COTTONDALE - Neely Allen Foster , 68, 14228 Ashborough Dr., died July 27, 2001 at DCH Regional Medical Center. Graveside services will be held in Tuscaloosa Memorial Park on Sunday at 4 p.m. with the Rev. Todd Burkhalter and Rev. Gary Youngblood officiating. Heritage Chapel Funeral Home is directing.

He is preceded in death by his mother, Wilma Powell Foster .

Survivors include his wife, Marilyn Tibbs Foster , Cottondale; father, John D. Foster , Anniston; son, John Charles Foster , Cottondale and wife Janet; daughter, Kaye Foster Dunlap, Charlotte, N. C. and husband Rusty; brother, John Edwin Foster , Cottondale, and wife Hilda; mother-in-law, Irene Tibbs, Coaling.

Pallbearers will be Andy Foster , Walter Boyd, Scott Ryan, Jimmy Tibbs, Jarrod Sanders and Steve Curtin.

Honorary pallbearers are 1949 American Legion Post 34, Alabama State Championship Team, Dr. Lydia Stefanescu and staff, Dr. Pamela Hughes and staff of The Cancer Care Center of Tuscaloosa, Donald Ryan, members of the Coaling Baptist Church, Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Curtin, Jr., Mr. and Mrs. Gene Dunlap, Employees of Duckworth-Morris Acordia.

Ellis Shirley

GORDO - Ellis Shirley, 57, of 30 Grover Pate Rd., died July 28, 2001 at His Residence. Services will be held at Flatwoods Baptist Church on Monday July 30 at 2:00 p.m. Burial will follow in Mt. Olivet "Beaver Dam" Cemetery.

Visitation is tonight from 6-8 at the funeral home. Skelton Funeral Home is Directing.

Jessie Lee Rayfield

SELMA - Jessie Lee Rayfield, 86, died July 28, 2001 at Selma, Ala. Graveside services will be held in Marion Cemetery on Monday July 30th at 10:00 a.m. with the Rev. Marvin Ennis officiating.

Visitation is tonight from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home. Kirk Funeral Home of Marion is directing.

She is survived by one daughter, Jean Parrish of Selma; one son, Lucius Rayfield (Gayle) of Marion; one brother, Marvin Keener Moore (Margerite) of Ashburn, Va.; grandchildren, Allen Rayfield (Lisa) of Marion, Kim Rayfield of Sarosota, Fla., Lisa Huffman (William) of Selma and Andrea Cathey (Bruce) of Montgomery.

Mary J. Mann

TUSCALOOSA - Mary J. Mann, Grand Ole Age, 10113 Sexton Bend Road, died July 27, 2001 at Northport Medical Center. Services will be held at St. John Catholic Church on Monday at 10 a.m., with Father Michael White, Deacon Frank Slapike officiating. Burial will follow at 2:30 p.m. in Green wood Cemetery, Montgomery. Visitation is Monday from 9 a.m. – 10 p.m. at the church. Magnolia Chapel Funeral Home South is directing.

Survivors include her son, Frank Mann, Jr., Tuscaloosa; brother, Robert J. Lawrence, Columbus, Ga., grandchildren, Hope Elizabeth Holemon (Jeff), Joy Anglea Smith (Reggie) and Frank Mann III (Katherine); great grandchildren, Brant Smith, Nicki Allen and Megan Smith.

Pallbearers will be Woody Browder, Lewis Fitts, Ronnie Giles, Ted Jackson, William Lanford, Doug Hollyhand, Dr. Rufus Partlow, Billy Prout, Hamit Tosyali, Dr. Jerry White, Dick Miles.

Honorary pallbearers are Dorothy Williams, Charlene Pierce, Dennis Harkey, Charles A. Homer T. Hubbard Sr.

COTTONDALE - Homer Terry Hubbard, Sr., 87, of 14853 Kepple Loop, died July 27, 2001 at his residence. Services will be held today at 2:00 p.m. at Memory Chapel Funeral Home with the Rev. Herbert Davis officiating. Visitation will be from 1-2 p.m. at the funeral home. Memory Chapel Funeral Home is directing.

He is preceded in death by his daughter, Annette Hubbard Payne.

