Nellie O. New
Nellie O. New, age 79, of Jacksonville died April 1, 2003.
She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Jacksonville; Real
Estate officer for the Civil Engineers at the LRAFB; Retired from Civil
Service in 1983 and a longtime volunteer for the Rebsamen Auxiliary.
She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Thomas W. New Jr.; one son,
Thomas W. New III of San Antonio, Texas; one daughter, Jane New Foster of
Woodbridge, Va.; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were Friday, April 4, at the First Presbyterian Church,
Jacksonville with burial in Chapel Hill Memorial Park. Arrangements under the
direction of Moore's Jacksonville Funeral Home.
Joseph W. Elder Sr.
Joseph Wesley Elder Sr., 71, died Sunday, March 30, 2003.
He was a retired sign painter and a veteran of the Korean War.
Survivors include his wife, Marian Rose Elder; daughter, Jerry Sundermeier of
Jacksonville; two sons, Joseph W. Elder Jr. of North Little Rock, and John W.
Elder of Euless, Texas; sister, Florence Elder Smith of Little Rock; four
grandchildren; one great-granddaughter.
Lavaughn Westerfield
Lavaughn Earnest Westerfield, 72, of Jacksonville, died Thursday, April 3,
2003.
He was in the National Guard for two years before enlisting in the U.S. Air
Force in 1951. He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict and Vietnam War and
retired in 1971 after 20 years of service with the rank of Master Sergeant.
After the Air Force he went to work for the U.S. Postal Office in 1971 and
retired in 1992. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in
Jacksonville, a volunteer for the Jacksonville Care Channel and the meals on
wheels program.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Willa Westerfield of Jacksonville; three
children, Vanessa Nation of Jacksonville, Donna Pedersen of Cabot and Lt.
Colonel Philip Westerfield of Colorado Springs, Colo.; six grandchildren; one
brother, Roy Daniel Westerfield of Batesville.
Funeral services were April 8, at Moore's Jacksonville Funeral Home Chapel,
followed by interment in Chapel Hill Memorial Park.

David Edward Moore
David Edward Moore, 64, of Jacksonville died Tuesday, April 1, 2003.
He served in the U.S. Army for 12 years and was a veteran of the Vietnam
War. After serving in the military, he went to work for the Veterans
Administration from which he retired.
He is survived by his wife, Lota; brother, Larry Moore of Fairfield, Ill.; sister,
Crosa Taylor of Holiday, Fla.; and one grandson.

Rudolph V. Person
Rudolph V. Person, formerly of Little Rock, died Monday in St. Louis, Mo.
He was a guidance counselor and youth coach of many sports activities in the
St. Louis Public School. He was a graduate of Scipio A. Jones High School
and Arkansas Baptist College.
He is survived by wife, Marilyn Person, St. Louis; sons, Robert of Clearwater,
Fla., and Michael of St. Louis, Rudolph of North Little Rock, Derrick and
Kevin Person, both of Little Rock; daughters, Sharon Thompson, Jacksonville,
and Gina Rose Scott, Little Rock; his mother, Juanita Person, Little Rock;
brothers, Gerald of Cerritos, Calif., and Gary Person of Beavercreek, Ohio;
sisters, Shirley James of Dunnellon, Fla., and Marva Benjamin, of Washington,
D.C.; and several grandchildren.

Freddie D. Goodnight
Freddie D. Goodnight, 56, of North Little Rock, died April 14, 2003. He worked for Max Scoter Transmission for 35 years and Reiley Nursing Home for seven years.
He is survived by his mother, Maxine Goodnight of North Little Rock; daughter, Kristal Goodnight of North Little Rock;
stepdaughter, Denise Crow of Jacksonville; stepson, Troy Crow of Cato; sister, Linda Ballentine of Cabot; two grandchildren; three step-grandchildren.

June Tucker-O Shields
June Tucker-O Shields, 83, diedApril 13, 2003.
She had lived in the Jacksonville-North Little Rock area since 1956. She was a life member of The Methodist Church, past president of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of disabled veterans, a life member of the American Legion, The M.O.C.A Auxiliary Chaplain, also of the American Legion
M.O.C.A. and State Chaplain of M.O.C.A., an affiliate of VFW, and was up for grand chaplain. She was a member of the New Prospect Baptist Church in Colt, and owned a couple of restaurants in Marianna. She was known as "Little Cookie Lady" in the Jacksonville area. She received recognition for her volunteer services including the Governor's Volunteer Excellence Award signed by Bill Clinton, the KSSN volunteer of the week award and the United Way Volunteer Award. She was a past Sunday School teacher and Intermediate Training Union leader at the First Baptist Church at Marianna.
She is survived by daughters, Doris Walls of Hot Springs Village, and Carol Ward of Colt; one son, David Trifon of Houston, Texas; 11 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, 4 great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were Wednesday at Rest Hills Chapel with a graveside service at Marianna.

Alfred Williams Jr., a native of Little Rock, died Monday, April 7, 2003, in Hawaiian Gardens, Calif.
He joined the U.S. Navy in 1954, retiring after 25 years of service. He was employed as senior welder with the Bellflower United School District.

Hubert Quinton Chapman, 79, of Newark died April 9, 2003.
He was retired from the American Lantern Corporation in Newport and a member of the First Baptist Church in Newark. He was a member of the Newark Masonic Lodge #248, the Scottish Rite and the Emma B. Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star.
He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Willene Chapman of Newark; a son, Hubert Chapman Jr. of Jacksonville; a sister, Mary Chapman Bennett of Newark; and a grandchild.

He retired from the United States Air Force as a MSgt.

He was a retired veteran of the United States Navy. He served his country in World War II and Korea. He was a member of the Submarine Veterans of World War II; a member of the Masonic Lodge #750 and was a retired Foreman for the city of Jacksonville Parks and Recreation.

George Cecil Reaves
George Cecil Reaves, age 78, of Jacksonville died Thursday, May 1, 2003.
He retired from the U.S. Navy in March 1968, from Remington in 1993 and was of the Assembly of God faith.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Reaves; three children, Cliford Reaves, David Reaves, and Lee Ella Denkias; three brothers; four sisters; 10 grandchildren ; and eight great- grandchildren.

Geraldine J. Fewell
Geraldine Johnson Fewell, age 83, died Monday, May 26, 2003.
She was born in Lonoke. During World War II, she worked in Jacksonville making munitions for the war effort. She worked at Arkansas Baptist Hospital from 1956 to 1965 and was honored as the hospital's Employee of the Year in 1960. She later served as a volunteer at Memorial Hospital, where she was honored for her service.
She is survived by her son, Gary Johnson; two grandchildren; and a brother, Rev. Rodney Shaw of Washington, D.C. She was a member of Gardner Memorial United Methodist Church in North Little Rock.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Roller-Owens Chapel. Interment will follow at Edgewood Memorial Park.
Ralph H. Herman
Col. (Ret.) Ralph H. Herman, formerly of North Little Rock, died May 23 at the age of 78.
He was a member of the Army Air Corps Cadet Class of 43-K. He retired in 1973 after 30 years service in the Air Force.
He is survived by his former wife, Margie Herman; two sons, David Herman of Fayetteville and Chuck Herman of Atlanta; and his daughter, Mary Shepard of Walnut Creek, Calif.; two sisters, Geri Swanner of Dallas and Pauline Payne of Jacksonville; nine grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.
