Mr. Charles H. Franklin
Mr. Charles H. Franklin, 57, of Hamburg died Friday, February 25, 2000, at his residence. He was a native of Amity and a resident of Hamburg since 1966. He received his bachelor's degree from the Arkansas State University in Jonesboro and his master's degree from the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Hamburg and taught vocational agriculture at Hamburg High School for 34 years until retiring in January. He was a member of the American Agriculture Teachers Association, past president and vice president of the Arkansas Agriculture Teachers Association and a recipient of the Arkansas Vocational Agriculture Teacher of the Year award. He was a member and sponsor of the Future Farmers of America since 1956. He was the founding sponsor for the Project Pals mentoring program in Arkansas. He was the recipient of the Hamburg Area Chamber of Commerce Man of the Year award for 1999. He was the bus driver, trainer and statistician for the Hamburg Athletic Department for most of his career in Hamburg as well as a hunter safety instructor for many years. Mr. Franklin was instrumental in starting the Dixie Baseball Program in Hamburg, and he was a member of the Hamburg Baseball Commission and the Hamburg Parks and Recreation Commission. He was a district commissioner for the Dixie Youth Baseball, and he was instrumental in starting the girls softball program in Hamburg where there is a girls softball field named in his honor.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Albert & Jessie Chancellor Franklin; three brothers, Joe, Roland & Jimmy Franklin; and a sister, Nancy Caldonia Franklin. He is survived by his wife, Mary Alice Pendergrass Franklin; a son, Ted Lee Franklin and his wife, Alicia; a daughter, Kathy Ann Franklin and her friend, Tuan Anh Tran and a granddaughter, Rhiannon Franklin, all of Hamburg; a brother, Lloyd Franklin of Houston, TX; four sisters, Alice Price of Mt. Ida, and Louise Franklin, Brinda Franklin and Linda Watts all of Roseboro and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services were at 2 p.m., Saturday, February 26, at the First Baptist Church in Hamburg with Dr. Bobby Pennington and Rev. Klois Hargis officiating. Pallbearers were Richie Emory, Jack McDonald, Marty Martin, Bob Davis, Johnny McMurry, Tommy Hollis, Todd Callaway and Teddy Hickman. Honorary pallbearers were Max Dyson, Shawn Higginbotham, Wardell Washington and the Hamburg High School coaching staff. Interment followed services at the Hamburg Cemetery under the direction of Jones Funeral Home of Hamburg. Memorials may be made to the Charles H. Franklin Scholarship, Hamburg High School Scholarship Fund, c/o Mrs. Dot Higginbotham, 518 S. Main, Hamburg, AR 71646.
Marilyn Hiatt Hudgens
Marilyn Hiatt Hudgens, 73, of Crossett died Wednesday, February 23, 2000, at the Arkansas Heart Hospital in Little Rock. Born January 19, 1927, in Gillham to Toney and Pearl Goodwin Hiatt, she was a former business owner, office manager and bookkeeper for many years in Crossett. She was treasurer for the City of Crossett in the early 1970s. Also, she was a member, elder and deacon of the Presbyterian Church of Crossett where she served as choir director and organist for 45 years. She taught private music lessons locally for many years. Mrs. Hudgens organized the Crossett chapter of the League of Women Voters, was president of the state organization and treasurer of the national organization. She helped organize the first genealogical society in Crossett and the first community chorus and was a founding member of the Crossett Players where she directed and was associated with many plays and musicals.
Survivors are her husband, Robert H. Hudgens of Crossett; a son, Randy Hudgens of College Station, TX; two daughters, Leslie Hill of Crossett and Susan Mullins of San Antonio, TX; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Funeral services were at 1 p.m. Saturday, February 26, in the Presbyterian Church of Crossett with Dr. George Wortham and Robin Allen officiating. Pallbearers were Scott, Bob and Bain Young, Andy Hill, Mike Mott and Mike McDaniels. Burial followed services at Pinewood Memorial Park, directed by Jones Funeral Home of Crossett.
Vonnie Laverne Maxwell
Vonnie Laverne "Honey" Maxwell of Monticello was born April 25, 1925, in Drew County. She died Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2000, at Drew Memorial Hospital at the age of 74 years. She was a retired secretary-bookkeeper for the University of Arkansas-Monticello, a member of Eastern Star and a member of First Baptist Church of Monticello. She was the daughter of the late C.I. Burchfield and Lula Stone Burchfield.
Survivors include her husband, Louis Maxwell of Monticello; two daughters, Margaret Edney of Crossett and Betty Lou McFarland of Searcy; one sister, Inez Harriman of Oxford, MS; three grandsons and three great grandchildren.
Funeral service were at 3:30 p.m. Friday at Stephenson-Dearman Funeral Home chapel. Burial followed services at the Oakland Cemetery.
Mr. Credell Polite
Mr. Credell Polite, 94, of Portland died Friday, February 25, 2000, at the Beverly Healthcare of Hamburg. Mr. Polite was a lifelong resident of Portland, a retired farmer and a member of the Portland #2 Baptist Church. He was proceeded in death by his parents, Willie and Hedia Polite, three brothers and eight sisters.
He is survived by his wife, Hattie Mae Polite of Hamburg; and a nephew, Junior Simpson of Crossett.
Funeral services will be Thursday, March 2, at 2 p.m. in the Portland #2 Baptist Church with the Rev. Albert Fenceroy officiating. Interment was in the Portland #2 Cemetery, directed by Cromwell Funeral Home of Hamburg.