He is survived by his wife, Ella Mae Hubbard, Cottondale; Daughters, Jeanette Givens, Coaling; Sons, Dr. Dale Hubbard, Cottondale, Terry Hubbard, Birmingham; 11 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; Friends, Harold Pierce and all friends from Coaling and Cottondale.

Homer Hubbard had a marriage of 66 years to Ella Mae Hubbard, Homer worked as a welder with Gulf States Paper Corporation and retired after 21 years of Employment.

His Hobbies included hunting and fishing.

Homer would want to be remembered as a very loving and giving husband and parent.

James Franklin Blakney

BIRMINGHAM - James Franklin Blakney, 76, died Friday July 27, 2001. Services will be held at Miles Funeral Home Chapel today at 2:00 p.m. Burial will follow in Berryhill Cemetery. Visitation is Sunday morning from 11:00 a.m. until service time. Miles Funeral Home of Winfield is directing.

John S. Stewart

TUSCALOOSA - John S. Stewart, 65 of 3324 36th St., died July 24, 2001 at his home. Funeral Services will be held Tuesday, July 31, 2001 at 2 p.m., from Rollins' Mortuary Chapel. Rev. Floyd Ball will officiate. Burial will follow in Cedar Oak Memorial Park with Rollins' Mortuary directing.

Ellis Shirley

GORDO - Ellis Shirley, 57, 30 Grover Pate Road, died July 28, 2001 at his residence. Services will be held at Flatwoods Baptist Church today at 2 p.m., with Rev. James Floyd Posey and Rev. Danny Powell officiating. Burial will follow in Mt. Olivet "Beaver Dam" Cemetery. The body will lie in state one hour prior to service. Skelton Funeral Home of Reform is directing.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Julius Ross Shirley and Gladys Adell Shirley; brother, Archie Shirley.

Survivors include his wife, Diane Shirley of Gordo; sons, Ken Shirley and Kevin "Early" Shirley, both of Gordo; sisters, Peggy Snider (Delaine), Faye Marlowe (J.L.), Jean Clark (Ronnie), all of Gordo; brothers, Wayne Shirley of Northport, Winford "Snake" Shirley (Reba) of Gordo; grandchild, Elizabeth "Sweet Pea" Shirley of McSham.

Mr. Ellis was employed by Billings Processing Plant. He was a retired Mental Health Worker of 30 years for S. D. Allen, a Veteran of the U. S. Army and National Guard and he was a life long resident of Pickens County.

Pallbearers will be Powell Shirley, Howard Shirley, Terry Billings, Chuck Plowman, Cole Shirley, David Shirley and Mike Shirley.

Honorary pallbearers are Billings Processing Plant, Friends and Families of Kirk and Flatwoods Community, Former Employees of S. D. Allen, Employees of Bryce Hospital, Double D. Electric and Z. F. Industries.

Charles Sherer

SYLACAUGA - Charles Sherer, age unavailable, 320 N. Elm Ave., died July 29, 2001 at DCH Regional Medical Center. Complete local arrangements will be made later by the funeral home. Heritage Chapel Funeral Home is directing.

Rev. Joseph Patton

TUSCALOOSA - Rev. Joseph Patton, age unavailable, died July 29, 2001 at his residence. Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced at a later date by the funeral home. Wills' Funeral Service is directing.

Richard E. Nix, Sr.

COLUMBUS, Miss. - Richard E. Nix, Sr., 67, 2321 5th Ave. N., died July 28, 2001 in Columbus, Miss. Graveside services will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m., in

Tuscaloosa Memorial Park with Masonic graveside rites to be performed by Von Brayer Lodge #699. Visitation is Tuesday from 12-2 p.m. at the funeral home. Memory Chapel Funeral Home is directing.

Survivors include his wife, Patricia Johnson Nix; daughter, Joy Nix Ryan; son, Richard E. Nix, Jr.; sister, Betty Nix Bishop; brother, Gerald A. Nix; parents, Sebron E. Nix and Melba Holland Nix; 12 grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Masons will serve as pallbearers.

Honorary pallbearers are Paul Barton, CL Nix, Joe Morrow, Robert Bishop, Harvey Hux, Chuck Bishop, Rick Bishop and members of Green Oaks Golf Club.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to American Cancer Society.

