceded in death by his father, John W. Hulsey, Sr.

Survivors include his wife, Martha; sons, Richard Hulsey (Tina) of Mathison, MS., and Stephen Hulsey (Jennifer) of Carrollton, AL; sisters, Ardith Mills of Demopolis, and Cherry Jones of Birmingham; brother, Randall Hulsey of Mobile; mother, Dorothy Hulsey of Tuscaloosa; seven grandchildren; two aunts; and numerous cousins.

Pallbearers will be Greg Mills, Tim Mills, Shane Ballard, Hubert Parker, Arthur Parker, Aaron Parker, Eugene Parker, and Chester Brewer.

Honorary pallbearers are Gene and Fran Richardson, Dr. William Hill, Dr. Douglas Reynolds, Nurses on 6N., and Winn Dixie Employees.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to donor’s choice.
