Calvin Purvis
Calvin Purvis, an Ashley County resident for the past 20 years, died Sunday, June 18, 2000, at the Veterans Hospital in Little Rock. Born in Prentiss, MS, to Edgar Middleton Purvis and Mary Flora Pauline Ball, he was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He served two tours in the Vietnam War and one tour in Italy before retiring from the U. S. Navy after 20 years of service. He and his family then moved to Ashley County. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Joseph Doyle of Eudora and Edgar Owen of Jacksonville, FL; and a sister, Lillian Chestenia "Judy" Bailey of Memphis, TN.
Survivors include his wife, Nadine Purvis of Crossett; a son, Glenn Purvis of Crossett; a brother, Otis B. Purvis of Houma, LA; a sister, Carolyn Farrow of Summit, Utah; and three granddaughters.
Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 21, in the Jones Funeral Home chapel in Crossett.
Burial followed services at Pinewood Memorial Park, directed by Jones Funeral Home of Crossett.

Leroy Travis
Leroy Travis, 77, of Bastrop, LA, who was born at Rawls, died June Friday, 23, 2000, at the Morehouse General Hospital in Bastrop. He was a retired equipment operator for Texas Gas, a member and deacon emeritus of the Bethel Baptist Church and a veteran of World War II. He was preceded in death by his wife, Myra Travis.
Survivors include two sons, Mike Travis and wife Paula of Mobile, AL, and Steve Travis and wife Rita of Bastrop; four grandchildren, Scott and Karen Travis Diel and Kevin and Christopher Travis; two great-grandchildren, Tatum Michelle Diel and Whitney Leanne Diel; and a nephew, Tom Travis and wife Cheryl of Dallas, TX.
Funeral services were set for 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 27, in the Bethel Baptist Church with Rev. Carlos Trapp officiating. Pallbearers were to be Floyd Lott, Ronald Hopkins, Charles Coody, Sam Little, Gary Stevenson and Craig Oliphant. Honorary pallbearers were the deacons of the church.
Burial followed services at the Causey Cemetery, directed by Golden Funeral Home of Bastrop.

Janice Belinda Allen
Janice Belinda Allen, 47, of Crossett died Thursday, June 15, 2000, at her home. A life-long resident of Crossett, she was a homemaker and a member of the New Bethel Missionary Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents, Jessie and Gradie Wine Allen; a brother, Robert Allen; and a sister, Mary Ann Allen.
Survivors include two sons, Mario Davis and SanJuan Davis; a daughter, Quintishia Davis, all of Crossett; four brothers, James Allen of Monroe, LA, Johnny Allen of Little Rock and Melvin and Mavis Simmons of Crossett; and two sisters, Geraldine Simmons of North Little Rock and Mary Cavaness of Wilmar.
Funeral services were planned for 2 p..m on Tuesday, June 20, in the New Bethel Missionary Baptist Church with Rev. B. J. Jackson officiating. Pallbearers were to be Larry Rogers, William Rogers, Terry Keys, Billie Allen, Harold McDade and Jimmy Tate. Burial was to follow services at the Westview Cemetery, directed by Cromwell Funeral Home of Hamburg.

Mr. Clifford E. Corder
Mr. Clifford E. Corder, 92, of Portland, died Wednesday, June 14, 2000, at the Medical Center of South Arkansas in El Dorado. Mr. Corder was a native of Ashley County; a resident of Portland since 1946 and a resident of the Hillsboro Manor Nursing Home in El Dorado for the past two years. He was a member of the Portland Baptist Church where he served as a deacon. He worked for the J.W. Pugh Company in Portland for many years and after his retirement he worked for and retired from the Ashley County Road Department. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Dell Corder Tucker in January, two infant sons and his parents, Simpson and Gertrude Pamplin Corder.
He is survived by his wife, Carrie Woods Corder of El Dorado; a son, Charles W. Corder of Blanchard, LA; a daughter, Sue Russell of El Dorado; two brothers, Jim Corder of Snyder and John Corder of Hollandale, MS; four grandchildren, Kim Pounds of Hamburg, Toby Russell of El Dorado, Lisa Hay and Chuck Corder both of Blanchard, LA and five great-grandsons.
Funeral services were at 2 p.m., Friday, June 16, in the Portland Baptist Church with Bro. Jerry Selby officiating. Pallbearers were Benton Newcome, Dennis Holland, Phil & Ted Selby, Edward & Johnny Golden, Stanton Veazey and Lamar Woods. Honorary pallbearers were members of the Portland Baptist Church Men's Sunday School Class. Burial followed services at the Snyder Cemetery under the direction of Jones Funeral Home of Hamburg. Memorials may be made to the Portland Baptist Church, PO Box 86, Portland, AR 71663.