Georgia L. Goodwin

TUSCALOOSA - Georgia L. Goodwin, 76 of 3510 3rd Ave. E., died July 26, 2001 at her home. Funeral Services will be held Tuesday, July 31, 2001 at 11 a.m., from the Solid Rock Primitive Church. Elder Frank Eatman, Jr., will officiate. Burial will follow in Cedar Oak Memorial Park with Rollins' Mortuary directing. She will lie in state at the church one hour prior to funeral time.

Herman Spencer

EUTAW - Herman Spencer, 50, Rt. 1 Box 149, died July 28, 2001 in Mantua. Services will be held at White Oakgrove on Wednesday, August 1, 2001 at 1 p.m. Burial will follow in #16 Section, Mantua. Druid Funeral Home is directing.

Herman Spencer was the son of Mrs. Georgia Reed and the late Henry C. Spencer. He leaves to morn one son, Michael Spencer, two grandchildren, two sisters, Virginia Wells and Doretha William, two brothers, Emanuel Reed II, and Lacell Reed, three uncles, Leroy Jones, Rev. Herbert Spencer, and Judge Spencer, one aunt Minnie Harris and a host of other relatives.

Martha A. Smith

DUNCANVILLE - Martha A. Smith, 52, 10967 Indian Creek Rd., died July 28, 2001 at DCH Regional Medical Center. Services will be held at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, Taylorville, on Wednesday, August 1, at 1 p.m. Burial will follow in Cedar Oak Memorial Park. Visitation is tonight from noon until 7 p.m. and placed in church one hour prior to funeral time. Williams Service Funeral Home is directing.

Clemy Hartley Avery Smelley

TUSCALOOSA - Clemy Hartley Avery Smelley, passed away on Monday, July 30, 2001 at her residence of 1745 Jack Warner Parkway, Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Funeral services will be Wednesday, August 1, 2001, at 12:30 p.m. at Memory Chapel Funeral Home, with burial at Memory Hill Gardens. Randy Fuller, Jim Davis and Dennis Avery will conduct the services with, Kenny Williamson, Kelly Williamson, Larry Noland, Charles Renfroe, Jeff Hartley, David Moore, Dan Moore and Hulon Stone serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers are Dr. Debra Davis and staff, Dr. J. Mantle and staff, N.A.R.F.E., A.A.R.P., Members of New Beginning Worship, Police Chief Ken Swindle and Hospice Staff.

She was preceded in death by her husband and father of her children, Richard C. Avery; parents, Jeff and Jenny Hartley; sisters, Clytee Miller, Cleny H. Renfroe (beloved twin); brother, Clayton Hartley. Survivors include her husband, John Smelley; brother, C. J. Hartley (Mary); sisters, Claudine Avery, Cleo Stone (Ford), Clara Moore; daughters, Norma A. Rogers, Shirley A. Fuller, Eva A. Williamson (Bill). Grandchildren, Deborah Rambo (Dennis), Rhonda Lancaster (Tim), Randy Fuller (Beth), Tara Davis (Jim), Angie Morrison (Joe), Bo Fuller, Kelly Williamson (Stephanie), Kenny Williamson. Great grandchildren, Larry Noland, Katelin Wilkins, Laura Wilkins, Jennifer Haywood (deceased), Destin Lancaster, Jesse Fuller, Annabeth Fuller, John Major Davis, Bo Hartley Davis, Emily Morrison, Will Morrison, Fuller Morrison, Brooke Williamson. Great great-grandchild, Mason Adams Haywood. Special loving nephew, Charles H. Renfroe (Patty) Chuck, Scott, Christa, Jedd and families.

Mrs. Smelley was retired from the VA Hospital and was a faithful member of New Beginning Family Worship Center where she was known to everyone as "Meme". We feel the Word of the Lord of Proverbs 30:28-31 are an appropriate eulogy: "Her children rise up and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her. 'Many daughters have done well, but you excel them all'. Charm is deceitful and beauty is passing, but a woman who fears the Lord, she shall be praised. Give her the fruit of her hands, and let her own works praise her in the gates."

In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to New Beginning Family Worship Center Building Fund, P.O. Box 215, Coker, Ala 35452 or to Hospice of West Alabama.
