NORTHPORT - Newman Estelle Shirley, 85, died Dec. 1, 2000, at DCH Regional Medical Center. Services are Monday at 10 a.m. at Macedonia United Methodist Church. The Rev. Michael Skelton, the Rev. Paul Peeples and Dr. Jack R. Brown will officiate. Visitation is tonight from 6-8. The body will lie in state one hour prior to the service. Magnolia Chapel Funeral Home of Northport is directing.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Lonnie L. Shirley, and son, Lonnie Lee Shirley Jr.
Survivors include daughter, Naomia Brown (Jack), of Northport; granddaughter, Beth Sherman (Mark), of Dallas, Texas; grandson, Brett (Tracy), of Northport; great-granddaughters, Rachel and Jenna Sherman, of Dallas, Texas.
Mrs. Shirley was a lifelong resident of Tuscaloosa County. She had been a member of the Macedonia United Methodist Church for more than 60 years.
Pallbearers will be Hillary Shirley, Robert Shirley, Johnny Shirley, Jerry Turner, Randy Booth and Tommy Brown.
Honorary pallbearers are the staff of Estes North Health Care Facility, family, friends and neighbors of the Macedonia and Carroll's Creek communities.

Mattie Benson Smith
LAUREL, Miss. - Mattie Benson Smith, 96, formerly of Bellamy, died Nov. 29, 2000. Services are Monday at 2 p.m. at the Morning Star Baptist Church in Bellamy. The body will lie in state at the funeral home this afternoon from 2-7 p.m. Burial will take place in Elmwood Memorial Gardens. McInnis Mortuary of Livingston is directing.

TUSCALOOSA - James L. Griffin, 71, #22 Circlewood, went to meet Jesus on Dec. 9, 2000, at DCH Regional Medical Center. Serivices will be at Memory Chapel on Tuesday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. John Stephens, the Rev. Mike Bell and the Rev. Victor Hutchins officiating. Burial will follow in Memory Hill Gardens. Visitation is tonight from 7-9 p.m. at the funeral home. He is preceded in death by his father, John Wiley Griffin; mother, Della Lou Griffin; brothers, Otis Griffin, Aubrey Griffin and Obie Griffin; sister, Tia Sumner.
Survivors include his wife, Willa Dean Griffin; sons, Dennis James Griffin and wife, Cathy Griffin, and Donald Wade Griffin and wife, T.C. Griffin; sister, Jean Fields; grandchildren, Maria Griffin, Vanessa Griffin, Aaron Griffin and Amanda Griffin.

She is preceded in death by her son, Billy Ray Snow; grandson, Danny Ray Snow.
Survivors include her husband, Van Snow, New Lexington Community; daughters, Martha (Tommy) McCool, Northport, and Bonnie (Earl) Pendley of New Lexington Community; sisters, Irene Ciecro of Adamsville, Franes Pugh of Reform, Lucille Taylor of Coker, Marie Swiney of Samantha and Louise Cannon of Northside; brother, Charles Sanford of Adamsville; nine grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; one great great grandchild.
William L. Thomas
NORTHPORT - William L. "Buddy" Thomas, 77, 14449 Troy Trimm Road, died Dec. 7, 2000, at his residence.Graveside services were held on Sunday at 2 p.m. at Goodwater Cemetery with the Rev. Jerry Montgomery officiating. Magnolia Chapel of Northport is directed.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Alma Lee Thomas and step-son, Wilford "Buck" Goree.
Survivors include his daughters, Doris Trimm (Troy), Northport, Diane Prestriedge (Jerry) Mabank, Texas, Alice McDaniel (Glen) Tuscaloosa, Donna Terlouw (John) Tuscaloosa, Mary Walter, Akron and Margie Hagler (Bill) Tuscaloosa; sisters, Jean Crawford of Northport, and Betty Tatum (Jim) Georgia; two step-daughters, Hazel Bozeman of Northport and Nelline Averette of Moundville; numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren; special thanks to Jenny Ledbetter for the care and comfort given to Buddy.
Buddy owned and operated Buddy's Lawnmower Fix-it Shop on 16th Street.

TUSCALOOSA - Rev. John William Frank Skinner, 77, 6601 Keenes Mill Road, died August 29, 2001 at DCH Regional Medical Center. Services will be held at the Chapel of First Baptist Church on Friday, at 11 a.m., with Rev. Vail Fontenot officiating.
Burial will follow in Tuscaloosa Memorial Park. Heritage Chapel Funeral Home is directing.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. F. Skinner; sister, Elizabeth S. Ball.
Survivors include his brother, Heywood F. Skinner, nieces and nephews, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Ball (Barbara), Mr. and Mrs. Jeff Beard (Sara), Ms. Betty Ball, Mr. and Mrs. Sammy Martin (Margaret), Mr. and Mrs. Milton Slauson (Linda).

Army Chaplain in Korea 1950-1952. Pastored Alabama 1952-1962 plus half time Chaplain Tuscaloosa VA Hospital. Assigned full time in Topeka, Kansas VA Hospital 1962-1967.
Returned by request of Tuscaloosa VA Hospital for full time 1967-1974. Regular substitute teacher at Eastwood Junior High School.
Left VA to study for doctors degree and Pastored until I was hit by a car while walking November, 2, 1978. After the injury, I was still a member of the World mission Conference team. I now work helping young people relating to drugs and alcohol and other items. I worked with alcohol positions in Topeka and have studied in a number of Universities pertaining to this. I attended the 2000 SBC convention in Orlando and attended the University of Utah in Salt Lake City for study again this year. Attended the 2001 University of Utah conference on drug and alcohol dependencies.
Pallbearers will be Grady Friday, Bill Walker, Jr., Bobby Blakeney, John Sumner, Norman Carlson, Charles R. Brown, Lee Woods, Frank Horner.
Honorary pallbearers are Dr. Robert Bentley, Friends at Duncanville Baptist Church, Members of American Legion, Mrs. Debbie Watson.
