Ethel Brown

NORTHPORT - Ethel Keller Brown, 89, Estes Nursing Home, died May 30, 2001 at DCH Regional Medical Center. Services will be held at Sunset Funeral Home, Friday, at 1 p.m., with the Rev. Wayne Styres officiating. Burial will follow in Mt. Olive Church Cemetery. Sunset Funeral Home is directing.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Patton Brown; parents, Virgil and Bessie Sutton Keller and Virginia Keller Wincze.

Survivors includes a brother, William (Buddy) Keller of Columbus, Ga., Nephews, Gary W. Wincze of Northport, Craig Keller, Columbus, Ga., and Clyde Colburn, Jr., of Cottondale; nieces, Becky Keller, of Columbus, Ga., and Patti Taylor.

Attended Tuscaloosa High School and was a Member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church.

Honorary pallbearers are Gulf States Retiree Club and Mt. Olive community.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to Mount Olive Baptist Church.

Michael Arnold Bell

TUSCALOOSA - Michael Arnold Bell of 1124 16th Street was called home to be with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Saturday, May 26, 2001 at DCH Regional Medical Center. Celebration of Life Services will be on Saturday, June 2, 2001 at 1 p.m., at the Mt. Sinai Baptist Church of Duncanville with Pastor Claude Prince, Sr., officiating. He will be laid to rest at Cedar Oak Memorial Park with Rollins' Mortuary, Inc., directing. He will lie in state at the church one hour prior to services. Visitation for the public will be Friday, June 1, 2001 from 10-6 p.m. Also, family hour will be from 7-8 p.m.

Special thanks to Dr. Hinton, Dr. Fritz, 6th floor Nursing Station of DCH Regional Medical Center and DCH Cancer Treatment Center.

Edward E. Wilson, Sr.

SHARPSBURG, Ga. – Edward E. Wilson, Sr., formerly of Tuscaloosa passed away Thursday, May 31st at the age of 75.

Survivors include his wife, Doris Wilson; sons, Edward E. (Denise) Wilson, of Sharpsburg, Ga., Scott L. (Twilla) Wilson, of Benton, Miss.; daughter, Judy Wilson of Cornith, Miss; sisters, Reba Koeppel and Betty Hamner of Tuscaloosa, grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Mr. Wilson was preceded in death by a son, Michael Wilson.

Mr. Wilson served in the Navy during World War II. He was a graduate of the University of Alabama and retired as president of Hurd Lock Mfg. Company, Green ville, Tenn.

A graveside service will be held on Saturday, June 2nd at 2 p.m., c.s.t. in Tuscaloosa Memorial Park. Family and friends please meet at the cemetery.

James W. Whatley

ATHENS Ga. - Coach James W. Whatley, 88, a longtime resident of Athens, Ga., died May 31, 2001.

A native of Tuscaloosa, Ala., Coach Whatley was the son of the late Versho Wayne and Pearl Elizabeth Colvard Whatley. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II as a Lieutenant. Coach Whatley was a graduate of the University of Alabama. He played professional football for 3 years on the Brooklyn Dodgers team as a tackle. Coach Whatley was the retired head baseball coach and also served as an assistant basketball and football coach at the University Of Georgia. He was a member of the Athens First United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Eliza Mae Masterson Whatley; a sister, Mamie Coley Whatley; and a brother, Versho Wayne Whatley Jr.

Graveside funeral services will be held at Evergreen Memorial Park Sunday, June 3, 2001 at 3:30 p.m. with the Rev. Dr. Bill Britt and the Rev. Grady Wigley officiating. Honorary pallbearers will be the Athletic Department and all former personnel that coached with him at The University of Georgia.

Coach Whatley is survived by his wife, Eddie Lou Young Whatley, Athens, Ga.; a step daughter and her husband, Melinda and Randy Strausser, Jacksonville, Fla.; a granddaughter, Lindsay Strausser, Jacksonville, Fla.; a nephew and his wife James Marion and Nancy Carolyn Gilmore, Birmingham; nephews, William Masterson, Alpharetta, Ga., and Robert Masterson, Alpharetta, Ga.; niece, Cathy Masterson, Atlanta, Ga.; great – nephew, James Marion Gilmore, Jr., Birmingham; great niece, Carolyn June Gilmore, Anniston.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the UGA Foundation, Coach Jim Whatley Baseball Foundation, P.O. Box 1472, Athens, Ga., 30603.

Bridges Funeral Home, Athens, Ga., is in charge of arrangements.

Maxine Shirley

NORTHPORT - Maxine Shirley, 62, died June 1, 2001 at DCH Regional Medical Center. Graveside services will be held Sunday, June 3, 2001 at 2 p.m., in Sunset Memorial Park. Visitation is from 6-8 p.m., at the funeral home. Sunset Funeral Home is directing,

She is preceded in death by her father, Clyde Massey.

Survivors include her husband, James Shirley; three sons, Eddie Shirley (Dana), Mark Shirley (Susan) and Jarrod Shirley (Amy); brothers, Jimmy Massey (Carolyn) and Troy Massey (Sandra); mother, Frances Massey; grandchildren, Alana Shirley, Matthew Shirley, Natalie Shirley, and Sara Oswalt.

She was a member of Five Points Baptist Church.

Pallbearers will be nephews.

Honorary pallbearers are Staff of Dr. Lucy King, Dr. Omar Baker, staff of the Acute Cardiac Unit at DCH, members of Five Points Baptist Church, and Linda Montgomery.

Mattie Harbin Newton

FAYETTE - Mattie Harbin Newton, 88, 722 Co. Road 26 North, died June 6, 2001 at Fayette Medical Center. Services will be held at Nelson Funeral Home Chapel, Sunday at 2 p.m., with the Rev. Ed Jenkins and Dr. Dale Mitchell officiating. Burial will follow in Pleasant Hill Baptist Church Cemetery. Visitation is Sunday afternoon from 12-2 p.m., at the funeral home. Nelson Funeral Home of Fayette is directing.

She is preceded in death by her husband, James E. Newton in 1988; brothers, Thomas Harbin, Leo Harbin, Howard Harbin; sister, Eulene Newton.

Survivors include her daughters, Bonnie Jenkins (Gaynus), Fayette, Dorothy Pierce (Charles), Haleyville, and Dana Underwood (Clay), Fayette; six grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren.

Long time member and Sunday School teacher of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church. Taught in the Fayette County School System for 32 years.

Pallbearers are Dale Blackburn, David Chambless, Gene Colburn, Earl Walton, Joe Whitley and Douglas Berry.

Ruby S. Montgomery

TUSCALOOSA - Ruby S. Montgomery, 83, 2016 3rd Court East, died May 31, 2001 at DCH Regional Medical Center. Services will be held at Memory Chapel, Sunday, June 3, 2001 at 2 p.m. Burial will follow in Tuscaloosa Memorial Park. Visitation is tonight from 6-8 p.m. Memory Chapel Funeral Home is directing.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Liston R. Montgomery.

Survivors include her daughter, Sharon M. Roberts (Bobby) of Mobile; sons, Gene Montgomery (Judy), Tuscaloosa, Larry Montgomery (June), Vancleave, Miss., Bobby Montgomery (Faye), Vancleave, Miss.; sisters, Lera Hammond, Baton Rouge, La., Marjorie Flood (Jack), Tuscaloosa; brother, Preston Strickland (Hazel), Tuscaloosa; 12 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren; a host of nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers will be her grandsons.

Honorary pallbearers are friends and neighbors of 3rd Ct. E., staff of Forest Manor Nursing Facility, staff of DCH Emergency Dept., staff of DCH 4th Floor South, Dr. Eugene Alldredge.

Elizabeth Freeman Hurst

TUSCALOOSA - Elizabeth Freeman Hurst, 82, LaRocca Nursing Home, died June 1, 2001 at DCH Regional Medical Center. Services will be at Saint Mattias Episcopal Church. Burial will follow in Memory Hills Gardens. Memory Hill Chapel Funeral Home is directing.

Julian Thomas Holifield

MARION - Julian Thomas "Shorty" Holifield, 86, died June 1, 2001 at his residence. Services will be held at Kirk Funeral Home Chapel, Sunday, June 3, 2001 at 3 p.m. with the Rev. Lonnie Plunkett and the Rev. Jerry Burton. Burial will follow in Bethlehem United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m., Saturday, June 2, at the funeral home. Kirk Funeral Home of Marion is directing.

Survivors include his wife, Shirley Johnson Holifield, Marion; one step daughter, Nancy Troha (Mickey), Selma; two step sons, Rick Harrison, Mobile and Randy Harrison (Trish) Pensacola, Fla.; sisters, Louise Sims (Rufus), Montgomery, Eloise Phelps (Ben), Marion; brothers, Davee Holifield (Lucille), Theodore, Dr. Reese Holifield (Angela), Demopolis, Buford Holifield (Joann), Columbus, Ga.; eight grandchildren, one great grandchild.

Anne Very Hancock

TUSCALOOSA - Anne Very Hancock, 84, 800 Rice Valley Road, died June 1, 2001 at her residence. Memorial services will be held at Westerfelt Chapel of The First Presbyterian Church, Sunday at 3 p.m., with the Rev. Charles Durham officiating. Burial will follow in Vero Beach, Fla. Magnolia Chapel Funeral Home of Northport handling the arrangements.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Roy R. Hancock and parents, Dexter and Mary Very.

Survivors include two daughters, Nancy Mooney, Tacoma, Wash., Ardis Hancock, Northport; one son, Col. Dexter Hancock (Shelly), Tuscaloosa, four grandchildren, Elizabeth and Emily Hancock, Jack Mooney and Bethany Brendlinger.

Mrs. Hancock graduated from Penn State University and the first female to receive a Degree in Engineering from Penn State. She was a member of The First Presbyterian Church of Tuscaloosa and a member of Kappa Alpha Theta.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to Neighbors Helping Neighbors, 2001 6th Street, Tuscaloosa, Ala. 35401.

Jean Griffin Fields

TUSCALOOSA - Jean Griffin Fields, of 3 Arlington Drive in Tuscaloosa, died May 30, 2001, at Druid City Hospital. A memorial service will be held at Memory Chapel Funeral Home on Saturday, June 2nd, 2001, at 2:00 p.m., with Brother James Olive and Reverend Moses Madison officiating, with graveside services immediately following at Memory Hills Gardens Cemetery. Visitation is Friday from 7:00 – 9:00 p.m., at Memory Chapel Funeral Home.

She is preceded in death by her parents, John Wiley Griffin and Della Golden Griffin, brothers J. Otis Griffin and James L. Griffin, and sister Tia Griffin Sumner.

Survivors include her husband, George Daniel Fields, Sr., sons George Daniel Fields, Jr. (Lydia), and John Arnett Fields (Diane), daughter Minunie Fields Swaim (Mort), all of Tuscaloosa, and grandchildren Monica Fields Rodgers (Dan) of Montgomery and Brandi Carol Fields, Monnish Jean-Ruth Swaim, Missy Meagan Fields, April Averett, Josh Montgomery, Jeremy Montgomery, and David Montgomery, all of Tuscaloosa.

Mrs. Fields was born and raised in Tuscaloosa and graduated from Tuscaloosa High School. She was a lover of children, animals, flowers, antique collecting and the creative arts. She was an award-winning artist, specializing in painting and ceramics. She was an active member of the Tuscaloosa Bottle Club and Tuscaloosa Garden Club.

Pallbearers are Donald Griffin, Tim Wall, Allen Owen, Jim Wilson Phillips, Bobby Sumner, Alan Wall, David Tucker, and Johnny Reynolds.

Mort Swaim, P.C., and especially Dr. Felipe Samaniego, Dr. Jean Bernard Durand, Dr. Zhiyong Li, Kathleen Shannon McAdams, R.N., and Rose-Mary Ashworth, R.N., all of M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, Houston, TX., friends and neighbors of Shady Dale, and friends and neighbors of Arlington Drive.

Joel F. Clement

WINFIELD - Joel F. Clement, 90, died Thursday, May 31, 2001 at Carraway Methodist Medical Center in Birmingham. Services will be held at Winfield First United Methodist Church, Saturday at 2 p.m. Burial will follow in Cedar Tree Cemetery, Hackleburg. The body will lie in state from 1-2 p.m. Miles Funeral Home is directing.

Jobie E. Brownlee

ETHELSVILLE - Jobie E. Brownlee, 94, 692 Delma Road, died June 1, 2001 at his residence. Services will be held at Mineral Springs Baptist Church, Sunday, June 3, 2001 at 2 p.m. Burial will follow in Mineral Springs Church Cemetery. Louise Cook Baswell

MILLPORT - Louise Cook Baswell, 82, 3434 Fernbank Rd., died Thursday, May 31, 2001 at her residence. Services will be held at Dowdle Funeral Home Chapel, Sunday, June 3, 2001 at 2 p.m. Burial will follow in Ebenezer Cemetery, Lamar County. Visitation is tonight from 6-9 p.m. at the funeral home. Lotty Wiggins
